A team of researchers from the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad have now found that the rock, which emitted a pungent smell on its fall, was a rare kind of meteorite that had only been seen in India once —170 years ago. “Our preliminary description and study suggest that the meteorite is a rare, unique specimen of aubrite,” said the researchers, after analyzing the fragments and pieces recovered from the spot. According to the study, published in the journal Current Science last month, the fragments mainly contained a mineral known as enstatite, characteristics of which were similar to what is thought to be seen on the surface of Mercury. “This rare specimen of meteorite not only improves the existing meteoritic database, but will be important for understanding the planetary processes in future,” wrote the researchers.

Yesterday 11:30 pm.Ateam of researchers led by Miyuki Kaneko at Japan's Keio University used data from the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope to identify an unusual cloud of gas about 27,000 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius. The curved 'Tadpole' shape of the molecular gas cloud strongly suggests that it is being stretched as it orbits around a massive compact object. At the center of the Tadpole's orbit, there are no bright objects which could be massive enough to gravitationally hold the Tadpole. The best candidate for this massive compact invisible object is a black hole. Because black holes don't emit light, the only way to detect them is when they interact with other objects.

And this invention of the 51-year-old farmer from Karnataka, Bantwal Komale Ganapathi Bhat has caught the attention of social media users and bigwigs like Anand Mahindra. He has made a unique invention of an 'Areca bike' to help farmers zoom up tall areca palms, and has now modified the farm equipment to help farmers swiftly climb other trees as well. The machine is designed to help farmers climb trees with great ease. It can be rotated 360 degrees clockwise and anticlockwise. The seat is comfortable and with one litre of petrol, one can climb about 70-80 coconut trees. It weighs around 45 kg and comes with a trolley, making it easy to carry. Though anyone can single-handedly fix the machine to a tree, having someone to help will be an added advantage. It takes about one minute to fix the bike to a tree and another minute to climb. The device costs Rs 1.55 lakh, but with subsidy, it costs only Rs 1.12 lakh.
