Sept 30, 2023 — 5.00am: Australian researchers claim to have detected ‘dark photons’ Liam Mannix. Dark matter is the fundamental framework that holds our universe together. Without its enormous gravitational pull to bring order to gas and dust, there would be no stars and no planets. Of this, scientists are sure. Unfortunate, then, that despite decades of effort they cannot see it or sense it.They are left to theorise and imagine. Perhaps dark matter is a giant ghost particle? Or a collection of black holes?

Oct. 02, 2023: Also known as the Kailasa and Cave 16, the Kailasanatha temple at Ellora is the largest monolithic rock-cut monument in the world. At 32 metres high and 78 metres long, it is widely considered remarkable for its size, architecture and sculptural treatment. The temple is unusual in that it is not a recreation of interior spaces like earlier Deccan cave temples such as those at Badami and Ajanta. Rather, it is a rock-hewn rendition of a structural Shaivite temple executed as a free-standing form in a large open court. The temple’s design appears to have been appropriated or developed from the Chalukya Dynasty’s Lokeshvara or Virupaksha temple at Pattadakal. Scholars have suggested that this is meant to represent the victory of its patrons, the Rashtrakuta Dynasty, over the Chalukyas, their former sovereigns. The temple’s iconography is influenced by Shaivite myths as well as the avatars of Vishnu; many sculptures appear to have been selected based on themes of the successful upholding of cosmic order, supporting the claims of its patrons to political ascendancy over the Deccan.

Oct. 24, 2023: Human sperm cells do not care about Newton’s third law of motion, and scientists don’t know why. Ankush Banerjee. Human sperm cells have unique characteristics, with a peculiar blob-like head and an extraordinarily long tail. Despite their appearance, these sperm cells defy the laws of physics simply by existing. Human sperm cells and the Chlamydomonas algae both move by wiggling their tails, or flagella. While this motion may seem innocuous, physicists are baffled as to how it works. In theory, the fluid surrounding the sperm cells should dissipate all the energy they exert, essentially rendering them stationary. However, the inherent elasticity of the sperm cells' shape-shifting flagella allows them to move without losing a significant amount of energy to the surrounding environment. This extraordinary property, which defies Newton's Third Law, is termed the 'odd elastic modulus.' This term is relatively new, introduced to the scientific community in around 2019 to help comprehend microscopic interactions.
