Jul 24, 2017 17:55 IST: Scientists have discovered the ‘angel particle’, which is the antiparticle of itself,  80 years after it was predicted to exist. The particular type of Majorana fermion the research team observed is known as a “chiral” fermion because it moves along a one-dimensional path in just one direction. Since each Majorana is essentially half a subatomic particle, a single "qubit" of information could be stored in two widely separated Majorana fermions, decreasing the chance that something could perturb them both at once and make them lose the information they carry. 17 July 2017: Super-flexible and strong artificial silk developed spun from a soupy hydrogel that is 98% water. The remaining 2% of the hydrogel is made of silica and cellulose, held in a network by barrel-shaped molecules viz., cucurbiturils. Thin threads are a few millionth of a meter in diameter, when the hydrogel stretched for about 30 seconds, the water evaporates leaving the strong fibre. They are eco-friendly   textiles and serve as sensors. Different forces hold them and the hierarchy results in complex properties said Y. Wu a Ph. D  student in Cambridge.

July 19, 2017: Scientists in California have created rewritable paper, printed using light instead of ink. Despite the rise of e-readers and smartphones, the United States still uses 70 million tons of paper each year. The chemists at the University of California, Riverside, hope their new paper, which can be erased and reused up to 80 times, can help cut down that amount. At the heart of the new technology are nanoparticles, materials thousands of times smaller than the width of a human hair. (SOUNDBITE) (English) CHEMISTRY STUDENT RASHED AL EISA, WHO WORKED ON REPRINTABLE PAPER, SAYING: So this is actually the nanoparticles that I'm talking about. So what we do is we mix this one with this dye, which has the blue color and then we coat it on any kind of substrate we want. We can coat it on paper, we can coat it on glass or plastic. And then we can use some sort of mask with the writings we want, and when we shine a light on top of it, then after a couple of minutes, then we can see that the writings remain on this material. The writing fades in five days, as oxygen in the air takes electrons from the dye nanoparticles and turns them back to their original color. The process can be accelerated by heating the paper, making it reusable in a matter of minutes. And taking the idea of a paperless society one step closer to reality.

Meanwhile, a tropical depression was developing in the Pacific. Designated as storm Eight-E, it
will become Tropical Storm Hilary only if it reaches wind strengths of at least 39 miles per hour.
Thu, Jul 20, 2017: SEISMOLOGISTS are drilling into an earthquake hotspot in India, sparking fears that it could lead to huge tremor. India scientists are going to bore a hole into a site where earthquakes frequently occur in a bid to determine whether they are caused by nearby water reservoirs. Experts have been drilling into a mountain side in the Western state of Maharashtra where there is a nearby hydroelectric dam. In 1962, an earthquake at the dam caused the reservoir to be filled with more than a trillion litres of water. Since then there have been 22 earthquakes in the area, ranging from 5 to 5.9 on the Richter scale.
July 20, 2017: A flash flood washed away cars following a CLOUDBURST at Thathri village in Doda district of Jammu & Kashmir on Thursday. 13 people dead and 11 injured due to flash floods triggered by a CLOUDBURST in Thathri town with dozens of houses were washed away. Skeleton Lake, India: The glacial lake of Skeleton in Roopkund, Uttrakhand, India is situated in the isolated corners of the Himalayan mountains at a height of about 16500 feet (5029 m). In 1942, British forest guards discovered skeletons of more than 200 people frozen in the lake. The skeletons were initially thought to be Japanese soldiers who had invaded the territory in the World War II but a re-examination dated the samples back to 850 AD. The skulls all  had odd cracks in them leading to much speculation but scientists now claim the cracks were  from a freak hail storm that killed the entire community.

Fig.1 Angel Particle
Scientists have discovered the ‘angel particle’, which is the antiparticle of itself,  80 years after it was predicted to exist, a finding that could one day help make quantum computers more robust. However in 1937, physicist Ettore Majorana predicted that in the class of particles known as fermions, which includes the proton, neutron, electron, neutrino and quark, there should be particles that are their own antiparticles. Scientists from the Stanford University and University of California in the US have found the first firm evidence of such a Majorana fermion.

