THOTLAKONDA MONKS AND THEIR MEDICINES

A cistern was probably used for therapeutic purposes supported by the Ph.D. thesis given to University of Michigan, in 2003. Crops grown were medicinal herbs, and the slicks were used for pasting those herbs into balms, poultices and decoctions. Many kinds of ptions, decoctions, ointments, poweders and oil made out of roots, the fat of animals, leaves, fruits, gums, chunam, dry dung and salts were used for curing ailments. Dung and Urine used as emetics. Storerooms of medicines known as Kappiya Bhoomi. A quick check of the undergrowth on the two hills of Bavikonda and Thotlakonda threw up some 30 different herbs that were traditionally used as medicines in the region. The writings of ancient sages like Charaka and Vakbhata need to be verified.  In Pompeil, the Roman city buried by volcano Vesuvius about 200 years ago a whole garden of medicinal value was recreated with the help of Science.
