Late News:Thursday 30 June 1994 Chandrashekar Joshi, A Lal and their colleagues from the department of electrical engineering at the University of California at Los Angeles claim that using the new technique in their laboratory, they have achieved particle acceleration that is 30 times higher than that achieved in conventional accelerators (Nature, Vol 368, No 6471). Robert Bingham of UK's Rutherford Appleton Laboratory says that though the "bench-top" accelerator developed by Joshi and his colleagues cannot compete with the present particle accelerators in terms of energy generated, their ability to accelerate particles to extremely high speeds would open up exciting new fields such as filming in slow motion hitherto unseen chemical reactions or biological processes.

VERNAL EQUINOX 2018: Today the length of night and day are nearly equal. The days will now become longer at the higher latitudes because it takes the sun longer to rise and set. Sunset on March 19 through sunrise March 20.The vernal equinox occurs as the sun passes over the equator from Earth's perspective and the Northern Hemisphere begins to tilt toward the sun, leading to longer days in the north and shorter days in the south. It marks the north first day of spring, snowy weather in some areas notwithstanding, and the beginning of fall for those in the Southern Hemisphere. While the day-to-day variations in weather are much more complex,  the vernal equinox is a sign that warmer days are on the way.

The players are two dwarf galaxies, the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Small Magellanic Cloud, both of which orbit our own Milky Way Galaxy. But as they go around the Milky Way, they are also orbiting each other. Each one tugs at the other, and one of them has pulled out a huge cloud of gas from its companion. Called the Leading Arm, this arching collection of gas connects the Magellanic Clouds to the Milky Way. Roughly half the size of our galaxy, this structure is thought to be about 1 or 2 billion years old. Its name comes from the fact that it's leading the motion of the Magellanic Clouds.
RESEARCHERS at Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar have produced one of thinnest materials ever known to humankind. Kabeer Jasuja, an assistant professor of Chemical Engineering, along with two of his research students, almost serendipitously synthesised nanosheets, which are 100,000 times thinner than a sheet of paper, made up of boron. The rich chemistry of boron is expected to make these nanosheets useful for not only storing energy but also for generating energy in a green way, said Jasuja, whose team published the findings in the journal ChemPhysChem recently. We are now working towards utilising these nanosheets for developing the next generation batteries and nanocatalysts.

World’s Longest Sandstone Cave Found in Meghalaya
The world's longest sandstone cave named Krem Puri was recently discovered in Meghalaya. It has a staggering length of 24.5 km, almost three times the height of Mount Everest, and contains some dinosaur fossils from 66-76 million years ago as well. 'Krem' means 'cave' in Khasi language. The cave system which is 24,583 metres long was discovered in near Laitsohum village, located in the Mawsynram area in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district. Though Krem Puri had been discovered in 2016 itself, its actual length was mapped only recently when the Meghalaya Adventurers' Association (MAA) took a 25-day expedition to this end. The dinosaur fossils in the longest sandstone cave in the world include those of the Mosasaurus, believe palentologists. It was a carnivorous aquatic lizard that resided on Earth around 66-70 million years ago.

March 26, 2018: TOI: Extinct in India plants find a new home in UK. Royal Botanical garden and Natural History Museum in UK has well preserved about 50,000 Indian species in its collection. Specimens started stored from 1790. The team spotted nearly 1000 extinct species. A total of 25,000 specimens have been digitized. Plants used to grow in Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar have now gone up the slopes in Darjeeling and Sikkim, a climate that the scientists  ascribe to global warming. About 8,00,000 specimens of Indian Plants were transported out of the country. (1704-1812). Specimens were sent till 1889. They cannot be transported back!.

MARCH 30, 2018: The Moon continues to transit Virgo until 1:53 PM EDT, after which it moves through balance-seeking Libra. The Moon in Virgo is particular and craves some semblance of order. The Libra Moon does too, but instead of seeking order through attention to detail, Libra looks for balance and order through pleasing interactions with others and aesthetics in its environment. Mars forms a semi-square with Jupiter today. Competitive feelings experienced now can be stimulating and invigorating, but we may not get the timing or estimation of our capabilities right. Venus forms a semi-square to Neptune, affecting our perception of the value of people and things. There is a tendency to gloss over problems or to see what we want to see, imagining the best or the worst when the truth is somewhere in between. Venus is about to enter a new sign, and this can point to last-minute doubts about our lovability and worth or about a relationship or comfort levels. The Moon is void from 1:00 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Jupiter), until the Moon enters Libra at 1:53 PM EDT.
