Temperatures could nudge 45 to 47
degrees Celsius in large swathes of north and north-west India for the rest of
the week, the weather office has forecast, before conditions ease slightly with
the onset of monsoon down south. The India Meteorological Department (IMD)
issued “heat wave to severe heat wave” warnings for parts of Uttar Pradesh,
Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi, which are already baking
in early-summer heat this year. Maximum temperatures could touch 45-47 degrees
in a severe heat wave condition. “These conditions are likely to spread, during May 17-21. They are likely to abate gradually during the remaining part
of May,” the IMD said late Monday. There is no
official statistics of aggregated heat-related deaths, but searing temperatures
coupled with a drought is said to have killed some 300 people this year, and
left not enough food to eat or water to drink in parts of an area that holds
about 25% of India’s 1.2 billion people.

Maximum temperature recorded in Ahmedabad on Tuesday 17 May, was 46.9 degrees Celsius, which was the highest in the last six years. At 47.6 degrees Celsius, Idar in Sabarkantha district recorded the maximum temperature in the state, while in Gandhinagar it was 47 degrees Celsius, the IMD data said. Mr Sarkar said the severe heat wave condition has been caused due to the movement of north westerly wave. "We have issued a red alert, which will continue till tomorrow. We can get some respite from May 21 because of westerly movement of wind, which is expected to bring moisture that will reduce temperature.

A
new Solar Cell has been developed by scientists with efficiency of 34.5% claiming
a new world record for unfocussed Sun light and nudging closer to the
theoretical limit. In Australia using a 28 square centimetre four junction
mini-module, embedded in a prism that extracts the maximum energy from sunlight
was captured. Splitting the incoming wave into four bands and using a hybrid four-junction
receiver to squeeze even more electricity from each beam of sunlight. Confirmed
by US, NREL that it is 44% better than the previous
record made by Alta Devices which
reached 24% efficiency over a larger surface area of 800 square cm. UNSW team gave a new technique in 2014, known
as CPV (concentrator photovoltaics)- and by splitting out various wave lengths.

SUN, MARS AND EARTH
On Sunday, May 22, 2016, the sun and Mars will
be on exact opposite sides of Earth. On Sunday morning, Mars, Earth and the sun will line up
perfectly in the sky. This once-every-two-years event is called Mars
opposition. That's because Mars and the sun will be on opposite sides of Earth. On May 9, Mercury passed directly between
Earth and the sun, resembling a black dot against our vast, bright star. Telescopes
or high-powered binoculars were needed to see that Mercury transit, which
occurs just 13 times or so a century. Nothing fancy is needed to gaze upon Mars,
just your eyes. Sky-watchers, gazing to the southeast at nightfall, can enjoy a
brighter, seemingly bigger Mars well into June. A full moon, on May 21, will
add to the viewing pleasure. The Hubble Space Telescope already is zooming in
for pictures. On Thursday, 19 May 2016, the Space Telescope Science Institute
in Baltimore released a snapshot of Mars taken May 12 from 50 million miles
out. The stunning image shows details as small as 20 to 30 miles across.

Today
there was sunlight at 2.30PM in the afternoon at Visakhapatnam, 20 May 2016
with cyclone weather faded away. Tropical
Cyclone Roanu may not become an intense Bay of Bengal cyclone, but it may
instead trigger dangerous flooding in parts of eastern India, Bangladesh, and
Myanmar into the weekend. Moist southerly winds ahead of the center of Roanu
will also steer clusters of thunderstorms with heavy rain ashore in these same
areas. This poses a dangerous threat of flooding and landslides, particularly
in the higher terrain of the eastern India states, far north and western
Myanmar even perhaps into extreme south-central China into next week. Thanks to wind shear, the change in
wind speed and/or direction with height,
Roanu is not expected to strengthen
much over the next few days as it tracks generally North-East toward the coast
of Bangladesh or northwest Myanmar sometime this weekend.

TRANSPARENT WOOD
Scientists create transparent wood
natural, beautiful, warm to the touch, strong and stiff and its renewable.
Liangbing Hu of the University of Maryland declared how transparent it could
go. It is stronger than glass and is a better insulator. Two step process
involves first they boiled wood for about two hours, in a mix of water and
chemicals, including sodium hydroxide, which eliminates lignin and gives wood
its colour, they then poured epoxy over the boiled wood, making it four to five
times stronger. Journal of Advanced Materials, and with waveguide effect with
wood, more light enters into the house claims the researcher Hu.
