Sep 15 2022 11:55 AM: Engineer's Day: This dam has been serving continuously for 1850 years, was built by Chola king Karikala. By Laxman Chaurasiya. New Delhi: Engineers' Day is celebrated on September 15, the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya is remembered as an outstanding engineer, who was born in Muddenahalli, Karnataka. Be it the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam in Mysore or the Tighra Dam of Gwalior, the irrigation system and drainage system of many large areas bear the imprint of Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. But, the history of engineers in India is very old, from the period of Ramayana-Mahabharata to Harappan and Maurya-Gupta empires, even in ancient times, India was many times ahead of the rest of the world in this field. Whether it is building bridges on the sea or beautiful temples built by carving rocks, all these present a wonderful example of the skill of ancient India. However, it is ironic that it is not even mentioned in our textbooks. However, today on Engineers' Day, we are going to tell you about such a creation of engineers of ancient India, which still exists and is serving. A dam that has been serving continuously for the last 1850 years and is expected to continue to serve for many more years. It was built in 150 AD. Now you can imagine how many excellent engineers India used to have during that period. We are talking about the Kallanai Dam, also known as 'The Grand Anicut', located in the Cauvery river flowing from Tiruchirappalli to Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu. It was built by the great Chola ruler Karikala. The dam is located 15 km from Tiruchirappalli and 45 km from Thanjavur. The dam was constructed when water was required for irrigation over a large area. The region is also known as 'Chola Nadu', which is a delta region and has also been the cultural stronghold of the Chola Empire.

Sept. 17, 2022: India to roll out Hydrogen powered train on next I-Day.  Yesterday 9:35 pm. India will roll out its first hydrogen-powered train, designed, developed and manufactured indigenously, on the next Independence Day, Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said. “This train is better than all other trains on multiple parameters. A glass of water kept in the driver’s cabin stays undisturbed even when the train moves at the maximum speed indicating its stability,” Vaishnaw said. Referring to the Vande Bharat Express train, he said it took only 52 seconds to move from zero speed to 100 km per hour while the famed Bullet train of Japan took 55 seconds for the same. Vaishnaw said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked the engineers to build world-class trains which should be safe, stable and consume less energy besides running at a good speed. Attention was also being provided to cleanliness of railway stations and a satellite map had been prepared to identify 132 district headquarter towns that needed railway connectivity.
Sept. 17, 2022: Legends and beliefs associated with Mahalakshmi Temple, Kolhapur.  Thursday. Mahalaxmi temple is one of the Shakthi Peeths mentioned in Hindu Puranas (Hindu ancient religious texts). This temple is located on the banks of the Panchganga river in Kolhapur in the state of Maharashtra. The idol of the Goddess established at this temple is worshipped as Mahalaxmi or Ambabai. A legend tells about how the presence of Goddess Mahalakshmi was established at this place. Once one of the Sapt Rishi (seven great sages) sage Bhrigu went to Vaikuntha (celestial abode of Vishnu) to meet him, but as Vishnu was resting and he failed to greet Bhrigu. Angered, he attacked Vishnu, but he, in return, welcomed Bhrigu without any anger and realised his fault. But seeing this behaviour of Vishnu, goddess Lakshmi got angry and decided to leave Vaikuntha. Leaving Vaikuntha, she came to reside on earth and the place she chose was Kolhapur, the place where her temple is situated. After this incident, Vishnu tried his best to convince Lakshmi to return back to the abode, but she refused to listen to his reasons. Vishnu too stayed back in Tirumala waiting for Lakshmi. It is believed that without the blessing of Lakshmi or Ambabai, the blessings of Lord Tirupati are not considered complete.

The most compelling part of this article is that it has been entirely written by an Artificial Intelligence bot, OpenAI Playground, only by providing simple prompts. Though the author has edited the article, it is very minimal. It shows the ability of AI in the field which is specifically the domain of humans. Artificial intelligence is the process of making a computer system that can do things that normally require human intelligence. With the advent of this technology, there has been an increase in the use of artificial intelligence in writing articles. This is because AI can help to improve the quality of articles by providing more accurate information and by suggesting better ways to present the information.

