Apr. 18, 2022: World Heritage Day: Iron foundry in Nahargarh and tracing the roots of Metallurgy in India.  19 hours ago. In the 17th century Jaigarh held a highly productive cannon foundry, owing to the presence of iron ore mines near the fort. This foundry in the Jaigarh held a huge wind tunnel that would pull in air from the surrounding hills into its furnace, and the air blast would help create temperatures as high as 1320 °C for melting metals. The molten metal would then be passed onto a reservoir chamber from where it would go into cannon molds in the casting pit. The massive Jaivan Cannon, now on display within the fort premises, was made at Jaigarh fort by Raja Sawai Jai Singh using the foundry and devices inside the fort. For more than 7000 years India has seen skilled metallurgical works dealing with the “seven metals of antiquity” (as the metals that were in use from ancient times are sometimes referred to) more or less in order of discovery: gold, copper, silver, lead, tin, iron and mercury. The earliest evidences of metal work in the Indian subcontinent is  from a pre–Harappan site in Mehrgarh (Baluchistan), where a small copper bead was found that dated to around 6000 BCE, which was of native copper (not the smelted metal type that is extracted from ore). Copper metallurgy took a more advanced form in the Harappan era with its widespread trading networks and the available metal technologies. There are evidences of smelting furnaces from Harappan sites in the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent. There are also evidences of ancient copper ore mining from the Khetri region of Rajasthan that date to around 3rd-2nd millennium BCE. From archaeological evidences it has been found that the Harappans sourced their copper ores primarily from the Aravalli hills or from Baluchistan and its adjoining areas. From copper weapons, to the true saws, to bronze chisels for dressing stones, to bronze mirrors, bronze figurines (the famous dancing girl of Mohenjo daro), the Harappans were masters at the metallurgical sciences of their times, and used the lost-wax technique for creating their bronze figurines. Harappans also used gold, silver, and electrum (alloy of gold with at least 20% silver) for making various kinds of jewellery. The 500 kg heavy Sultanganj Buddha (dated between 500 and 700 CE) from Bhagalpur in Bihar (now at the Birmingham Museum), which was created using the same lost wax technique used by the Harappans 3000 years back from that time. Later the Chola era saw the production of some of the finest bronze murtis of Hindu deities, especially that of Nataraja Shiva, in the state of Tamilnadu. Wootz steel was then exported to Syria, where it was made into ‘Damascus swords’ that were famous for their toughness and sharpness. In the 12th century we find Arab Idrisi telling us, “The Hindus excel in the manufacture of iron. It is impossible to find anything to surpass the edge from Indian steel.” Studies on Wootz have shown that it was likely to have been an ultra-high carbon steel (with 1-2% carbon), and was believed to have been used for making Damascus blades with a watered steel pattern.

Apr. 18, 2022: six days ago: A doctoral candidate in electrical engineering at Stanford University, Okan Atalar said, “existing 3D cameras support specialized pixels. These have small fill factors meaning complex electronics will be needed to capture 3D in pixels. Our all-new approach is simple and integrates into everyday cameras like cell phones and digital cameras.” Atalar and his advisor Amin Arbabian said these new approaches can become the basis for a new type of compact, low-cost, energy-efficient lidar. The low inexpensive lidar can find its way to extraterrestrial rovers, drones, and other applications.

