MY STAY DURING 1964-65, AT UPPSALA AND Prof. Manne Siegbhan AND HIS FAMILY AND SON Prof. Kai Siegbahn GENEROSITY AND ADMIRATION TO MY FATHER LATE Prof. K. R. Rao, D.Sc.(Madras) D.Sc. (London).

 Page 1:

I was a participant in the International Seminar for Education and Research at FYSIKUM at University of Uppsala, Uppsala, in the year 1964-65 and spent almost an year . There I met Prof. Manne Siegbhan and his family and had a photo with them. Also I met his son Prof. Kai Siegbahn.

I stayed in a room in Granitvagen, along with my neighbour friend S. S. Bhida from TIFR in another room, who did research in Plasma Physics laboratories of University of Uppsala.

My stay at Uppsala was very memorable even today I admire their generosity and support to help me. I was a Theoretician and did work on Li6 nucleus. Of course, on my request, they made it possible for me to work on a super accelerator of those days, thanks to work on the 250MeV accelerator. I have a picture of it and happy with it even today year 2021. It was a gracious love they have for my father Late Prof. K. R. Rao, D.Sc.(Madras) D.Sc.(London) is unforgettable. My sincere thanks to them who made it possible to visit and study at splendid places also I climbed the hig mountains of ALPS etc.

Page 2:

I have slid on the ice to reach the bottom of ALPS and of course, tumbled on it, and the Director Lindquist who accompanied us was very worried of my sliding, but luckily I reached the bottom safely.  Also he took me and other participants to the heighest mountains in Sweden, the height was so enormous that a direct fall from the edge, would land anyone to the straight bottom of 30,000 feet or so. I was afraid and was very careful to see the direct fall of the peak. There was wind and the Director was very careful to watch me along with other participants.

 Page 3:

I was attracted by the excellent snow that has spread out opposite my stay at Granitvagan residence at Uppsala. One fine morning with ordinary boots I walked on the snow for about a half mile wondering the spread os snow, but felt the snow was gripping my legs through the boots. Hurriedly, I walked back literally running and reached my apartment with great difficulty and wonder that my legs literally froze and especially the feet froze due to cold snow.

At my apartment I worked hard to bring back my foot back to normalacy, with a great exercise in my room, for more than an half hour. From that day I was scared of snow and never ventured out with ordinary shoes. People there use a second shoe to protect from snow, I was not aware of it, at that time.

Page 4:

On January 1st of 1965, my friend SSBhide who came to my room at my apartment and was excitedly banged the window door and was excitedly shouting happy New Year 1965. After a few hours, people came to my room and told they celebrate the New Year silently and no banging or shouting expected on that fortunate day morning. Being from India, we were stunned of their reminder and regretted very much of my friend's over enthusiasm of welcoming the happy New Year 1965.

