June 23, 2022:  A garage-sized reactor could provide limitless energy with magnet-free technology. Could it be the answer to our fossil fuel addiction? By Chris Young .  Zap Energy has developed a different approach with its Z-pinch technology. The company uses an electromagnetic field instead of the expensive magnetic coils and shielding materials used in tokamaks. This, they say, pins the plasma inside a relatively small space and "pinches" it until it becomes hot and dense enough for the required reaction to take place. One of the authors of that study, Uri Shumlak, co-founded Zap Energy in 2017 in a bid to leverage the sheared axial flow technique to make Z-pinch technology commercially viable. Just last week, Zap Energy reached a key milestone by creating the first plasmas inside its prototype reactor, called the FuZE-Q. The Zap Energy team also just closed a $160-million Series C funding round, which will help it to further develop its Z-pinch technology and hopefully bring it to the market.

Spinning an ancient yarn: Inside the struggle to recreate Dhaka muslin. Natasha Rego - Yesterday 2:17 pm. The fabric, popular all the way from the 2nd century BCE to the 18th century CE, is the stuff of legend: A fabric woven so fine that it was translucent, with a thread count so high that a six-yard sari could pass through a wedding ring. The cotton plant it was made from is now extinct. The strain of bamboo used in the loom is extinct too. The finest weavers today say they wouldn’t know where to begin trying to replicate it. But pieces of original Dhaka muslin still exist, proof that this was once possible. Popular among Greek aristocracy and Mughal royalty; worn by the 18th-century French royal Marie Antoinette and the French empress Joséphine Bonaparte; written about by Jane Austen and Leo Tolstoy; described as “woven air”, production ceased sometime in the late 19th century, as colonial Britain crushed India’s once-thriving weaver communities. Now, an effort has begun to revive it. And while they’re still only at a thread count of 400 (up from an average of 60 to 80 for handwoven cotton saris but still nowhere near the fabled 1,200 of the finest Dhaka muslin), a small first batch of saris has been made.

Somnath and Gyanvapi temples were rebuilt – long ago by Maratha queen Ahilyabai Holkar. Vandana Menon - Yesterday 10:26 am. Indore’s Rani Ahilyabai Holkar took on the task of temple rebuilding in Somnath and Varanasi. Visitors to these temples encounter her role even today – in the tales told by local people, priests and tour guides. But the temple only exists today because the 18th-century queen took on the task of reconstructing it. The call to do so came to Ahilyabai in a dream, according to Rajendra Tiwari, whose family comes from a long line of mahants at the Kashi Vishwanath temple. Local legends also say that Ahilyabai’s eyes turned white with shock when she saw the Somnath Temple’s dilapidated condition — driving her to install an idol underground in a secret shrine, where it could stay untouched.

Jun. 26, 2022: ASI finds copper figures and weapons dating back 3,800 years in UP’s Mainpuri. Shikha Salaria - Yesterday 7:50 pm. The copper hoards were chanced upon by a local farmer on 10 June and are 77 in number, possibly dating back to 1600-2000 BC — the later stages of the Chalcolithic Age (the transition period between Neolithic and Bronze Ages)  Copper hoards are antiquities made of mostly copper and other constituents dated to the first half of the 2nd millennium BCE and since the early 19th century they have earlier been discovered in the Yamuna-Ganges, the area of land where the two rivers meet. The discovery suggests that the inhabitants of the area were engaged in fighting, much like the 2018 findings in Sanauli in Baghpat, although that was a burial site, Vasant Swarnkar, ASI’s director of conservation and spokesperson, told ThePrint.   “Similar discoveries are heavy and can’t easily be handled. The marks on them suggest that they were possibly used for the clash of metal with metal,” he said. “So far, the three kinds of implements that have been recovered here include antenna swords, harpoons, and anthropological figures.” The find will undergo Thermoluminescence dating — a dating technique usually used on pottery and other ceramic material — he said.  “…But the discoveries made at the Atranji Khera site in Etah (1983)— which is the nearest to this place — have been found to be dating to 1600-2000 BC. Hence, the relative dating of these discoveries suggests that they may be from the same period,”