Science Made Simple: What Are Sterile Neutrinos? Sterile neutrinos are a special kind of neutrino that has been proposed to explain some unexpected experimental results, but they have not been definitively discovered. Scientists are looking hard for them in many different experiments. While the standard electron, muon, and tau neutrinos (and antineutrinos) interact with matter through two forces (the weak force and gravity), scientists think sterile neutrinos might interact only through gravity. This would make them even harder to spot than the tricky “regular” neutrinos. Gravity is the weakest of all the forces, and neutrinos are very light—so they don’t give gravity much to work with. Finding slight signals amidst the chaos of the universe will be tough, but not impossible. While they know of the three flavors of neutrinos, scientists aren’t sure how many kinds of sterile neutrinos there might be. Is there just one to add in, or perhaps a parallel three? Or maybe there are even more! Particles (including the wacky neutrino) have properties called spin and helicity. The particles don’t literally spin like a top, but this is still a good way of thinking about it. Helicity refers to how the spin relates to the movement of the particle, and it’s analogous to the idea of someone being left handed or right handed. Hold out your hands and make two fists. The way your fingers curl represents a particle’s spin, and your thumb points in the direction of travel. These are right-handed and left-handed particles, and they’re important because one of nature’s four forces—the weak force—does not treat them equally. The weak force strongly prefers to interact with left-handed particles. So far, scientists have found only left-handed neutrinos. But if there are right-handed neutrinos, they could be the predicted sterile neutrinos. Because the weak force would ignore them, sterile (right-handed) neutrinos would interact only through gravity, making them borderline invisible. One way to discover these secretive particles involves oscillation. Some experiments have seen an excess neutrino oscillation where theory predicted they shouldn’t be. And some experiments have seen neutrinos appearing or disappearing over much shorter distances than the experiments on neutrinos from more distant locations, such as the atmosphere or sun. If neutrinos oscillate into this fourth kind of neutrino, that could explain the rapid changes and the anomalies seen in experiments. Much more data is needed before anything can be decided definitively.  Neutrinos interact through two of the four Standard Model forces: the weak force and gravity. It is this lack of interactions (and their tiny mass) that gives them their ghostly nature. For example, 50 percent of the neutrinos coming from the sun will pass through a light-year of lead without interacting. But imagine a neutrino, already nearly massless, that does not interact through the weak force. How would scientists even know they were there? This is exactly the challenge with searching for “sterile” neutrinos. By measuring the decays of the Z boson, scientists were able to measure to a very high precision that only three neutrinos couple to the weak force: the electron, muon and tau neutrinos. But there could be any number of extra “sterile” neutrinos that LEP would be unable to see—though scientists would still need to figure out why. The hints of sterile neutrinos come from a couple of experiments. The Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector (LSND) experiment at Los Alamos National Laboratory studied a decay-at-rest beam made of mainly muon neutrinos and found more electron neutrinos than they predicted. This was a similar signature of oscillation that had been seen for the known neutrino flavors, but at a distance and energy combination researchers weren’t expecting. A similar signal at a new location is a hint that an unknown kind of neutrino was hiding behind the scenes.  The MiniBooNE experiment at Fermilab saw hints that could also be interpreted as extra electron neutrinos appearing due to the existence of the sterile neutrinos, but the MINOS experiment, Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment, and other projects looking for neutrinos disappearing due to sterile neutrinos did not see that signal.  While the short-baseline experiments look for light sterile neutrinos carrying a relatively small amount of energy—at the electronvolt scale—there could be different sterile neutrinos at different energies. Sterile neutrinos around 1,000 electronvolts could be related to dark matter or other cosmological issues. And neutrinos around 1013 gigaelectronvolts could be the heavy seesaw neutrinos that help explain the small neutrino masses we see in the known light neutrinos. At just above this scale, 1015 gigaelectronvolts, physicists also start talking about grand unified theories and how different forces relate to one another. So sterile neutrinos could tie into many different elements of physics. All neutrinos that scientists have seen so far are left-handed, and all antineutrinos are right-handed, but if there were right-handed neutrinos, they could act just like sterile neutrinos. Other particles have both left- and right-handed versions, and right-handed neutrinos are a popular way of adding neutrino masses into the Standard Model.

The average day temperatures – or the maximum that is recorded -- for the month for Delhi (33.2°C) was only the eighth warmest since 1951. In the case of Mumbai (33.5°C), the average day temperature was in fact cooler than usual -- in fact, it was the 24th coolest March in terms of day temperatures since 1951.

Apr. 2, 2022: Argonne National Laboratory, scientists have achieved efficient quantum coupling between two distant magnetic devices, which can host a certain type of magnetic excitations called magnons. These excitations happen when an electric current generates a magnetic field. Coupling allows magnons to exchange energy and information. This kind of coupling may be useful for creating new quantum information technology devices. “Remote coupling of magnons is the first step, or almost a prerequisite, for doing quantum work with magnetic systems”

Apr. 2, 2022: The study mentioned that the core of Earth is leaking Helium-3, a rare isotope of helium gas. And as all the Helium-3 is from the Big Bang event itself, it hints that Earth has formed inside a solar nebula! The solar nebula was said to be the rotating, flattened disk of gas and dust from which the solar system itself originated. The discovery of Helium-3 shows that this element exists in huge volumes on Earth, even though its location and quantity are undetermined. Even though some natural processes, such as the radioactive decay of tritium, can produce helium-3, this fundamental element is mostly produced in nebulae. "Volatiles from the solar nebula are known to be present in Earth's deep mantle. The core also may contain solar nebula-derived volatiles, but in unknown amounts".