S S Bhide worked in Plasma Physics Labs of University of Uppsala and was very happy with it. He was fluently impressed by an attractive girl, I forgot her name, very beautiful, but not attracted to her. Dr. M.C. Joshi, another participant of the International Seminar, one day asked me how to calculate a nuclear problem that experimentally he performed, a paper he published in Physical Review and surprisingly not acknowledged my name and the help  I gave him. Similarly I told Lenard Bolstrom how to calculate the field gradients, and he has also not acknowledged me but he helped on the flight to see the fascinating colors of Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis,  in Swedish Lapland.  Midnight Sun is when the sun never sets in the summer. The Midnight Sun is a 24-hour period of sunlight inside the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland. To see the beauty of the Northern Lights, head to Swedish Lapland between early September and late March. The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, appear during the beginning of September in and around Kiruna in the far north of Sweden. The sky comes alive as streaks of pinks, greens and purples dance high above. And by the time winter has fully set in around January, the Northern lights can be seen throughout Swedish Lapland – the large expanse of land in the northwest corner of Sweden that covers nearly a quarter of the country. The last glimpses of these undulating rainbows can be caught as late as the end of March or even early April. The long winter nights are welcomed by visitors flocking to witness this incredible light show. On clear evenings, the best time to see Northern Lights in Sweden is between 6:00 pm and 2:00 am. However, the most spectacular display usually takes place around 10:00-11:00 pm.The variation in colour depends on the kind of gas particles involved – low-lying oxygen causes the most common green colour, red is produced by oxygen higher in the atmosphere and the blueish purple hue comes from nitrogen. The result is a truly magical sight to behold as the vibrant colours snake across the night sky, dancing around as if moving to some unheard music. Kiruna is the country’s northernmost city, with a population of around 17,000 people. It is the perfect base for exploring Sweden’s great white north. From Stockholm, you can either take a scenic 12-hour train ride or a 90-minute flight. Whether you want to see the Aurora Borealis by car, snowshoe, snowmobile, dogsled or skis, you’ll find a tour company in Kiruna that has the perfect package for you. You can even see them up-close on a Northern Lights Flight operated by Spaceport Sweden. The sky truly is the limit when it comes to Northern Lights tours in Kiruna. Swedish Lapland is a region unlike any other. The land of the Midnight Sun and Northern Lights is home to mountains, forests, marshes, wild rivers and archipelagos. Stretching from Sorsele and Skellefteå in the province of Västerbotten, to the northernmost tip of Sweden, this arctic territory covers a quarter of the country. The sheer size and variety of terrain presents the outdoor enthusiast with endless options, from hiking and fishing to dog sledding and skiing. You’ll sleep in either a Sami-designed, grass-roofed log cabin or a traditional goathie hut.Swedish Lapland is a winter paradise with a long skiing season. At the famous Riksgränsen ski resort you can hit the slopes as late as midsummer. For something a little different, Aurora Safari Camp, Sweden’s first ever wintertime glamping site, offers hot air balloon rides by night or day, allowing you to admire snow-covered treetops and the Råne River Valley from high above. Thanks to Swedish people who made it possible for me to visit the midnight land, Lenard Bolstrom asked me to photograph the beautiful Aurora Borealis, while flying on plane,  an enormous view, but my camera gifted to me by my brother Dr. K.V. N Rao Ph.D.(Ill) in US a Nikon-F camera, I feel very sorry even today for my absent mindedness. Kiruna trip was fantastic.

Page 5:

Thanks to the Swedish people especially Prof. Manne Siegbahn and his family who made it possible for me to visit all Swedish magnificient places. My father late Prof. K. R.Rao D.Sc. (Madras) D. Sc. (London) was very much attached to them. I had an opportunity of a grand event of their music by several artists. A very young beautiful girl, must have been of the family of Royal People,  accompanied me witnessing the remarkable and amazing orechestra with young and attractive gentlemen, for nearly an half hour they played the typical Swedish musical instruments. I have a photograph of that event. Alas, the days of my stay and grandeur only remained as my enchanting memories. (Photograph is with me in my collection).

Page 6:

I had been to Europe countries during the year 1965, and visited England, Switzerland, France, Czeckslovakia and Egypt etc several monumental countries where at I had an opportunity to see the astounding constructs of the ancient times and as well of the modern age.

Page 7:

It was astounding and vivabrating to visit the countries and places, and I am fortunate to have an educated person, who drove me in England and shpwed me important places like No.10 Prime Minister residence, Buckingham Palace, change of guards, and other monumental places. It is unfortunate  that I have not recorded his name and address of place of work. Even to-day I feel very much sorry about it.

Geneva city in Switzerland was very fascinating. I had been to that country and marvelled at the high mountains, extensive  and enormous lakes. Scintillating sunset over the mountains was mesmerizing. Juric town  and next the Geneva town were very famous and housed several International societies. Geneva town on the East located the ALPS mountains and on the west Jura mountains are situated. On the hills one  can see the extensive spread of snow and skiing facilities and several resorts were located. My father Prof K. R. Rao during 1929-30 had a picture of it when he visited. Mont Blanc, visible from anywhere in the country. I am especially attracted to the Geneva lake  (in French called Lock Limo) spread out like a Peacock form and in it a 140 meters height fountain  (Zedogeneva) forms a great attraction to visitors. I spent a lot of time seeing the Fountain. Also one can move around in ships, a facility available for the interested. Many Indians travel to this country and often the return flights are all booked by Indians. KLN.

