Jan. 16, 2022: Govt inaugurates country’s first coal to methanol plant built by BHEL Sakshi Kuchroo 11 hours ago. The important goals of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision is to build a self-reliant nation. “The role of the manufacturing sector will be crucial in realising this vision. The government has already highlighted the importance of the manufacturing sector through schemes like Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat”. The 0.25 TPD (tonnes per day) capacity CTM pilot plant that has been indigenously designed, developed and installed by BHEL is currently producing methanol with purity of more than 99 per cent from high-ash Indian coal. Significantly, this conversion of high-ash Indian coal to methanol through the gasification route is the first-of-its-kind technology demonstration in India.

It can be seen emerging near a water body and making a jump across the mud pathway at lightning speed. As it jumps to that great height, it seems like the animal is moving through the air. Then it safely lands on the opposite side and manages to hastily escape into the wilderness. A buzzing sound heard in the background adds to the awe of watching the animal. As the camera pans, a man also seen in the video is also stunned by the deer’s act.

The eruption sent Tsunami waves across the world as nations — from Japan to the United States of America — shut down beaches and activated emergency protocols. Monitoring centres in India picked up the atmospheric disruptions, The Hindu reported that the disruptions were recorded as a blip in the atmospheric pressure that suddenly spiked by around two hectopascals (hPa) around 8.15 pm in Chennai on January 15. This was around 10 hours after the eruption happened in Tonga.

Jan. 20, 2022, 12:41 PM·The La Pampilla refinery has leaked over 6,000 barrels of oil after a tanker was hit by waves linked to Tonga's volcanic eruption on Saturday. Authorities have sealed off three beaches damaged by the spill and say they have discovered scores of dead animals covered in oil. The leak has harmed some 18,000 square kilometres (6,950 square miles) of protected zones containing a variety of rare plant and animal life. A government led clear-up of around three kilometres of beaches is also underway. The atmospheric wave pattern close to the eruption was quite complicated, but thousands of miles away it appeared as an isolated wave front travelling horizontally at over 650 miles an hour as it spread outward. This eruption was so powerful it caused the atmosphere to ring like a bell, though at a frequency too low to hear. The wave front travelled outward from Krakatoa and was observed making at least three complete trips around the globe. The waves seen after Krakatoa or the recent Tonga eruption are very low-frequency sound waves. The propagation occurs as local pressure changes produce a force on the adjacent air, which then accelerates, causing an expansion or compression with accompanying pressure changes, which in turn forces air farther along the wave's path.

In the endeavour to unfold the nature of dark matter, a trio of theoretical physicists, Professor of Physics Arunansu Sil and two of his PhD. students Arghyajit Datta and Rishav Roshan of IIT Guwahati, Physics Department find that the origin and production of dark matter can actually be connected to the origin of neutrino mass. The mystery of neutrino mass may be related to the lack of its right-handed counterpart. In fact, the present work of the team shows that the lightest right-handed or sterile neutrino provided it exists as a part of a popular neutrino mass generation mechanism, having a mass of order a kilo to a mega electron-volts can be the dark matter candidate, the origin and production of dark matter can actually be connected to the origin of neutrino mass.
Jan. 29 2022 15:18 IST: Solar Storm That Struck Earth 9200 Years Ago Is Damaging Ice Buried Under Greenland: Study. A study revealed an immensely strong solar storm had struck the Earth 9,200 years ago, damaging the ice deeply buried underneath Greenland and Antarctica. This 9200-year-old solar storm was detected when researchers were looking for radioactive isotopes of beryllium-10 and chlorine-36 in ice cores. Further, when high-energy cosmic particles had reached the Earth during the massive solar storm then those ice cores were created, and radioactive isotopes got preserved in ice for thousands of years. According to the study, the authors had examined numerous cores excavated in Antarctica and Greenland, LiveScience reported.
Jan. 30, 2022: In the chaos before cooling, a fraction of these particles collided to form short-lived “X” particles — so named because of their mysterious, unknown structures. “X” particles are extremely rare, although physicists have theorised that they may be created in particle accelerators through quark coalescence, where high-energy collisions can generate similar flashes of quark-gluon plasma. Now physicists have found evidence of “X” particles in the quark-gluon plasma produced in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, based near Geneva, Switzerland. The team used machine-learning techniques to sift through more than 13 billion heavy ion collisions, each of which produced tens of thousands of charged particles. Amid this ultra-dense, high-energy particle soup, the researchers were able to detect about 100 “X” particles, of a type known as “X” (3872), named for the particle’s estimated mass. The results mark the first time researchers have detected “X” particles in quark-gluon plasma — an environment that they hope will illuminate the particles’ as-yet unknown structure.
