Botanists have discovered what could be the world's newest type of vegetation in the form of a lone, spear-shaped and nocturnal plant growing in Northern Tanzania, Citizen Tanzania reports. The new plant is currently being studied at the National Herbarium which operates inside the Tanzania Plant Health and Pesticides Authority (TPHPA) premises in Arusha. The TPHPA head of national herbarium, Dr Neduvoto Mollel, said the new plant seems to come alive at night when the leaves bloom under moonlight but as soon as the sun comes out, the plant goes with its leaves looking slightly weathered. "It is a very strange plant because its leaves expand and flourish during the night and contract at sunrise," Dr Mollel explained. But now, two astronomers are challenging that claim, finding that the evidence suggests something far stranger: possibly, a never-before-seen type of star made of invisible dark matter. Their research, which has yet to be peer-reviewed, was published April 18 on the preprint server arXiv. These kinds of bosons wouldn't carry forces, but they would still soak the universe. Most importantly, they would have the ability to form large clumps. Some of these clumps could be the size of entire star systems, but some could be much smaller. Algebra, square roots, concepts of time, architecture, the structure of the universe, metallurgy, even aviation were first found in the Vedas, travelled to Europe through Arab countries, and were subsequently posited as discoveries of scientists of the western world, S Somanath, the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) said on Wednesday. Somanath was speaking at the convocation of the Maharishi Panini Sanskrit and Vedic University in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. Panini is believed to be the person who wrote down the rules of Sanskrit grammar. The language’s syntax and structure make it ideal to “convey scientific thoughts and processes”, Somanath said. He added : “Engineers and scientists like Sanskrit a great deal. Its suits the language of computers and those learning artificial intelligence learn it. Lots of research is being done on how Sanskrit can be used for computation.” To be sure, much of this is still work in progress, although the narrative itself has become taller in the telling.

For the first time, more than half of India’s cultivated land now has access to assured irrigation led by an expansion in micro projects, which have higher water-use efficiency, official data for 2022-23 show. In 2022-23, of the 141 million hectares of gross sown area in the country, nearly 73 million hectares, or 52%, had irrigation access, up from 41% in 2016, according to updated data from Niti Aayog, the state-run think-tank.

The team showed that any material can be turned into a device that continuously harvests electricity from humidity in the air by peppering the material with nanopores less than 100 nanometers in diameter. "This is very exciting. We are opening up a wide door for harvesting clean electricity from thin air," Xiaomeng Liu, a graduate student in electrical and computer engineering at UMass Amherst's College of Engineering, said in a statement. The researchers said that the air contains an enormous amount of electricity and clouds, which are a mass of water droplets. Each of these droplets contains a charge, and when conditions are right, the cloud can produce a lightning bolt. What the team of engineers has done is they have created a human-built, small-scale cloud that produces electricity.

Sadhvidya Pratishtanam ( SVP), a 54 year old institute working to spread the classical language, has started Samskrita Sambhashanashala, its fifth online series on teaching spoken Sanskrit. SVP, founded by eminent Sanskrit scholar, the late Prof Padamnabha Sharma, aims to teach Sanskrit to as many as 5,000 people by 2027, a release from the institute said. The session was inaugurated by former senior bureaucrat CV Gopinath who is also the patron emeritus of SVP.

Unfazed by the prevailing ethnic violence in Manipur, more than 3,300 candidates on Sunday appeared for the UPSC preliminary examinations at 12 sub-centers in Imphal, which was the only main centre for the coveted exam in the trouble-torn northeastern state. Sources said 4,051 candidates had registered for UPSC prelims in Imphal but after UPSC provided them an alternative to choose from exam centers in a few other states, about 700 opted to appear from outside Manipur. The UPSC, after reviewing the situation in Manipur and consulting the state government, had given candidates registered at the Imphal centre the option to choose from centers at Aizawl, Kohima, Shillong, Dispur, Jorhat, Kolkata and Delhi. For better internet connectivity and safety issues, many of the candidates went to centres in neighboring Assam and Meghalaya.

The Japanese company that makes equipment ranging from blood pressure monitors to industrial switches will be the latest global company to enter Tamil Nadu that saw a spate of investments recently, including Hyundai Motor, Nike shoemaker Pou Chen, and Ola Electric.

A team of researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass) were able to “harvest” electricity from the air using a special material that they developed. With the study, whose results are published in the journal Advanced Materials, the researchers have proven that nearly any material can be turned into a device that continuously harvests electricity from humidity in the air, according to UMass. The trick is that the material will need to have “nanopores” which have a diameter of less than 100 nanometres in diameter. “The air contains an enormous amount of electricity. Think of a cloud, which is nothing more than a mass of water droplets. Each of those droplets contains a charge, and when conditions are right, the cloud can produce a lightning bolt—but we don’t know how to reliably capture electricity from lightning,” said Jun Yao, corresponding author of the research article.
