Dec. 16, 2020: What is particularly exciting for the scientists at JAXA is that the sample collection attempts managed to snag not only dusty material but also larger chunks. These pebbles and small rock debris could provide even more information about the formation and life of the asteroid, as well as other rocky bodies in our solar system. The agency owes this to the fact that the spacecraft performed two sample collection maneuvers and it appears as though the compartment used during the first touchdown has even more material than the scientists thought. This is the first time a gas sample has been collected from deep space.
Dec. 16, 2020: Lakes in India:The largest freshwater lake located in the North-Eastern part of India is the Loktak Lake. It is known for the Phumdis, which is a series of islands exclusive to this lake in Moirang, Manipur. Further, the area of this beautiful lake is 287 km and length 35 km. / The Changu lake is situated at a distance of 40 kilometers from Gangtok, the capital city of the state. And is elevated to a height of 3,753 m (12,313ft). / This is another glacial lake that is located at an altitude of 4,135 meters, about 14200 feet above sea level. Vasuki Tal or lake is situated in the holy state of Uttrakhand and is considered to be scared, not only that, this lake offers a magnificently enthralling view of the neighbouring Chaukhamba peaks and is a paradise for trekkers. / Gavi is a charming hamlet located in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala. And in this small village is a beautiful lake that also goes by the same name. / Kareri Lake is located in the southern region of the Dhauladhar range, North West of Dharamshala in the Kangra district of the beautiful state of Himachal Pradesh. It is a shallow, freshwater lake that is situated 2934 meters above sea level. There is a temple(temples that worship a menstruating goddess) dedicated to Lord Shiva and Shakti on a hilltop.
Dec. 16, 2020: It turns out, our solar system also has a network of routes that would allow spacecraft and probes to travel much faster than they otherwise would. These are linked to the gravitational forces at work and are known as œcelestial autobahn or œcelestial highway. Researchers say that these routes could be used by spacecraft to travel the far reaches of the planetary system faster than otherwise which means they’ll take less time, and also to monitor and understand how near-Earth objects may collide with the planet. This study comes as part of a paper published in an issue of Sciences Advances.

Fig.1. Time Reversed Optical Wave.
Physicists Create Time-Reversed Optical Waves For The First Time. Interference can make a once simple wave complex as it spreads. Time reversal involves collecting all that complexity and inverting it to recreate the wave's original form. It's already common with water and sound waves, and even in relatively low-frequency electromagnetic waves. Mounaiz and Carpenter announce they have succeeded, passing pulses of wavelengths around 1,551.4 nanometers in the infrared, through optical fibers that split the pulses along many optical paths to create a complex output that was collected and time reversed.

"Most of the seismicity is concentrated at the beginning of the sequence, mainly during the month of September, with more than a thousand earthquakes a day," the center said. The shakes have become so frequent that the strait itself, once increasing in width at a rate of about 7 or 8 mm (0.30 inch) a year is now expanding 15 cm (6 inches) a year, the center said. "It's a 20-fold increase ... which suggests that right this minute ... the Shetland Islands are separating more quickly from the Antarctic peninsula,

India's workhorse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C50) successfully launched the country's 42nd communication satellite, CMS-01, into its intended orbit this afternoon. PSLV-C50 lifted off from the Second Launch Pad (SLP) at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, on the eastern coast of the country, at 1541 hours today with CMS-01 as its sole passenger. After a flight of about 20 minutes 12 seconds, the vehicle injected the satellite into its intended orbit as planned, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said. After injection, the solar panels of CMS-01 were automatically deployed and ISRO’s Master Control Facility at Hassan assumed the control of the satellite. In the coming days, orbit raising manoeuvers will be executed to position the satellite in the Geostationary Orbit at its designated location, an ISRO press release said.

Dec. 18, 2020: The incredible, variable bacteria living in your mouth. Researchers take a closer look at the genomes of microbial communities in the human mouth. Researchers have examined the human oral microbiome and discovered tremendous variability in bacterial subpopulations living in certain areas of the mouth. In many cases, the team was able to identify a handful of genes that might explain a particular bacterial group's habitat specificity. For instance, the microbes found on the tongue are very different from the microbes found on the plaque on teeth. "Your tongue microbes are more similar to those living on someone else's tongue than they are to those living in your throat or on your gums!" said Eren.

