December 3, 2018: 15:10 IST:  Washington:   New supernova may rewrite the theory of exploding stars. Combining data from ASAS-SN, Kepler, and telescopes around the world, the astronomers realized that ASASSN-18bt looked unusual during its first couple of days. "Many supernovae show a gradual increase in the light they put out."  "But for this event, you could clearly see there's something unusual and exciting happening in the early times, an unexpected additional emission."  Type Ia supernovae originate from the thermonuclear explosion of a white dwarf star, the dead core left over by a Sun-like star after it exhausts its nuclear fuel. The material must be added to the white dwarf from a companion star to trigger the explosion, but the nature of the companion star and how the fuel is transferred has long been debated. One possibility is that this additional light seen during the supernova's early times could be from the exploding white dwarf colliding with the companion star. Although this was the initial hypothesis, detailed comparisons with Piro's theoretical modeling work demonstrated that this additional light may have a different, unexplained origin. "While the steep increase in ASASSN-18bt's early brightness could indicate that the explosion collides with another star, our follow-up data don't fit predictions for how this should look," said Tom Holoien, from Carnegie. "Other possibilities, such as an unusual distribution of radioactive material in the exploded star, are a better explanation for what we saw."

Dec 06, 2018 09:47 AM IST: The dead donor of the womb was a 42-year-old mother of three who passed away from an episode of brain hemorrhaging or bleeding in the brain. Doctors at the hospital were able to remove healthy eggs from the soon-to-be-mother's ovaries and fertilized them with the father’s sperm. The fertilized eggs, or zygotes, were then frozen for a few weeks till the mother’s new uterus was accepted by her body's immune system and responsive to the fertility treatments. Six weeks after the uterus from the deceased donor was transplanted, the 32-year old to-be-mother began to have her period. The 32-year-old woman was born without a womb, a condition called Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome, where the vagina and uterus fail to form completely. This makes the partially-developed uterus an unfit environment to have a healthy pregnancy. 06-DEC-2018, 18:09: ISRO launches a low-volume satellite from PSLV, which has a capacity of about 2 tonnes, but GSAT-11 is launched by French Guiana Arianespace because the GSAT-11 satellite weighs more than 5 tons. At present, maximum 4 tons of satellites can be carried by GSLV Mk-III. That is why the French Arianespace's Ariane-5 rocket has been hired by ISRO to launch GSAT-11 which has a capacity of about 9.1 tons.

The brightest comet of 2018, officially called the 46P/Wirtanen, will be closest to earth from next week onwards, say reports. It is already visible in the night sky. It is zooming past us earth-dwellers from a distance of 11.5 million km away or 30 times the distance from the moon. Which means for us it appears to be lingering across the sky, more clearly, between December 14 and December 18. It will be brightest on December 16. The comet also called the Christmas comet, will be visible along with its halo of light. It will be as big as the full moon. It will, however, look like a fuzzy patch. The comet can be seen if you are using binoculars and away from the city lights. As per NASA, the comet is closer to us than it ever was in the last 400 years. The next time it will be as close as this year will be in the next 20 years.

11 Dec. 2018: 11:10AM: NASA probe finds signs of water on nearby asteroid Bennu. NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft has discovered ingredients for water on a relatively nearby skyscraper-sized asteroid, a rocky acorn-shaped object that may hold clues to the origins of life on Earth, scientists said on Monday. OSIRIS-REx, which flew last week within a scant 12 miles (19 km) of the asteroid Bennu some 1.4 million miles (2.25 million km) from Earth, found traces of hydrogen and oxygen molecules, part of the recipe for water and thus the potential for life, embedded in the asteroid's rocky surface. The probe, on a mission to return samples from the asteroid to Earth for study, was launched in 2016. Bennu, roughly a third of a mile wide (500 meters), orbits the sun at roughly the same distance as Earth. There is concern among scientists about the possibility of Bennu impacting Earth late in the 22 century.

In 2018, it will peak before dawn on Friday, December 14, when up to 120 meteors per hour are possible to see under dark sky conditions. Geminids meteors are often bright, intensely colored, and slower moving than average because they are produced by particles dropped by an asteroid designated 3200 Phaethon. The best time to watch for Geminids will be sunset on Wednesday until dawn on Thursday morning. At about 2 a.m. local time, the sky overhead will be plowing into the densest part of the debris field. The early-setting crescent moon on the peak night will provide a dark sky for meteor-watchers.
