February 16, 2022 4:50 pm IST: Massive Sinkhole Swallows Freshwater Stream In Kashmir, Locals Puzzled. A large number of fish including trout have perished in the dying stream. Officials, however, say they saved as many trout fish as they could. A popular trout angling stream has suddenly disappeared in Kashmir after it was swallowed by a massive sinkhole. After the sudden death of a freshwater stream, around a 20 km long stretch of a famous trout stream in the Anantnag district has dried up. Locals fear for their safety as it appears the entire stream has been swallowed by the sinkhole. Efforts by the administration to divert water have not succeeded. "The river has disappeared. The government should do something. We are worried about drinking water and irrigation. Even our land can collapse. What's the guarantee our village is safe?" The sinkhole is believed to have been caused by the chemical dissolution of limestone rocks in the river. For locals, it's a mystery and some call it the wrath of nature as the freshwater stream running in the middle of mountains has literally disappeared. They are confused about where the water, draining into a sinkhole, is going. And, it may cause some disaster if the sinkhole is not fixed and Breng nullah (stream) is restored to its original course.

Feb. 17, 2022: Engineering Student Builds Solar Panels That Don't Need Direct Sunlight, Uses UV Light. Developed by Carvey Ehren Maigue, a student at Mapua University in the Philippines, the novel solar panels (called AuRES) are designed to feed off the UV rays of the sun -- something that even dense cloudy days cannot block.  For creating this, he used luminescent particles from fruit and vegetable waste. These are the same particles that absorb the sun's UV rays to turn them into visible light. The film thus converts the rays into visible light that’s used to generate electricity.  These solar panels are currently in the prototype stage and created in a 3-by-2-foot panel that’s installed on Maigue’s apartment window. It is able to generate enough electricity to charge two phones each day.

Now, scientists at JILA were able to measure time dilation at the smallest scale ever with help from the most accurate clocks on the planet. The group of scientists at JILA have managed to measure time dilation at a distance of just a millimetre. This small-scale achievement could help scientists understand the effects of time dilation over longer distances. On top of this, they were able to keep the atoms in a state of "quantum coherence" for 37 seconds, wherein their behaviour becomes predictable. What do you think about this small yet giant leap in conquering timespace?

Feb. 20, 2022: Instead, he spoke of what the stones, dating from 750 CE to 18th century CE, conjure of an ancient city that then included three districts: Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural and Ramanagara. There were a total of 1,500 stone inscriptions then. The stones talk of grants, lakes, tax waivers, governance practices, altruistic missions, battles, local kings, trade and commerce. Of these, the stone inscriptions honouring warriors are called Veerakallu or ‘hero stone’. The oldest, found in Krishnarajapuram, honoured a fallen warrior Mareya who fought for the Western Ganga dynasty ruler Sripurusha. Fascinating stories come from reading the inscriptions written in Kannada; the stones circa 750 CE were in Halmidi, the oldest form of Kannada. Wherever Kumar and the other volunteers have found an inscription stone, they've first tried to read the inscriptions - which are often destroyed or worn out - using methods like estampage (‘lifting’ the inscriptions from the stone on to a piece of paper for a clearer read), flour tracing, or Reflectance Transformation Imaging. “From the inscription stones it is evident that every nook and corner of the city has an incredible past, some going back to 2,000 years ago. Present author feels that Bangalore was occupied by Telugu speaking people, and most of the developments were taken by their effort.

Feb. 22, 2022: As per the study, the team of researchers applied resonant microwave electric fields to couple many states together and develop the technique to engineer the Rydberg state of ultracold strontium. Scientifically, the Rydberg state occurs when an electron in the atom is energetically moved to a higher excited state. This supersizes the orbit and increases the size of the atom by a thousand times. The Rice Quantum Initiative researchers coupled lattice-like Rydberg levels in a way that simulates aspects of real materials. They could do this by flexibly and precisely manipulating the electron motion. According to Phys.org, the Rydberg atoms are characterised by many regularly spaced quantum energy levels. These levels can be coupled by microwaves that enable the excited electron to move to a higher state. Researchers claim that the dynamics of this synthetic dimension are equivalent to a particle moving between lattice sites in a real crystal. The new finding will enable them to “set up interactions, the way particles move and capture all the important physics of a much more complicated system”.

Feb. 28, 2022: Scientists have managed to invent a quantum sensor that is being called an "Edison moment" with far-reaching implications for science. For the uninitiated, Thomas Alva Edison is credited for inventing many devices in various fields - especially the incandescent light bulb and one of the earliest motion picture cameras. The device is known as quantum gravity gradiometer and was unveiled in a new study in Nature. Developed by scientists at the University of Birmingham under contract with the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence, this marks the first time quantum sensing has been employed outside of a lab setting. Quantum-based sensors can assess underground structures more effectively and are low-cost. It could measure even the tiniest of changes in gravity fields for objects of various sizes and compositions that are underground - including human-made structures made centuries ago. Besides giving a peek at underground life on Earth, it could help predict natural disasters like volcanoes. What do you think about groundbreaking technology?

The Sun's outer layer boiled over recently and shot out a coronal mass ejection (CME) from its surface on January 29. The same had the effect of unleashing superfast solar winds and that brewed up a geomagnetic storm which slammed into Earth's atmosphere. It reached Earth by just February 3. This solar storm caused a radio blackout. That is exactly what it has done in Russia where the impact was the most severe.. The country is going through a long-lasting radio blackout since then. Apart from the destructive power, solar storms birth something else too - beautiful auroras in the extreme poles and that is what this one did too.