Sept. 18, 2022: Dr Sudhakar Digumarthi, lead author of the study, former PhD student of CCMB, and now a scientist at ICMR-National Institute for Research in Reproductive and Child Health in Mumbai said: “We first sequenced the essential regions of all genes (around 30,000) using next generation sequencing in 47 well-characterised infertile men. We then validated the identified genetic changes in about 1,500 infertile men from different parts of India.” Dr Thangaraj, lead investigator of the study and Director of the DBT-Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics, Hyderabad said: “We identified a total of eight genes BRDT, CETN1, CATSPERD, GMCL1, SPATA6, TSSK4, TSKS and ZNF318, that were not known earlier for their role in human male fertility.”  He added that they have identified variations (mutations) in these genes that cause impaired sperm production leading to male infertility. The researchers have characterised a mutation in one of the eight genes,Centrin 1 (CETN1), to understand how it affects sperm production. They demonstrated the impact of CETN1 mutation in cellular models and found that the mutation arrests cell division, causing insufficient sperm production.
Sept. 18, 2022: Although realistic cooling was not achieved directly under the sun at mid noon, a steady cooling of around 10 °C below the ambient temperature under clear sky conditions was reported during the night. On a relatively low humid day a maximum cooling 15 °C below the ambient was also demonstrated. In later works, B. Orel et al. reported that mixing barium sulfate (BaSO4) with TiO2 as pigments in the white paint can improve the cooling performances even further, which is due to the enhanced absorption in the 8–13μm wavelengths range by the SO4 stretching vibrations of the BaSO4 content. Pigmented paints thus may have advantages over polymer films for nocturnal radiative cooling applications due to the flexibility of coating any suitable substrates with easily available regular paints. In further reports, white pigmented paints deposited on different kinds of roof material substrates with 85% solar reflection and 92% broadband IR emission were used for diurnal cooling. These broadband white paints did not provide cooling below the ambient temperature rather helped to reduce the substrate surface temperature close to the ambient temperature when illuminated under direct sunlight.

Astronomers discover seven new pulsars. by Tomasz Nowakowski , Phys.org. Using the Large Phased Array (LPA) radio telescope of Pushchino Radio Astronomy Observatory (PRAO) in Russia, astronomers have detected seven new pulsars and determined their basic parameters. The finding is reported in a paper published August 18 on the arXiv pre-print repository. however, some of them are also observed via optical, X-ray and gamma-ray telescopes. Now, a group of Russian astronomers led by PRAO's Sergey Tyul'bashev reports the detection of seven new pulsars. Astronomers have reported discovering seven new pulsars in deep space. Pulsars are like cosmic lighthouses. The majority of these rotate once per second (this type of pulsar is sometimes referred to as a "slow pulsar"), while over 200 rotate hundreds of times each second (this type of pulsar is referred to as a "millisecond pulsar").

Sept. 5, 2022: ‘Periodic table’ of hydrocarbons maps ‘magic’ molecules with exceptional stability. Calculating the energy of hundreds of hydrocarbons has led to the identification of ‘magic’ molecules with special stability. ‘It’s like the periodic table of hydrocarbons, ’The authors theorise that electronic effects, bond strain and delocalisation are among the prime suspects that contribute to this super stability. The map revealed a number of ‘islands’ and ‘ridges’ of stability, populated by prominent groups of molecules such as carbon clusters, polyynes and polyaromatic hydrocarbons. Most of these magic molecules prevail in natural environments, including interstellar space. ‘So far, our approach can’t predict absolute abundances,’ says Oganov. Nevertheless, this solution provides qualitative indications – ‘magicity’ indicates importance. The concept is borrowed from the world of atomic nuclei and nanoparticles, where it also successfully predicts stability and abundance. SV Lepeshkin et al, J. Phys. Chem. Sept. 2, 2022: Blasting plastic with powerful lasers turns it into tiny diamonds.  Simple plastics can be turned into tiny diamonds with a pulse of laser light, and a similar process may occur inside giant planets, which could explain some of their mysteries. Similar processes may occur at the high temperatures and pressures found within planets, which could help explain why Uranus and Neptune are so strange. Researchers have been able to create nanodiamonds before by shining lasers at a mixture of carbon and hydrogen, but it required extraordinarily high pressures. And within Uranus, pockets of superionic water left over from diamond formation could be conducting electric currents, which might have something to do with the strange shape of its magnetic field. Sept. 2. 2022: Superheavy element flerovium is likely to be a liquid at room temperature. Katrina Krämer. The first estimate of superheavy element flerovium’s melting point predicts that it is likely a liquid at room temperature. And although element 114 has a closed-shell configuration similar to a noble gas, computational simulations are now showing it does not behave as such in many ways. Less than 100 flerovium atoms have ever been observed – it can only be produced by fusing atoms of lighter elements together in high-energy collisions and its most stable isotope has a half life of only around two seconds. While scientists have performed some chemical experiments with superheavy elements, such as adsoption tests, exploring their bulk properties is usually not possible. Different experiments and calculations variously predicted flerovium to behave more like a noble gas or a volatile metal.