Dec. 18, 2020: An especially counter-intuitive feature of quantum mechanics is that a single event can exist in a state of superposition — happening both here and there, or both today and tomorrow. Such superpositions are hard to create, as they are destroyed if any kind of information about the place and time of the event leaks into the surrounding — and even if nobody actually records this information. But when superpositions do occur, they lead to observations that are very different from that of classical physics, questioning down to our very understanding of space and time. Scientists from EPFL, MIT, and CEA Saclay, publishing in Science Advances, demonstrate a state of vibration that exists simultaneously at two different times, and evidence this quantum superposition by measuring the strongest class of quantum correlations between light beams that interact with the vibration.

Dec. 9, 2020 1.18pm GMT: Matter is what makes up the universe, but what makes up matter? This question has long been tricky for those who think about it – especially for the physicists. Reflecting recent trends in physics, my colleague Jeffrey Eischen and I have described an updated way to think about matter. We propose that matter is not made of particles or waves, as was long thought, but – more fundamentally – that matter is made of fragments of energy. Our theory begins with a new fundamental idea – that energy always “flows” through regions of space and time. Think of energy as made up of lines that fill up a region of space and time, flowing into and out of that region, never beginning, never ending and never crossing one another. Working from the idea of a universe of flowing energy lines, we looked for a single building block for the flowing energy. If we could find and define such a thing, we hoped we could use it to accurately make predictions about the universe at the largest and tiniest scales. For the math and physics aficionados, it is defined as A = -⍺/r where ⍺ is intensity and r is the distance function. For the precession-of-Mercury problem, we modeled the Sun as an enormous stationary fragment of energy and Mercury as a smaller but still enormous slow-moving fragment of energy. For the bending-of-light problem, the Sun was modeled the same way, but the photon was modeled as a minuscule fragment of energy moving at the speed of light. In both problems, we calculated the trajectories of the moving fragments and got the same answers as those predicted by the theory of general relativity. We were stunned.

To describe our ancestors as ancient or primitive is often a misnomer. The word conveys the image of man as barbaric, rough and uncouth to the ways of the world. It is erroneous. As the findings of the stunning petroglyphs in Konkan prove — before there was language, there was art. Dating back to 5,000 years to almost 20,000 years, the petroglyphs from the Konkan region of Maharashtra and Goa are a stunning evidence of the ability, observation and life of our ancestors. Carved on the laterite Konkan plateau, these works are an evidence of life during that period. Sudhir Risbud of the Nisargyatri Sanstha, and a dedicated naturalist, says, “From the perspective of the history of human evolution, petroglyphs are the first example of a human being’s need for expression.”

Apr. 9, 2022: Unraveling the Mystery: How Wave-Particle Interactions Generate Other Plasma Waves in Geospace. Nagoya University.  Researchers from Japan show that high-frequency plasma waves in the Geospace can generate low-frequency plasma waves through wave-particle interactions by heating up low-energy ions, unveiling a new energy transfer pathway in collisionless plasma.  A prominent signature of plasma — a state of matter characterized by freely roaming charged particles interacting via electromagnetic forces — is the generation of “plasma waves,” resulting from an instability of plasma distributions. “Fast magnetosonic waves” (MSWs) are one kind of electromagnetic plasma wave in the Geospace. MSWs result from hot protons and are considered “high frequency waves.”Another kind of wave commonly generated in the Geospace is the “electromagnetic ion cyclotron” (EMIC) wave, which is considered a “low frequency wave.” Recently, satellite observations in the Geospace have shown that MSWs and EMIC waves often occur together. However, the mechanism underlying this co-occurrence has remained unclear.

