July. 18. 2021: 3 hrs ago: Why India must reckon with lightning, the biggest ‘natural forces killer'. Lightning struck a medieval watch tower at a fortification of the Amer Fort near Jaipur on July 11, killing 11 tourists. Two days later, the Dwarkadhish temple in Gujarat survived a hit, but the Chittorgarh Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, wasn't so lucky as a 40 kg stone broke off after a bolt hit the Kirti Stambh of the 12th century structure. There are complaints that the authorities have not done enough to protect the monuments from lightning strikes, including installing simple devices such as lightning rods and arresters. The lightning toll in Rajasthan, MP and UP within a few days in July is said to be 76; last month 27 people were killed while four flight passengers were hospitalised in West Bengal (the plane had suffered severe turbulence after going through a thunderstorm).

July. 22, 2021: 2 hrs ago: 6th-7th Century Post-Gupta-era Shiva Temple Discovered in Odisha. A four-member survey team of the INTACH documented the ancient site at Biropurusottampur in Pipili area, around 40 km north of Puri city. The thick roots have split the stone blocks and wide cracks have developed. The rear wall is dangerously leaning backward. The 'garbhagruha' (sanctum sanctorum) gets flooded because of the leaks on the roof. The entire temple may crumble anytime if proper measures are not taken immediately. The neatly-chiselled blocks denote an era when Kalingan traditional temple architectural style was in its infancy. The Kanasa plates of Loka Vigraha and Olasingh plates of Bhanuvardhana, issued in the 6th/7th century CE, throw light on worshiping of Maninagesvar (Shiva) and Naga Cult of the south Toshali region. Taking into account the material and style of this temple, it is evident that it was built at least 1,300-1,400 years ago, and is among the oldest intact temples in the region. Like the Prachi river, the mythical Ratnachira is in its death throes. Legend has it that Lord Rama had drawn the river to quench Sitas thirst, using her pearl ring to chart its course.

July. 27, 2021: 7 hrs ago: So what I tried to do is to look at how we can actually find some characteristic metallurgical profiles for different styles of bronzes in different dynastic periods like Pallava, Chola, Vijayanagara, which we can then use to make better attributions. For example, among the many Nataraja images I analysed were a few that fit into the metallurgical profile of the Pallava bronzes. There were a large number of them from the Chola period and there were none from the Vijayanagara period. It makes sense because in the Vijayanagara period there was a different kind of religious or cultic worship. The Vijayanagara rulers were staunch Vaishnavas whereas the Cholas were Shaivas. One could take the example of the Delhi iron pillar, which has the Sanskrit and Brahmi inscriptions giving attributions to Chandragupta of 400CE. But it has the same kind of commemorative value as that of the stone Ashokan pillars in front of monasteries. The iron pillar is the earliest surviving large forged iron artefact in the world.

Rare Basalt Rock Column, Formed Six Crore Years Back, Found In Maharashtra's Yavatmal. This rare rock formation was found last week at Shibla-Pardi village in Wani-Pandhakawda area of the district, a geologist said. This rare rock formation was found last week at Shibla-Pardi village in Wani-Pandhakawda area of the district, he said. Talking to PTI, environmentalist and geologist Prof Suresh Chopane said, "It is a rare natural rock called columnar basalt formed from the lava of a massive volcanic eruption in Maharashtra that occurred 60 million years ago. The hexagon-shaped pillars were formed due to the shrinking of the lava. "In the same area, I had found 200-million-year, old stromatolites ((layered sedimentary formations) depicting many early life forms on earth of Neoprotezoic age and six-million-year-old conch shell fossils near Pandharkavada and Maregaon tehsil, he said. Until 70 million years ago, there was an ocean on the now Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, he said. But 60 million years ago, during the late Cretaceous period, geographical events took place on the earth and from today's Western Ghats, hot lava flowed in the form fissures to Yavatmal district and central Vidarbha and up to Gujarat, known as Deccan trap, he said. The volcano covered an area of five lakh square kms in central India. In Maharashtra, 80 per cent of the rock formations are basalt igneous rock, which comprise plagioclade feldspar, auguite and accessory mineral like magnetite, he said. Chopane said that in India, St Mary's Island in Karnataka is famous as a tourist destination for such columnar basalt.

July. 04, 2021: Swami Vivekananda Poem. To the fourth of July,
July 4 however does not remain untouched with the Indian aspect. The person who was not only a great leader for India but also for the whole world wrote a magnificent poem in which he glorified liberty.
Behold, the dark clouds melt away, That gathered thick at night, and hung, So like a gloomy pall above the earth! Before thy magic touch, the world, Awakes. The birds in chorus sing. The flowers raise their star-like crowns- Dew-set, and wave thee welcome fair. The lakes are opening wide in love, Their hundred thousand lotus-eyes, To welcome thee, with all their depth. All hail to thee, thou Lord of Light! A welcome new to thee, today, O Sun! Today thousheddest Liberty! Bethink thee how the world did wait, And search for thee, through time and clime. Some gave up home and love of friends, And went in quest of thee, self-banished, Through dreary oceans, through primeval forests, Each step a struggle for their life or death; Then came the day when work bore fruit, And worship, love, and sacrifice, Fulfilled, accepted, and complete. Then thou, propitious, rose to shed, The light of Freedom on mankind. Move on, O Lord, in thy resistless path! Till thy high noon spreads the world. Till every land reflects thy light, Till men and women, with uplifted head, Behold their shackles broken, and Know, in springing joy, their life renewed!

We may be closer to uncovering its origin. Until that point, all FRBs had been observed outside our galaxy. "They’ve been billions of light years away, making them a lot harder to study," said doctoral candidate in physics Pragya Chawla from McGill University in Canada. April 2020’s discovery was also notable for being the most energetic radio blast that astronomers have ever recorded in the Milky Way, but what made it most exciting is that scientists are now closer to determining the origin of FRBs than at any point since they were first discovered.