Fig.2 Cobalt disulfide Topological properties.
New topological properties found in "old" material of Cobalt disulfide. Schoop Lab discovered the presence of Weyl nodes in bulk CoS2 that allow them to make predictions about its surface properties. The material hosts Weyl-fermions and Fermi-arc surface states within its band structure, which may enable it to serve as a platform for exotic phenomena and places it among materials candidates for use in spintronic devices. The research also settles a long-standing debate, proving that CoS2 is not a true half-metal. A half-metal is any substance that acts as a conductor to electrons of one spin orientation but as an insulator or semiconductor to those of the opposite orientation.Researchers found that bulk CoS2 contains objects called Weyl nodes within its structure that serve as electronic channels that can predict other states at the surface."These electronic states that only exist at the surface have chirality associated with them, and because of that chirality the electrons can also only move in certain directions. Chirality refers to that property that makes an object or system indistinguishable from its mirror image—i.e. not superimposable—and is an important property in many branches of science. Schoop added that the electronic channels are polarized. This magnetism could potentially be used to manipulate the material: scientists can switch the magnetization direction and surface states could then be reconfigured as a response to this applied magnetic field.

Fig.4 Lightning over Volcano in Japan on Thursday.
A Reuters photographer captured a stunning photo of lightning striking Japan's Mount Sakurajima volcano on Thursday. Located in southern Kyushu, Sakurajima is one of the world's most active volcanoes, spewing ash and lava every four to 24 hours. The photo shows bolts of lightning colliding with the mouth of the volcano. The Sakurajima volcano range is one of the world’s most active volcano sites. Especially combined with the lightning storm, the eruptions are considered to be one of the most powerful clashes in nature. When lightning appears to be striking down onto the volcano or even on its mouth, it is known as volcanic lightning. Though many have studied this phenomenon for years, there is a lot still to be explored about what causes this spectacular phenomenon or why. The reason for a lack of study is quite obvious; it’s really dangerous to be around a live, active volcano especially during an eruption.

Fig.11 Spitzer Infra Red Telescope discoveries.
Spitzer also detected infrared radiation from sources so far away that in effect it looked almost 13 billion years back in time to when the universe was less than 1 billion years old. Spitzer showed that even in that early epoch some galaxies had already grown to the size of present-day galaxies and that they must have formed within a few hundred million years of the big bang that gave birth to the universe some 13.7 billion years ago. Because Spitzer was sensitive to infrared radiation emitted from dust, it also discovered Saturn’s outermost ring, which extends from 7.3 to 11.8 million km (4.6 to 7.4 million miles) from Saturn and is the largest planetary ring in the solar system. This dust ring arises from impacts on the moon Phoebe, and particles from this ring that spiral inward toward Saturn have caused the marked asymmetry in brightness between the two hemispheres of Iapetus.

Dec. 23, 2020: Source: Goethe University Frankfurt: Summary: For the first time, an international team of scientists has succeeded in filming quantum physical effects on a helium dimer as it breaks apart. The film shows the superposition of matter waves from two simultaneous events that occur with different probability: The survival and the disintegration of the helium dimer. This method might in future make it possible to track experimentally the formation and decay of quantum Efimov systems. However, if the gas is cooled down to just 10 degrees above absolute zero (minus 273 °C) and then pumped through a small nozzle into a vacuum chamber, which makes it even colder, then -- very rarely -- such helium dimers form. These are unrivaledly the weakest bound stable molecules in the Universe, and the two atoms in the molecule are correspondingly extremely far apart from each other. While a chemical compound of two atoms commonly measures about 1 angstrom (0.1 nanometres), helium dimers on average measure 50 times as much, i.e. 52 angstrom. That the researchers were able to observe and film the helium atom flying away as a wave at all in their laser experiment was due to the fact that the helium atom only flew away with a certain probability: With 98 per cent probability it was still bound to its second helium partner, with 2 per cent probability it flew away. These two helium atom waves -- Here it comes! Quantum physics! -- superimpose and their interference could be measured.

Dec. 25, 2020:This New Type of Glue Is Activated by Magnetic Fields, And Really Easy to Use. A newly developed glue that gets its stickiness from a magnetic field could lead to serious energy and cost savings for companies that need to stick things together on an industrial scale. To harden – or cure – the mix of chemicals in most epoxy-based glues, some kind of environmental effect like heat, light, or moisture needs to be applied. Here, that's being achieved by a "magnetocuring" process, which is being promoted as an option for when conventional adhesives aren't particularly effective, or in heat-sensitive applications, or for when a lot of insulating material is involved (making it tricky to apply heat, light, or moisture). The glue works by combining a commercial epoxy with custom-made magnetic nanoparticles that mix manganese, zinc, and iron: these nanoparticles heat up when electromagnetic energy is passed through them, fastening the materials in place. "Our key development is a way to cure adhesives within minutes of exposure to a magnetic field, while preventing overheating of the surfaces to which they are applied," says materials scientist Terry Steele from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore.