Jun. 27, 2022: Woman Escapes Death as Giant Coconut Falls on Her While Riding Two-wheeler. Buzz Staff - 2h ago. In a bone-chilling incident, a woman riding pillion on a two-wheeler cheated death. This was quite evident in a recent video doing the rounds on social media that is coming from Jalan Teluk Kumbar, Malaysia. The video shows a pillion rider being struck with a giant coconut on her helmet. Soon after the coconut fell on the pillion rider’s head, she fell from the two-wheeler onto the road. The footage recorded through a dashcam of a car that was behind the scooter shows how the traffic around the two-wheeler was immediately halted by the onlookers. The giant coconut that fell on Gani’s mother left her with a fractured right shoulder, left hand, and two ribs. The video was also shared on Reddit where a viewer commented, “In Hawaii they constantly cut the coconuts off the trees in public areas so this won’t happen.” Another comment on the post read, “It’s true! It’s a real, documented hazard. I’m glad that person was wearing a helmet that could be the difference in concussion vs straight up death by it.” A viewer who lived on a tropical island of Samoa commented on Reddit, “Lived in Samoa for three years and everyone would warn you if you were standing under coconuts, there was serious concern in the community especially for outsiders.”

June 29, 2022: This tiny glass pyramid could make solar panels cheaper than ever. This removes the need for solar tracking. By Ameya Paleja. A university press release said that researchers at Stanford University had developed a new optical concentrator that can channel even diffused light onto a fixed position, thereby increasing the power generation capacity of solar panels. The device is called Axially Graded Index Lens (AGILE) but looks nothing more spectacular than a glass pyramid in an inverted position. "It’s a completely passive system – it doesn’t need energy to track the source or have any moving parts," said Vaidya in the press release. "Without optical focus that moves positions or the need for tracking systems, concentrating light becomes much simpler. "Working with her doctoral supervisor, Olav Solgaard, Vaidya theorized that an engineered material with a smoothly increased refractive index could bend incoming light and direct it to a single point. The refractive index is a measurement of how quickly light travels through a material. In Vaidya's theorized device, the light would hardly bend at the surface, but as it traveled through, the device would bend till it became almost vertical. The press release said that Vaidya's previous work with 3D printing came in handy when she had fabricated polymeric lenses with nanometer-scale roughness. Using new fabrication techniques, the researchers were able to 3D print AGILE using commercially available polymers and glasses. The press release said that Vaidya's previous work with 3D printing came in handy when she had fabricated polymeric lenses with nanometer-scale roughness. Using new fabrication techniques, the researchers were able to 3D print AGILE using commercially available polymers and glasses.  In the prototypes built and tested, the researchers captured 90 percent of the light that hit the AGILE surface and created spots that were three times brighter than the incident light. The lens also works with a broad spectrum of light ranging from ultraviolet to infrared, as well as light diffused due to changes in the weather or atmospheric conditions. A layer of AGILE installed on top of solar panels could not only help in the removal of protective layers that are currently used but also create space for cooling and circuits between the inverted pyramids, the press release added. With the surface area needed for power generation reduced, the solar panels could become smaller, reducing production costs.  Solar panels just got even more exciting.

JUNE 13, 2022:  Collapsing a leading theory for the quantum origin of consciousness. by Foundational Questions Institute. The origin of consciousness is one of the greatest mysteries of science. attributes consciousness to quantum computations in the brain. This in turn hinges on the notion that gravity could play a role in how quantum effects disappear, or "collapse." But a series of experiments in a lab deep under the Gran Sasso mountains, in Italy, has failed to find evidence in support of a gravity-related quantum collapse model, undermining the feasibility of this explanation for consciousness. The result is reported in the journal Physics of Life Reviews. "How consciousness arises in the brain is a huge puzzle," says Catalina Curceanu, a member of the physics think tank, the Foundational Questions Institute, FQXi, and the lead physicist on the experiments at INFN in Frascati, Italy. "There are many competing ideas, but very few can be experimentally tested." Consciousness is not usually associated with quantum properties because quantum effects are fragile and difficult to maintain even under highly-controlled conditions and cold temperatures in the lab. So it had long been assumed that the brain's warm and wet environment would be too disruptive to allow quantum effects to survive. But Penrose explained that he and Hammeroff have identified tiny structures called microtubules within neurons in the brain that could potentially sustain quantum effects for short periods—just long enough to carry out quantum computations. Orch OR theory attributes consciousness to quantum computations orchestrated ("Orch") by electrical oscillations in these microtubules.