He had only presented a patriotic poem by Veer Savarkar on AIR once.""Hridaynath Ji had said in an interview that once he met Savarkar and told him about presenting his poem. Savarkar Ji had responded, do you want to go to jail by reciting my poem?` But Hridaynath Ji recited it and within eight days he was sacked from his services in the AIR. This is what their (Congress`) concept of freedom of expression was."
Feb. 10, 2022: Indian astronomers detect Earth-like habitable planets using new AI technology. India Today Web Desk  3 hours ago. A team of Indian astronomers have identified a few planets that exhibit similar characteristics as Earth using an Artificial Intelligence-based algorithm. Using Earth as an anomaly among thousands of planets that do not support life, astronomers have zeroed in on a new approach for identifying potentially habitable planets with a high probability. The AI-based method, named Multi-Stage Memetic Binary Tree Anomaly Identifier is based on the notion of a meme, which is an idea or knowledge that gets transferred from one person to another by imitation. Scientists said that memes indicate cross-cultural evolution in posterity and, therefore, can induce new learning mechanisms as generations pass.

Feb. 14, 2022: India successfully places its ‘eye in the sky’ satellite into orbit. At 5.59 a.m. Indian rocket Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle-C52 (PSLV-C52) blasted off from the first launch pad carrying three satellites including the earth observation satellite-04 (EOS-04) earlier named as RISAT-1A. The multiple satellite launch space mission lasted just over 18 minutes. The 44.4 metre tall PSLV-C52 weighing 321 ton slowly rose-up towards the skies with thick orange flame at its tail. The rocket gradually gained speed as it went up while emitting a rolling thunder sound. The satellite will play a strategic role in the nation’s defence with its capability to operate in day, night and in all weather conditions. The satellite has high data handling systems and high storage devices among other things. The satellite carries two scientific payloads to improve the understanding of ionosphere dynamics and the sun’s coronal heating process. The technology demonstrator satellite (INS-2TD) from ISRO, which is a precursor to India-Bhutan Joint Satellite (INS-2B) carries a thermal imaging camera to assess land/water surface temperature of wetlands/lakes, delineation of vegetation (crops/forests) and day/night thermal inertia. In a "marvellous accomplishment", Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has put earth observation satellite EOS-04 and two small satellites into orbit successfully.  India’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle PSLV-C52 injected Earth Observation Satellite EOS-04, into an intended sun synchronous polar orbit of 529 km altitude at 06:17 hours IST on February 14, 2022 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, SHAR, Sriharikota.

Feb. 15, 2022: The holes in biscuits are known as docker holes. You must have noticed them in a lot of sweet and salty biscuits as well as in cream-filled biscuits like Bourbon. These holes are associated with their manufacturing and design. The primary reason for the holes is that they allow air to pass through during baking, preventing them from swelling further. Here is how these holes are created-: Manufacturers first spread flour, sugar, and salt on a sheet-like tray which is then placed under a machine before the baking process. This machine then makes holes as desired in the dough. Biscuits cannot be made properly without these holes because if the dough gets filled with air, it will swell when heated in the oven. And then, the size of the biscuits will begin to expand. The presence of holes keeps a check on the size and gives a uniform shape to biscuits.
Feb. 15, 2022: Glimpses of Northern India’s Vanishing Nomads. For centuries, Kharnak nomads have raised livestock in one of the most hauntingly beautiful — and inhospitable — places on earth. Can their traditions outlast a generational exodus? This, he told me, was how he protects his flock from predators and convinces straggling goats to return — just one of the countless skills he has learned in the last 60 years that allow him to rear his animals in such an unforgiving landscape. Meanwhile, some 15,000 feet above sea level, I was simply trying to breathe. Here on the Changthang plateau, in a remote region of the Indian Himalayas, the altitude had left me lightheaded and gasping for air.
Feb. 15,  2022: For millennia, people across the globe have reported alarmed animal behaviour in the run-up to natural disasters. Could these signals be used to warn us of impending catastrophes? The earliest recorded reference to unusual animal behaviour prior to a natural disaster dates back to 373 BC, when the Greek historian Thucydides reported rats, dogs, snakes and weasels deserting the city of Helice in the days before a catastrophic earthquake. Other reports dot history. Minutes before the Naples quake of 1805, oxen, sheep, dogs and geese supposedly started making alarm calls in unison, while horses were said to have run off in panic just prior to the San Francisco earthquake of 1906.The researchers found evidence that the farm animals began to change their behaviour up to 20 hours before an earthquake.Crucially, Grant also found evidence of what might be triggering the changes in local animal behaviour, in the shape of a series of strong perturbations in local atmospheric electric charges every two to four minutes, starting two weeks before the earthquake. A particularly large fluctuation was recorded around eight days before the Contamana earthquake – coinciding with the start of the second stage of the animals disappearing from view. Scientists are now exploring whether these electromagnetic perturbations in the atmosphere prior to earthquakes could be a warning sign of impending quakes which animals may be sensing. Earthquakes are invariably preceded by a period when severe stresses arise in deep rock – stresses known to create electronic charges called "positive holes". These highly mobile electronic charge carriers can flow quickly from the crust to the Earth's surface, where they ionise air molecules above where they appear. Such ionisation has been noted prior to quakes across the globe. As these positive holes flow, they also generate ultra-low frequency electromagnetic waves, providing an additional signal that some animals may be able to pick up.

A dramatic drying in 2021 — about as dry as 2002 and one of the driest years ever recorded for the region — pushed the 22-year drought past the previous record-holder for megadroughts in the late 1500s and shows no signs of easing in the near future, according to a study Monday in the journal Nature Climate Change. The study calculated that 42% of this megadrought can be attributed to human-caused climate change.
