May. 23, 2023: Archaeologists discover ancient Mayan game – here’s what it can teach modern educators. Published: May 17, 2023 12.22pm BST. The Mayan civilisation – which flourished in central America from BCE 2000 to 1500 AD – had several popular games. These games were thought to have the supernatural power to predict war. They include a cross-shaped board game called Patolli and a ball game called Pok-a-Tok. Recently, a stone scoreboard was found by archaeologists in Chichén Itzá, Mexico’s Yucatán peninsula. The Mayan people appeared to have used it to play a ritualistic game with a heavy ball. This game held significant cultural and religious importance for the Mayan civilisation. More than a simple recreational activity, it reflected the deep-rooted beliefs and values of the Mayan people. For Mayans, games provided a platform for the expression of physical abilities, the establishment of social order and the connection between the mortal and the divine. The game discovered in Chichén Itzá symbolises the delicate balance between light and darkness, embodying a cosmic struggle. Like other Mayan games, it was believed to influence the fate of harvests, the climate, communities and individuals. May. 23, 2023:World's Newest Plant With Strange Behavior Discovered in Tanzania. Botanists have discovered what could be the world's newest type of vegetation in the form of a lone, spear-shaped and nocturnal plant growing in Northern Tanzania, Citizen Tanzania reports. The new plant is currently being studied at the National Herbarium which operates inside the Tanzania Plant Health and Pesticides Authority (TPHPA) premises in Arusha. The TPHPA head of national herbarium, Dr Neduvoto Mollel, said the new plant seems to come alive at night when the leaves bloom under moonlight but as soon as the sun comes out, the plant goes with its leaves looking slightly weathered. "It is a very strange plant because its leaves expand and flourish during the night and contract at sunrise," Dr Mollel explained. The plant was discovered by American Botanist Barry Yinger and his Tanzanian associate Robert Sikawa. The National Herbarium in which the new plant is being kept and observed, located at Ngaramtoni in the outskirts of Arusha city, holds a collection of preserved plant specimens and associated data used for scientific study and identification.

May. 24, 2023: 5 things that happen to your body when mercury climbs above 45 degrees. Parmita Uniyal, New Delhi • Yesterday 8:59 pm. The killer heatwaves have left many parts of north India sizzling hot in the past few days. With temperature moving past 45 degrees, it's becoming challenging for the body to adjust to the extreme weather condition. To cope up with the extreme heat, our body activates its in-built cooling system of sweating, the heart beats faster, and blood vessels expand allowing more blood to flow through them. The body can also become susceptible to heat exhaustion and heat stress which could cause symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, nausea, and muscle cramps. In rare cases, extreme heat can result in multiple organ failure.

May. 24. 2023: Strange star system may hold first evidence of an ultra-rare 'dark matter star'. Paul Sutter published about 21 hours ago. In a distant star system, a sunlike star orbits an invisible object that may be the first example of a 'boson star' made of dark matter, new research suggests. But now, two astronomers are challenging that claim, finding that the evidence suggests something far stranger: possibly, a never-before-seen type of star made of invisible dark matter. Their research, which has yet to be peer-reviewed, was published April 18 on the preprint server arXiv. These kinds of bosons wouldn't carry forces, but they would still soak the universe. Most importantly, they would have the ability to form large clumps. Some of these clumps could be the size of entire star systems, but some could be much smaller. The smallest clumps of bosonic dark matter could be as small as stars, and these hypothetical objects get a new name: boson stars.

May. 25, 2023: The evidence for the existence of automata is far more credible than other claims made about pre-modern Indian technology, such as UFOs, mercury-powered aeroplanes, and genetic engineering. We can guess that medieval Indians had automata because multiple courts with whom they interacted also possessed them, and they are well-attested by credible travellers. These devices were not the sleek, Bluetooth-operated cleaning or assembly bots that we are accustomed to today. Instead, they were powered by water and clockwork, both of which humans have been using for centuries in watermills, windmills, fountains and similar structures.

He added : “Engineers and scientists like Sanskrit a great deal. Its suits the language of computers and those learning artificial intelligence learn it. Lots of research is being done on how Sanskrit can be used for computation.” To be sure, much of this is still work in progress, although the narrative itself has become taller in the telling.

May. 31, 2023:New technology can generate electricity from humidity in air. Story by Science Desk • 4h ago. A team of researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass) were able to “harvest” electricity from the air using a special material that they developed. With the study, whose results are published in the journal Advanced Materials, the researchers have proven that nearly any material can be turned into a device that continuously harvests electricity from humidity in the air, according to UMass. The trick is that the material will need to have “nanopores” which have a diameter of less than 100 nanometres in diameter. “The air contains an enormous amount of electricity. Think of a cloud, which is nothing more than a mass of water droplets. Each of those droplets contains a charge, and when conditions are right, the cloud can produce a lightning bolt—but we don’t know how to reliably capture electricity from lightning,” said Jun Yao, corresponding author of the research article.