Sept. 6, 2022: Shocking! Black hole is not a hole actually- says Astrophysicist. Himani Jha - Yesterday 7:44 pm. Ablack hole is one of the biggest mysteries in our universe that scientists have been exploring for years. While we have been reading that a black hole can swallow everything that comes in its way including light as well, a new study by Oxford Astrophysicist Rebecca Smethurst, aka Dr. Becky has unfolded some shocking facts about these deadly holes. She has explained whether these black holes are fact or fiction, what's the truth behind it, what is the black hole, actually, do they really consume everything that comes in their way and other such questions. She explained that a black hole is actually a mountain of matter crushed into a very small space that is so dense that its escape velocity is greater than the speed of light which is considered as the fastest speed at 300000 km/seconds. And hence black holes are invisible as no light can get out of them. She shared that the black holes should be named dark stars.
Sept. 6, 2022: Rainfall deficiency in UP, Bihar to affect millions of farmers, reduce Kharif output. Karuna Sharma - Yesterday 3:49 pm. These eastern states have been witnessing drought-like conditions and a severe food and water shortage could be further exacerbated by the lack of rain. Low rains will also impact livestock and take a heavy toll on farmers’ livelihoods. The estimated paddy production in UP and Bihar is about 15.5 million metric tons (MT). And, the estimated damage is almost 20% of production, “We are looking at a net impact or loss of close to 3 million MT in the production of paddy from these (two) states. At the national level, the average annual production of paddy is close to 105 million MT. There is a possibility that other states can contribute and close the gap of 2.9-3%,” .

Sept. 12, 2022: One of the really interesting viewpoints I came across was marked with a board called "Rhythm of Erosion" about various "temples", pointing out a Shiva Temple, Isis Temple and Cheops Pyramid apropos where I was standing on the rim. I did some digging around (pun intended) to find out more about how a Shiva Temple happened to be here. Not only is there a Shiva Temple, but Hindus have temples to their "trinity" of Vishnu, Brahma and Shiva, as well as a shrine to Rama and another to Krishna. Buddha and Zoroaster also have "temples" here. Even Greek and Roman gods are represented with temples to Jupiter, Apollo and Diana. The other temples include Solomon, the Holy Grail, Isis, Thor, Horus and Confucius, to name a few. I am sure the inclusive names of these iconic mountains must resonate with many overseas visitors who worship these deities.

Sept. 12, 2022: Sarasa—The Gujarati kalamkari cloth that became a rage in Japan thanks to Dutch traders.  Yesterday 11:24 am. Chintz cloth produced for the Japanese market, sarasa cloth was used to make obi (waistband) and kosode (robe) linings during the Edo period (1615–1868) in Japan. The name may have derived from the Japanese word for chintz, or the Gujarati saras, meaning “beautiful.” The cloth is believed to have been introduced to Japan as a trade textile by the Dutch during the Muromachi period (1336–1573). In 1606, a trading post was set up in Petapoli, southwest of Machilipatnam, following which sarasa cloth began to be exported to Thailand, Indonesia and Japan. Sarasa cotton is dyed with five colours — dark red, indigo, green, yellow and brown — derived from natural and mineral sources. The processes used to dye the cloth include mordant painting and wax resist-dyeing, as well as hand- and block-printing using the kalamkari technique. Sarasas feature motifs and designs associated with Japanese culture, such as the lotus and the wheel, which are emblematic of Japanese Buddhist iconography. Chrysanthemums, pomegranates, squirrels, magpies and tortoise-shells were also depicted, along with floral arabesques with patterns in gold leaf.

The researchers have characterised a mutation in one of the eight genes, Centrin 1 (CETN1), to understand how it affects sperm production. They demonstrated the impact of CETN1 mutation in cellular models and found that the mutation arrests cell division, causing insufficient sperm production.

That is, in general, qw ≠ wq.

Sept. 15, 2022: Yaanam (which means journey in Sanskrit), a science documentary in Sanskrit produced by AV Anoop, is perhaps the first such film in the language. It became a reality because of film director Vinod Mankara’s desire to make content in Sanskrit, which had contemporary relevance. Vinod’s first attempt to make a Sanskrit film was  Priyamanasam, a feature film that won the award for the best feature film in Sanskrit at the International Film Festival of India in 2015.Made 22 years after GV Iyer’s film in Sanskrit,  Bhagavad Gita (1993), Priyamanasam broke new ground with its story and narrative. “I wondered why it took 22 years for someone to make a film in Sanskrit. I felt there was a misconception that Sanskrit was the language of devotional works, mantras and prayers. I wanted to deconstruct that template and make a film that had layers of romance, heartbreak, poetry and music,” he recalls. Set in 17th century Kerala,  Priyamanasam was based on the final years of maestro Unnayi Warrier and his struggle to complete his masterpiece, Nalacharitham Aattakatha, comprising some of the most famous plays in Kathakali. Many of the ancient Indian texts on astronomy and science were written in Sanskrit. Vinod had heard that  Surya Siddhanta, an ancient Sanskrit manuscript on astronomy, had described seven planets, mentioned the distance between Saturn and the Earth, the diameter of Saturn and so on. “Much later, with the help of telescopes, the distance between the Earth and the planets, the diameter of the planets and so on were calculated precisely. There wasn’t much of a difference between the calculations of the ancient Indian astronomers and latter-day astronomers,” explains Vinod.