In France I travelled by a  Tourist Bus and it was a great and a golden opportunity to know the European Country. Of particular interest was the Effiel Tower a gigantic construct and I had, those days the opportunity to climb it by lift and also had a memorable photograph with the Effiel Tower as the background.

 Page 8:

The nation Czekoslovakia was a moderate city and offered their culture and valuable item of great attraction. Of course, I don't have enough money to purchase these splendid items. But saw several selling shops and luxurious places of sale.

Page 9:

It was an exburant trip to Egypt where I climbed the 'camels' and visited the gigantic Pyramids and astounding statues of their Kings and Rulers. I was particularly cautious of the little money I have and was of course, warned of skillful losses. Egyptian towns and cities are full of variety of artefacts that would mesmirize any visitor. I don't have money but luck allowed me to see their merchandize and places of closely packed selling shops. Many foreign visitors, spend lot of time and also purchase lot of ancient Egypt articles.

Page 10:

Later as a Professor and Head of the Bombay University, Physics Department, Dr. M. C. Joshi came to Kolhapur 416004 my place of work and enterprize at Shivaji University, and appreciated me. But, I don't even today the reason of his visit and meeting me at Kolhapur. He was carrying a small packet of nuclear sample, possibly radio-active, in his pocket of the shirt that I noticed at Uppsala itself in 1964. May be the cause of his cancer and subsequently he died due to cancer, just like his well grown up son.

Fig.02. Cheyeru flood in Rajampeta mandal
Annamaya dam collapsed around 5AM and the flow of water inundated the several villages. Nearly 57 people were washed out in the flood. Throught the night it was raining on Nov.18, and the bus Palle velugu got stuck in the flood with three people died and 12 people were saved. Chennai-Mumbai developed railway bridge and nearly one km train track got destroyed. A bridge got a big hole in Anjenayapuram. Kadapa-Tirupati buses got stuck due to this. Most trajic is that the priest family of nine people and another 22 people got washed away in the morning due to collapse of Annamaya dam. They were performing puja at ancient Sivalayam, due to Kartika Masam in the early morning, the last puja of the Kartika month. The flood waters due to dam collapse reached them and they were washed away. It appears one boy of that family swam across about 5 km to reach the shore. Possibly he is the only one of that fateful family.

Nov. 21, 2021: A US based research has put India right at the beginning of geological time. A joint effort by scientists in India, Australia and the US locates the earth's earliest crust in the Singhbhum region of Jharkhand. The study asserts that the continents arose through not tectonic movements but from massive bursts of lava that gradually hardened into land masses in about 3.5 to 3.2 billion years ago. One of the mineral-rich regions of India, it has a huge reserves of copper, coal, iron ore and even traces of gold and silver. West of Singhbhum is a hot bed of Naxalites violence. Lions once roamed the area of dense forests. Forest cover shrank today and the lions gone.  The world’s first beach was actually formed in a small district in India’s Jharkhand. The most fascinating part of this research is that scientists have raised claims over the formation of the first-ever beach in the world in the Singhbhum district of Jharkhand, which is currently surrounded by land and has no major ocean attached to it. Priyadarshi Chowdhury, the lead scientist of the study, said, “We found a particular type of sedimentary rocks called sandstones. We then tried to find their age and in which conditions they have formed. We found the age by analysing the uranium and lead contents of tiny minerals.” The scientist further said that these rocks are over 3.1 billion years old, which were formed in ancient rivers, beaches, and shallow seas. These water bodies could have existed only if there was continental land, which suggests that the Singhbhum region was above the ocean around 3.1 billion years ago.

