DETAILS:
June. 16, 2021, 17:22 IST: Cabinet approves Deep Ocean Mission to tap vast marine living and non-living resources. The Mission will help India to explore and mine strategic polymetallic nodules such as Copper, Nickel, Cobalt and Manganese in 75,000 sq. km of area in the central Indian Ocean Basin, and put the country in the category of a select group of nations, including the US, China, Japan, Germany and Canada, in conducting oceanographic research in the deep sea. The Mission has been allocated Rs 4,077 crore for a period of five years. It’ll be implemented in a phased manner by the ministry of earth sciences (MoES) through multiple institutions such as ISRO, BARC, CSIR, DRDO, Department of biotechnology and others. The estimated cost for the first phase of the Mission for the three years (2021-2024) will be Rs 2,823 crore.
June. 16, 2021: On Wednesday evening GVMC 44 ward in Srinivasanagar, on the terrace a lightning bolt struck the water tank due to the sudden rain in the evening, though no winds etc the thunders and lightning happened. When the rain was intense, a BJP person's house on the terrace the water tank was hit by the lightning bolt, so the water tank broke down all the water got run off and wasted. And the two storied building faced damage to the TVs, Tubelights, Frizes, AC burnt and Electric supply got stranded and everywhere the darkness has engulfed. I have previously published that a lightning bolt fell in the drum of water but it went straight into ground since the tank was kept on the floor. In Kolhapur I have observed a similar bolt of lightning that rolled down the hill and merged with the flowing water drain. Obviously, this time in Srinivasanagar the tank got destroyed by the lightning bolt but since it is on the top of terrace , the lightning bolt travelled along the live electric wires and destroyed all the gadgets in the two storied building. In Maharanipeta, the evening with winds and gales troubled people around 3PM afternoon and intense gales and rain occurred at 5PM and it rained moderatly with thunder and bolts. People felt happy that the weather became cool.

June 15, 2021 20:45 IST: UPDATED: JUNE 15, 2021 20:45 IST: 78,000 tonnes of FCI rice to be used for ethanol production this year. Food Secretary, however, emphasises that maize will form the primary feedstock for grain-based ethanol production instead, at a subsidised rate of ₹20 a kg. “If you see the world over too, of the 10,000 crore litres of ethanol produced annually, around 73 per cent comes from maize and a very small proportion is from rice. In India too, surplus rice from FCI will only be used to ensure that 100 crore liters of capacity coming up for grain based distilleries don’t fall short of feedstock while maize production picks up to feed these plants,” food secretary Sudhanshu Pandey told reporters. He was responding to a question on whether the FCI selling surplus rice at Rs 2,000 per quintal for making ethanol is reasonable while it sells the same rice at higher price for open market operations and also on who bears the subsidy for such cheap sale. The subsidy will be incurred as the economic cost of FCI rice for 2020-21 is estimated to be around Rs 30 per kg while the same will be sold to grain-based distilleries at Rs 20 per kg as per the new policy.

It falls on the full moon day. Agriculturists worship the yoke, the plough and the bulls with turmeric and kumkum. This is a special festival celebrated mainly by the farmers and agriculturists. Agriculturists worship the yoke, the plough and the bulls with turmeric and kumkum.  Coconuts are broken either at home or in the field,  in-front of  the yokes and bulls. They inaugurate the annual cultivation by ploughing five or nine rounds in their fields on this day, as it is supposed to be an auspicious day auguring fresh showers.  They also cook payasam, a small dish and enjoy it with their children and relatives.  In some parts of the country cultivators worship the bullock.  They wash the cattle, smear and decorate the hooves and horns with oil and a variety of colours and feed them with pulagam (rice, green gram dal and sesame cooked together).  The bodies are also decorated  gaily with coloured circles and designs.  Little bells are tied to their horns and necks and they are driven out into the open space to wander and run about.  The tillers take home a part of the festoon that is tied to the village gate, after the cattle pass under it as a talisman for the ensuring year. Children collect seeds a week in advance and sow them in the corners of the temple.  By the festival day, the young plants sprout and a few of these tender plants are taken home by the tillers and kept in their granaries for a prosperous crop during the coming year.  The gaily dressed people and the colourfully decorated cattle make the village a grand spectacle of colour and pageantry.

Nature Communications, scientists claim that they have found clues to why the eruptions in Indonesia are so explosive. According to them, the explosiveness of a volcano depends upon the nature and compositions of its magma, a hot, dense and fluid or semi-fluid material in the mantle, just below the earth’s crust.Scientists used ultramodern mass spectrometers to examine the mineral crystals in the lava to study their composition. “When the magma reacts with, for instance, the limestone that’s found in central Java right under the volcano, it becomes full to bursting point with carbon dioxide and water, and the eruptions get more explosive.”

June. 02, 2021: The small hole in the arm was spotted May 12. Robotic operators noticed a hole in the station's Canadarm2 provided by the Canadian Space Agency,  which has been in service in orbit since 2001, during a routine inspection on May 12, the CSA officials said in a blog post Friday (May 28). Officials called the hole a "lucky strike" given the relatively small size of the arm, which is 57.7 feet (17.6 meters) long and has a diameter of just 14 inches (35 cm). The team drilled 200-meter long core samples during a two-month research tour on a converted oil-drilling ship, the JOIDES Resolution. The samples provided an in-depth analysis of monsoon rainfall. Scientists analysed the fossils of plankton embedded in the sample that had died over hundreds of years as monsoon rains put more freshwater into the bay, reducing the salinity at the surface.

Fig.11 The Coffee Tree in Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
The species has been named Pyrostria laljii after Lal Ji Singh, Joint Director and Head of Office, Andaman and Nicobar Regional Centre, Botanical Survey of India. “While the genus Pyrostria is not found in India, there are several genera from the family Rubiaceae that are common in India. These plants, including cinchona, coffee, adina, hamelia, ixora, galium, gardenia, mussaenda, rubia, morinda, have high potential for economic value. More studies should be carried out to ascertain whether Pyrostria laljii could have some economic value,” Dr. Singh said. Other physical features that distinguish the tree from other species of the genus is its umbellate inflorescence with 8-12 flowers. The colour of the flowers varies from white to cream, and turns brown after pollination. The fruit drupes of the tree are obovoid or subglobose, green to yellow or white, when mature turning pale yellow to brown. Mr. Naik pointed out that the discovery is unique as the species is a big tree and yet had not been recorded as a new species. The other places are Tirur forest near the Jarawa reserve forest and the Chidia Tapu, Munda Pahar, forest. (Published in Journal of Annales Botanici Fennici''')