Apr.15, 2022: Evidence of earliest known use of Maya calendar that predicted 2012 doomsday found in pyramid. 17 hours ago. Researchers have now found the first evidence hinting at the earliest-known use of the Maya calendar on mural fragments dating from the third century BC inside the ruins of a pyramid in Guatemala. Researchers analysed 11 fragments of ancient Maya wall painting that are part of the larger San Bartolo mural fragment corpus, a collection of approximately 7,000 mural fragments excavated from the site. The Mayan civilisation, similar to the Aztec and Inca, was an ancient civilisation of modern-day America that flourished more than two thousand years ago. The 260-day calendar was used throughout ancient Mesoamerica and is still used among some indigenous communities in southern Mexico and Guatemala.  In a study published in the journal Science Advances, researchers said that the 7-Deer day record represents the earliest securely dated example of the Maya calendar and is important to understanding the development of the 260-day count and associated aspects of Mesoamerican religion and cosmological science. The date 7-Deer, recorded on a glyph, represents a day in the 260-day calendar. Deer is one of four days of the Mesoamerican calendar on which the 365-day year could begin, known as a "Year Bearer." The fragments were found at the San Bartolo archeological site in the jungles of northern Guatemala, which gained fame with the 2001 discovery of a buried chamber with elaborate and colorful murals dating to about 100 BC depicting Maya ceremonial and mythological scenes, researchers said on Wednesday.  Two mural fragments dating to about 200 BC to 300 BC from the San Bartolo Preclassic ancient Maya site in Guatemala bearing evidence for the earliest use of the Maya calendar, a symbol for the calendar date "7 Deer" (top) and as well as a partial hieroglyphic text (bottom). (Photo: Science Advances). The pieces with the "7 Deer" glyph were unearthed inside the same Las Pinturas pyramid where the still-intact later murals were located. The fragments with glyphs were collected from two areas during archaeological excavations. David Stuart, lead author of the research and a professor of Mesoamerican art and writing at the University of Texas described the fragments as "two small pieces of white plaster that would fit in your hand, that were once attached to a stone wall."  "The wall was intentionally destroyed by the ancient Maya when they were rebuilding their ceremonial spaces - it eventually grew into a pyramid. The two pieces fit together and have black painted calligraphy, opening with the date '7 Deer.' The rest is hard to read," Stuart told Reuters. The calendar, rooted in observations of the movements of the sun, moon, and planets, was based on a ritual cycle of 260 named days. The 260-day calendar, called the tzolk'in, was one of several inter-related Maya systems of reckoning time, also including a solar year of 365 days, a larger system called the "Long Count" and a lunar system. The calendar was among the achievements of a culture that also developed a writing system encompassing 800 glyphs, with the earliest examples also from San Bartolo. The Maya built temples, pyramids, palaces, and observatories and engaged in sophisticated farming without using metal tools or the wheel.

Apr.15, 2022: The Brahmin Files: Why atrocities on Brahmins remain one of the best-kept secrets in independent India. 18 hours ago. It is this tendency to move on and restart life silently that has ensured the atrocities on Brahmins remain the least known phenomenon. Even the organised killings of Brahmins, especially in Maharashtra, after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi are confined to the realm of speculations. How many people died? No one knows for sure. How much property was destroyed by the arsonists? Again, there are no definite answers. It’s pure luck that American scholar Maureen LP Patterson thought of researching on the aftermath of Gandhi's murder on the Maharashtrian Brahmins, especially the Chitpavans, to which sub-caste Godse and Savarkar belonged. It was sheer coincidence that PL Inamdar, lawyer of DS Parchure, one of the accused in the 1948-49 Red Fort Trial, thought to pen down his memoirs. And Congress chief minister of Central Province decided to validate his devotion for Gandhi when he made grandiose claims in his book about how he facilitated the persecution of the Brahmins soon after the assassination.

Apr.15, 2022: The vast object is called GNz7q, and it existed when the universe was just 750 million years old, about 13 billion years ago. GNz7q is shrouded in dust, so researchers still aren’t sure what it is. But based on current theories of black hole formation, and the sheer size of the object, the astronomers believe GNz7q is the precursor to a supermassive black hole. Their research is published this week in Nature. How the first black hole in the universe formed is “still one of the largest unknowns,” said study author Seiji Fujimoto, an astronomer at the Niels Bohr Institute of the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, in an email to Gizmodo. One common theory, he said, is that the first black hole emerged from the first dead stars and swiftly swallowed up surrounding material. Another idea is that gas in the early universe collapsed, directly producing a black hole without an intermediate stellar period. A dusty compact object bridging galaxies and quasars at cosmic dawn. S. Fujimoto, et al., Here we report observations of an ultraviolet compact object, GNz7q, associated with a dust-enshrouded starburst at a redshift of z=7.1899+/-0.0005. The host galaxy is more luminous in dust emission than any other known object at this epoch, forming 1,600 solar masses of stars per year within a central radius of 480 parsec. A red point source in the far-ultraviolet is identified in deep, high-resolution imaging and slitless spectroscopy. GNz7q is extremely faint in X-rays, which indicates the emergence of a uniquely ultraviolet compact star-forming region or a Compton-thick super-Eddington black-hole accretion disk at the dusty starburst core. In the latter case, the observed properties are consistent with predictions from cosmological simulations and suggest that GNz7q is an antecedent to unobscured luminous quasars at later epochs.(less).