This Giant Mexico Cave Has 500,000 Years Old Huge Crystal Pillars.  Buzz Staff 8 hours ago. The Giant Crystal Cave in Mexico is a working mine that is popular for its extraordinary selenite crystals. There are giant crystal pillars buried about 984 feet below Sierra de Naica Mountain in Chihuahua, Mexico. The mine was discovered in 2000 by two brothers, who worked for Industrias Peñoles. They were reportedly mining a tunnel underneath the Naica Mountain and accidentally stumbled upon the mine. These crystals are actually made of gypsum, a type of mineral used as a filler in the paper and textile industries. It is also used in cement to make buildings. You will be surprised to know that these crystal pillars are more than 5,00,000 years old. Many are so big that they can be easily walked on. Since they were buried beneath the earth for years, the crystals kept growing. According to the Science How Stuff Works website, human beings can’t enter the cave without a special cooling suit. With 90 to 99 percent humidity, the temperatures inside the cave can go up to 58°C. There is no natural light inside it and the air is also acidic, which makes it dangerous for human beings. Very hot liquefied rocks, i.e., magma, were found under these crystals, and about 26 million years ago, groundwater laced with calcium sulfate entered the caves and heated from magma below, which began to create the gigantic crystals.

Nov. 25, 2021: Astronomers have so far identified nearly 60 smaller galaxies within 1.4 million light-years of the Milky Way, though it's likely there's a lot more hiding in the dark. Most look like they're hanging around, like fruit flies around a banana. According to a new analysis of data from the Gaia satellite, however, most of those galaxies are actually relatively new to the area – too new to be orbiting the Milky Way, at least not yet, researchers think. "We conclude that due to their unequaled high energies and angular momenta, most dwarfs cannot be long-lived satellites, and if they could be bound to the Milky Way, they are at first passage, i.e., infalling less than 2 billion years ago," researchers write in a new paper led by astrophysicist François Hammer of the Paris Observatory in France. If a dwarf galaxy can survive longer than this – as had been thought for the Milky Way dwarf galaxies – something must be holding them together, such as higher concentrations of dark matter, the invisible glue that binds the Universe together. The possibility that dwarf galaxies have a surprising amount of dark matter is already strongly hinted at by the motions of their stars, which cannot be explained by the presence of normal matter alone.

Nov. 5, 2021: 6 hrs ago: West Bengal, following unprecedented devastation after two cyclones, Cyclone Amphan and Cyclone Yaas, residents of two islands in the Sundarbans — Ghoramara and Mousuni —were moved away to safety by the West Bengal government as tidal waters and rainfall pose grave risk to their lives while much of their property has already been claimed by the sea in July 2021. Man and animal have cohabited these islands, but climate change has out a question mark on the existence of Sundarbans itself, which incidentally also features on the Unesco World Heritage List. According to a climate threat assessment report released by the Centre last year, the Bay of Bengal area where the Sundarbans lies is one of the most climatically vulnerable zones in India with an increase in sea levels and flooding presenting the greatest risk. An analysis of data between 1891 and 2018 showed that the Bay of Bengal region was struck by 41 severe cyclonic storms and 21 cyclonic storms during the given period. All these events had occurred in the month of May.

Nov.14, 2021: Couple grows world's largest potato weighing a whopping 8 kgs. Yesterday 12:05 pm. In a bizarre series of events, a couple from New Zealand ended up growing a potato as large as the size of a turkey weighing a whopping 7.8 kilograms. This might also be the largest potato to be ever recorded in history. The couple, Colin and Donna Craig-Brown were going about their day, weeding their garden near Hamilton when they suddenly found something unusual and began digging. At first, they thought that this might be a kind of root or a fungal growth but as they dug deeper, they were dumbfounded by the large object. After they pulled it out, Colin tasted a piece and discovered that it was a potato. The couple has named it 'Doug' and have applied to Guinness to have Doug officially recognized. They are currently waiting for a response. In 2011, 'tater' from Britain was declared as the largest potato which was under 5 kgs. The couple had planted potatoes about 2-3 years ago and since then have been growing cucumber. They said that they have no idea how this huge one got there. Speaking to a leading paper, they said, "It’s fair to say our veggie garden can sometimes get a bit feral. There are some parts of the garden you need to pack a lunch and advise your next of kin before heading in to." Colin further added, "It’s a mystery to me, It’s one of nature’s little pleasant surprises."