Dec. 26, 2020: The origin of the Mysore Sandal Soap can be traced to World War 1. In 1916, the war blocked the export of sandalwood from Mysore to major Western countries. The Maharaja of Mysore, Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar, chanced upon unused sandalwood reserves and ordered the extraction of oil from the aromatic wood. Two years later, after the king received a rare set of sandalwood soap from a foreigner, he asked Dewan Sir M. Visvesvaraya, to map out a plan of action to begin the production of such soaps in Mysore. They sent Sosale Garalapuri Sastry, now popular as ‘Soap Sastry’, one of India’s first industrial chemists at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, to England to master the art of soap making.
Dec. 27, 2020: Varanasi farmers learn to use drones for seed plantation, the drones were used in the fields of the `rice-wheat cropping system`, where tractors could not be used for tilling due to wet soil. This cropping system is the main feature of the Indo-Gangetic plains. He said both rice and wheat have different soil requirements. If rice needs stagnant water conditions, wheat requires well-pulverised soil balanced with moisture, air and thermal regime. Due to this a key feature of the `rice-wheat cropping system` is the annual conversion of soil from aerobic to anaerobic and then back to aerobic conditions.

December 29, 2020: New Views of Quantum Jumps Challenge Core Tenets of Physics. One of the most basic processes in all of nature—a subatomic particle’s transition between discrete energy states—is surprisingly complex and sometimes predictable, recent work shows. Everyday experience, of course, tells us this is not the case, but for the less accessible microscopic realm, the true nature of such “quantum jumps” has been a major unsolved problem in physics. In recent decades, however, technological advancements have allowed physicists to probe the issue more closely in carefully arranged laboratory settings. The most fundamental breakthrough arguably came in 1986, when researchers for the first time experimentally verified that quantum jumps are actual physical events that can be observed and studied. Ever since, steady technical progress has opened deeper vistas upon the mysterious phenomenon. The system transitions by passing through a mixture of the excited state and ground state, a quantum phenomenon known as superposition. But sometimes, when the connection exceeds a certain threshold, this superposition will shift toward a specific value of the mixture and tend to stay at that state until it moves to the ground unannounced. In that special case, “this probabilistic quantum jump cannot be predicted and reversed midflight,” explains Parveen Kumar.

9.4.2020 12:56 AM: PHYSICISTS DISCOVER "ANTI-GRAVITY" IN BIZARRE BUOYANCY EXPERIMENT. But, while this discovery may be ancient, a team of French physicists has now discovered a new kind of buoyancy that they call "anti-gravity." In both theoretical and experimental trials, the researchers found that objects, such as small toy boats, could float on the opposite side of levitated fluids instead of falling down due to gravity. IS PHYSICS BROKEN? — The researchers were able to validate their results with theoretical calculations as well, meaning that this event was not simply a fluke but instead a fundamental characteristic of how vibrations affect dense liquids. The researchers are excited about what other bizarre states like this might exist in the fields of chemistry or biology, they say in the paper. Discovering what anti-gravity could mean in these fields offers great potential for future research, write the authors.

Dec. 09, 2029: Ancient tools and DNA discovered in a Tibetan cave shed unprecedented light on humans' most enigmatic ancestor, the Denisovans. The findings show that Denisovans adapted to living in a high-altitude, low-oxygen environment about 120,000 years before modern humans in the region did. Modern-day Tibetans may have inherited some of those genetic adaptations. Last year, scientists unearthed a 160,000-year-old jawbone in the same cave. The new findings suggest the jawbone belonged to a Denisovan, too. Forty years ago, a Tibetan monk wandered into the holy Baishiya Karst Cave and stumbled across a jawbone.  Those genetic traits may help Sherpas weather high altitudes. Their bodies don't make that extra hemoglobin. Instead, their DNA contains a gene called EPAS1, which prevents that blood-thickening process. That gene comes from Denisovans.

