Apr. 04, 2023:  IIT Guwahati researchers develop semiconductor for spectroscopic detection of trace chemicals. • Yesterday 5:20 pm. Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati researchers have developed a new form of a semiconductor, that can be used to identify trace chemicals using a technique called Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy or SERS.Spectroscopy is a technique that analyses the interactions between light and matters to identify and characterize many types of chemicals and molecules. There are various types of spectroscopic methods, of which SERS, is a sensitive technique that can detect extremely small amounts of various substances. The IIT Guwahati team designed an ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) dendritic nanostructure of the semiconductor, palladium di-selenide (PdSe2) and found that it exhibits high SERS amplification properties.  They used a method called Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) to produce these structures.  SERS is useful for the detection of trace amounts of chemicals in various situations – pollutants in water, biomarkers in blood, etc.  The researchers report that cost-effective dendritic 2D PdSe2 can replace the costly metal-nanoparticle-based plasmonic SERS substrates.

Apr. 04, 2023:Along Kerala's coastline, rising salinity means daily water struggle.  3h ago. Anthony Kuttappassera's family has lived in the same house at the edge of the Arabian Sea for more than a century. He grew up drinking water from the pond and the well outside his home.   But 60 years ago, that water became too salty to drink. Then it grew too salty for bathing or washing clothes. Now, the pond is green, buggy and nearly dry — just like the rest of the wells and ponds in the Chellanam area of Kochi.  Rising seas from climate change are bringing saltwater into the fresh water of places like Chellanam, rendering unusable what had been a vital part of everyday life. And frequent breaks in the pipelines that bring fresh water from inland exacerbates the misery for residents in this village of about 8 square km, requiring water to be brought in by trucks. Each truckload of water has to be poured into barrels and buckets and carried by hand to the village's 600 households.

Apr. 05, 2023: Distant repeating radio signal hints alien planet could host extraterrestrial life Science Desk • Yesterday 2:01 pm. Researchers have detected radio signals from a planet about 12 light-years from Earth, suggesting that the planet could be habitable to life. According to the University of Colorado Boulder, the radio signal from the rocky planet YZ Ceti b suggests that it could have its own magnetic field, something that is essential to life on Earth. Our planet’s magnetic field is quite important, and it does more than just make compass needles point north. It deflects high energy particles and plasma from the Sun, protecting our atmosphere and thereby, all life on Earth.

Earth 2.0? Repeating signal coming from rocky planet raises hopes. • 7h ago. As work continues to look for Earth 2.0, researchers are excited about the probability of finding a habitable world as radio emissions suggest possible magnetic interactions on a planet in our cosmic backyard. YZ Ceti b is a rocky planet located just 12 light years from Earth and it has piqued the interest of astronomers. Astronomers have observed a repeated signal emerging from the star YZ Ceti, which they believe is generated by the interactions between the magnetic field of the exoplanet and the star it orbits. What excites them is the strength of these signals, which are strong given the wide distance between Earth and the rocky planet.   The signals spark hope for a habitable world since the planet's magnetic field can prevent that planet's atmosphere from being worn away over time by particles spewed from its star. Earth's magnetic field works in a similar fashion, preventing dangerous cosmic rays from the Sun from hitting it directly.