2017 will not be a surface water drought for California. Precipitation and snowpack in much of the state already exceeds that for an entire average water year. And we still have two months to go in California’s wet season. Despite these wet conditions, California has remnants of drought, some of which will persist for decades. Some Central Coast reservoirs remain very low. Groundwater in the southern part of the Central Valley remains more than 10 million acre-ft below pre-drought levels. Most of the groundwater deficit is in dry parts of the San Joaquin and Tulare basins, which could take decades to recover – with long-lasting effects on local wells. The millions of forest trees which died from the drought will need decades to recover
Pollution in Europe caused a drought in India that was one of its worst ever natural disasters, affecting more than 13 crore people, according to new research.  Sulphur dioxide produced mainly by coal-fired power plants causes a number of harmful effects, like acid rain, heart and lung diseases, and damage to plant growth. But sulphate aerosols also have a cooling effect on the atmosphere because it reflects sunlight back into space. However, emissions from the northern hemisphere can change the relative rate of warming in the south, causing the tropical rain-band to shift -with potentially devastating results.

NEW MATERIAL TO DETOXIFY WATER
Swansea researchers developed a method to effectively remove dye pollutants in water and break them down by almost ten times, more by using visible light. The composite is synthesised by growing ultrathin nanowires of tungsten on the surface of tantalum nitride. The composite offers a huge surface area to capture the dye. The material then breaks down the dye to molecules using the energy provided by sunlight. Absorbing the visible part of solar spectrum is for photo-catalytic degradation. July 6, 2017:
The observation of Ξcc++ (Xicc++) a new particle containing two charm quarks and one up quark. The existence of this particle from the baryon family was expected by current theories, but physicists have been looking for such baryons with two heavy quarks for many years. The mass of the newly identified particle is about 3621 MeV, which is almost four times heavier than the most familiar baryon, the proton, a property that arises from its doubly charmed quark content. It is the first time that such a particle has been unambiguously detected."In contrast to other baryons, in which the three quarks perform an elaborate dance around each other, a doubly heavy baryon is expected to act like a planetary system, where the two heavy quarks play the role of heavy stars orbiting one around the other, with the lighter quark orbiting around this binary system," added Guy Wilkinson, former Spokesperson of the collaboration. Measuring the properties of the Ξcc++ will help to establish how a system of two heavy quarks and a light quark behaves. Important insights can be obtained by precisely measuring production and decay mechanisms, and the lifetime of this new particle. The observation of this new baryon proved to be challenging and has been made possible owing to the high production rate of  heavy quarks at the LHC and to the unique capabilities of the LHCb experiment, which can identify the decay products with excellent efficiency. The Ξcc++ baryon was identified via its decay into a Λc+ baryon and three lighter mesons K-, π+ and π+. The observation of the Ξcc++ in LHCb raises the expectations to detect other representatives of the family of doubly-heavy baryons. They will now be searched for at the LHC. This result is based on 13 TeV data recorded during run 2 at the Large Hadron Collider, and confirmed using 8 TeV data from run 1. The collaboration has submitted a paper reporting these findings to the journal Physical Review Letters. Two charm quarks in a baryon have been identified with mass as 3621 MeV, which is almost four times heavier than the proton.
CERN-EP-2017-156 LHCb-PAPER-2017-018 July 6, 2017: Observation of the doubly charmed baryon Ξ++ cc: LHCb collaboration†: Abstract A highly significant structure is observed in the Λ+ c K−π+π+ mass spectrum, where the Λ+ c baryon is reconstructed in the decay mode pK−π+. The structure is consistent with originating from a weakly decaying particle, identified as the doubly charmed baryon Ξ++ cc . The mass, measured relative to that of the Λ+ c baryon, is found to be 3621.40±0.72(stat)±0.27(syst)±0.14(Λ+ c )MeV/c2, where the last uncertainty is due to the limited knowledge of the Λ+ c mass. The state is observed in a sample of proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.7fb−1, and confirmed in an additional sample of data collected at 8TeV.
July 7, 2017: A battery-less phone developed by University of Washington scientists, Shyam Gollakota, uses tiny vibrations in a phone's microphone or speaker to encode speech patterns in the reflected signals. To receive speech it converts encoded radio signals into sound vibrations, that are picked up by phone's speaker. Use of speech-pattern encoding is the secret behind the University scientists achievement.