This 7,000-year-old megalithic monument in Spain’s Extremadura region is particularly intriguing because it only recently reappeared, after being submerged for decades beneath a reservoir. Around 100 ancient stones, thought to have been used as a ceremonial tomb, are arranged in an oval shape. While the site was excavated in the 1920s, it was later flooded after a dam was built. The dolmen was revealed in summer 2019 after a period of drought. Carnac Stones, Brittany, France. The Carnac Stones or Carnac Alignments in northern France is the largest megalithic site ever found. Built by pre-Celtic inhabitants of Brittany between 5000 and 2000 BC, nearly 3,000 ancient menhirs stand in rows while other types of megaliths are arranged in clusters. The main group has 12 converging rows of standing stones, stretching over half a mile (1km) with the remains of a stone circle at either end. Shrouded in mystery, local legend refers to them as a stone army while historians believe the site was of great ceremonial and religious significance to its creators. Deer stones, Mongolia, Vast and ancient deer stone monuments are scattered across the central Asian steppe, built by Mongolian Bronze Age nomadic pastoralists along with ceremonial or burial mounds (khirigsuurs). The large and imposing stones, which often feature elaborate carvings of flying deer, can be arranged in groups or lone monoliths. Small circles of stone boulders have also been found around khirigsuur in the Altai Mountains, a fertile region for archaeologists studying Bronze Age hunters and herders.Stone Circles at Odry, Poland. Deep in a thick forest in central Poland, the Iron Age rings of Odry are a beautiful oddity. No one is certain exactly when or why they were built and they have long been shrouded in local legends and witchcraft, but four of the stone circles are connected to solstices. With at least 602 Neolithic burial sites and Europe’s second largest collection of circles, it's a significant site for historians studying the Wielbark culture in Pomerania, a historic region that covers parts of Poland and eastern Germany.Wassu Stone Circle, Gambia. Surprisingly little is known about the origins of the large groups of stone circles that are scattered around Senegal and the Gambia. The vast sacred landscape, created over more than 1,500 years, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Stone Circles of Senegambia. It encompasses four large groups of stone circles, including the 11 ancient stone circles of Wassu which are found around the Central River Region of Gambia. Constructed by an ancient African culture, Wassu has the tallest stones and some burial remains.Sine Ngayene, Senegal. Another awe-inspiring example of this west African megalithic tradition is Senegal’s Sine Ngayene. The extraordinary complex is the largest of the four groups in the UNESCO property. It has 52 circles of standing stones, including one that forms a double circle. You can also see the quarry from where the mighty monoliths were painstakingly extracted. The site also includes numerous burial mounds, suggesting they have a funerary function.Rujm el-Hiri, Golan Heights. A bird’s-eye view gives you the best sense of the scale and ambition of this ancient megalith monument that lies in the Israeli-occupied portion of the Golan Heights. Consisting of a large circle of basalt rocks and four smaller concentric circles, the site was only discovered in 1967 by Israeli archaeologists after the territory was captured from Syria. It’s been dated to 3000 BC but exactly who built it and why is unknown.Maryhill Stonehenge Memorial, Washington, USA. It might not be ancient but this full-scale replica of Stonehenge in Maryhill, Washington is an impressive site. Set just east of the Maryhill Museum of Art, it was built by the museum’s founder Sam Hill in 1918 to commemorate 14 servicemen of Klickitat County. It was the nation’s first First World War memorial and every year a remembrance ceremony is held on the anniversary of the death of each of the men. Hill’s ashes are in a crypt housed just below the memorial.
Dec. 12, 2020: Aerosols in Indo-Gangetic plain responsible for high rainfall in Himalayan foothills. Scientists have found that aerosols like black carbon and dust, which makes the Indo-Gangetic Plain one of the most polluted regions of the world, have led to increased incidents of high rainfall events in the foothills of the Himalayan Region.

December 12, 2020 10:30 PM: Physicists Prove Anyons Exist, a Third Type of Particle in the Universe. Physicists give us an early view of a third kingdom of quasiparticles that only arise in two dimensions. First predicted by theorists in the early 1980s, these particle-like objects only arise in realms confined to two dimensions, and then only under certain circumstances — like at temperatures near absolute zero and in the presence of a strong magnetic field. Anyons are different. If one moves around another, their collective quantum state shifts. It might require three or even five or more revolutions before the anyons return to their original state. This slight shift in the wave acts like a kind of memory of the trip. This property makes them appealing objects for quantum computers, which depend on quantum states that are notoriously fragile and prone to errors. Anyons suggest a more robust way to store data.

Scientists Find Spiders Forming Webs Inside Space Station, In Zero-Gravity Space. And now, in a research conducted on the International Space Station, researchers have discovered that they are able to make their webs regardless of the existence of gravity. However, in microgravity, they saw one of the spiders actually make symmetrical webs with hubs positioned closer to the centre now. We were very fortunate that the lamps were attached at the top of the chamber and not on various sides. Otherwise, we would not have been able to discover the effect of light on the symmetry of webs in zero gravity.”
Dec. 13, 2020: New material can store solar energy for months... and even years! The material that would allow such a momentous feat to become reality is called “metal-organic framework” or MOF. In this, carbon-based molecules form structures and link themselves to metal ions. MOFs are highly porous, which means that they attack and create composite material in collaboration with other small molecules. Scientists added the molecules of the compound - azobenzene, which is capable of absorbing light. On average, the composite material was able to store energy emanating from ultraviolet light for at least four months at room temperature. After this, it was able to release it again.
