17 April, 2019: Electricity from Snowfall: Snow based triboelectric nanogenerator or snow TENG. Tiny 3D-printed generator creates electricity from snowfall. Snow is positively charged, and gives up electrons. Silicone, synthetic rubber like material, composed of silicon atoms and oxygen atoms, combined with carbon, hydrogen and other elements, is negatively charged. Falling snow contacts the surface of silicon, that device captures creating electricity. The device is inexpensive, small, thin and flexible like a sheet of plastic. Needs no batteries and it provides its own power.
17 April 2019, 12:27 IST: Scientist captures deepest radio images of Sun; A team of scientists at the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA) in Pune, Maharashtra have been leading an international group of researchers to understand some of these mysteries. "The sun is a surprisingly challenging radio source to study. Its emission can change within a second and can be very different, even across nearby frequencies." This work has also led to the exciting discovery of oscillations in the size of the radio-emitting region and its brightness. "These findings challenge the conventional wisdom of these oscillations arising in the local magnetised plasma and point to a new phenomenon operating deep down at the base of the solar atmosphere."

17:04:2019: Travel through wormholes would be slow: Study. Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity supports the existence of wormholes that could connect extremely long distances billion light years apart, different points in time, or possibly different universes. “The real import of this work is in its relation to the black hole information problem and the connections between gravity and quantum mechanics. Although this means the direct connection between the black holes is shorter than the wormhole connection, and therefore the wormhole travel is not a shortcut, the theory gives new insights into quantum mechanics. “From the outside perspective, travel through the wormhole is equivalent to quantum teleportation using entangled black holes.” To date, a major stumbling block in formulating traversable wormholes has been the need for negative energy, which seemed to be inconsistent with quantum gravity. However, Jafferis has overcome this using quantum field theory tools. “I think it will teach us deep things about the gauge/gravity correspondence, quantum gravity, and even perhaps a new way to formulate quantum mechanics.

April 22, 2019: 10:59 am: AP Man Toils For 14 Years to Build Innovation That Helps Weavers Save Time & Money! Leaving behind his dreams and ambitions, Sivakumar Modha decided to trudge down the revolutionary path that would bring respite to scores of weavers across the country. Sivakumar spent the next 14 years researching and developing an electronic Jacquard Machine that would replace the conventional punch-card mechanism to an image-based system incorporated to the loom through a pen drive! “Any design can be woven into a fabric using Modha Device, which is battery-operated. A pendrive with image files needs to be connected to the machine, which is already connected to the loom. But with Modha Device incorporated to a loom, the same design can easily be created within 5-10 minutes with zero time invested for design creation,” says Sivakumar. Apr. 25, 2019: Life May Have Evolved Before Earth Finished Forming. The first organisms may have evolved before the rocky planets formed. Elkins-Tanton said this basic idea grew out of a course she taught at ASU in the fall of 2016. At the beginning of the semester, she asked the students to consider whether life could have arisen on small bodies. Over the next few months, the students, Elkins-Tanton and her co-author on the newly presented work, Stephen West, explored this possibility, as well as a number of other questions that stemmed from that core question. Life as we know it requires three main ingredients: liquid water, organic molecules and an energy source. Planetesimals, which formed within 1.5 million years of the solar system's birth, likely featured all three, Elkins-Tanton said. For example, more than 35 different amino acids have been identified in the Murchison meteorite, an ancient space rock that fell to Earth in southern Australia in 1969.

Fig.4a Three steps to Hubble Constant.
The universe is expanding 9% faster than expected, but it’s unclear why? New research done using the Hubble Space Telescope has not been able to explain why the universe is expanding faster, but scientists have 3 theories. The previous value of the Hubble Constant — 67 km/sec/Mpc — had a margin error of 2.2 per cent. The new observation has tightened this margin to 1.9 per cent and has come up with a more certain value of 74 km/sec/Mpc, which is a whopping 9 per cent faster. One is that the hypothesised, mysterious dark energy, which is thought to have existed since the time of the Big Bang, is actually pushing matter away. Another idea is that there might be a new subatomic particle that researchers are still aren’t aware of, which travels near the speed of light. These particles make up the hypothesised ‘dark radiation’. A third explanation is that the dark and invisible matter that is not comprised of protons, neutrons, and electrons — of which all known matter in the universe is made — likely interacts more strongly with regular matter. It is likely that a new physics would be needed to study the expansion of the universe and what causes it to progress at the rates it does.

April 29, 2019: 11:34 IST: Coffee compound peps up solar cells performance. Coffee can help make traditional silicon solar cells more efficient. The research, published 25 in the journal Joule, may enable this cost-effective renewable energy technology to compete on the market with silicon solar cells. They added caffeine to the perovskite layer of forty solar cells and used infrared spectroscopy (which uses infrared radiation to identify chemical compounds) to determine that the caffeine had successfully bonded with the material. Conducting further infrared spectroscopy tests, they observed that the carbonyl groups (a carbon atom double bonded to an oxygen) in caffeine interacted with lead ions in the layer to create a "molecular lock." This interaction increased the minimum amount of energy required for the perovskite film to react, boosting the solar cell efficiency from 17 per cent to over 20 per cent.

April 30, 2019: 10:40 IST: New Technique Could Enable Colour Tuning In LED Bulbs. We demonstrate that this can be achieved by a single LED. We show that is possible to attain red, green and blue emissions originating from just one GaN LED-structure that uses doping with a single type of rare earth ion, Europium (Eu). Using intentional co-doping and energy-transfer engineering, we show that all three primary colours can emit due to emission originating from two different excited states of the same Eu3+ ion (~620 nm and ~545nm) mixed with near band edge emission from GaN cantered at ~430nm. The intensity ratios of these transitions can be controlled by choosing the current injection conditions such as injection current density and duty cycle under pulsed current injection.
