ABSTRACT

This article contains TWO PARTS of some rare personal home documents of Professor Kotcherlakota Rangadhama Rao D.Sc. (Madras) D.Sc. (London) personal life, preserved by him one written in English and the other, in a chain (golusu kattu) connected Telugu language. The English version presents details of effort and easy to read while the Telugu write up is extremely difficult to read. Author’s attempt to read it and decipher the contents was in vain.

After return from UK, with a tremendous welcome gesture by Indians at Adayar Sea port of Theosophy Lodge, in 1931 by Continental Ship, he traveled to Visakhapatnam to meet his wife and dear children. The tragic loss of his father, and subsequent turmoil at home with cousins and others totally disappointed and troubled him visibly he left for Kodaikanal with his wife and children for relaxation of family delight and enjoyment.

This certainly helped his family to regain their crippled thoughts with the mishaps in the big family of Kotcherlakotas with the loss, due to a paralytic stroke, of the father figure Mr. K. V. N. Rao, the Post Master and a painstaking bulky old printers machinery, from Germany, as a owner in  Visakhapatnam (dwindled with demise of him in 1930), Berhampur (still working totally modified by youngsters of their livelihood in 2013) and Srikakulum (still working in 2013) etc places in 1930 to provide job works to youngsters and helpers.

“I think the coed at kodaikanal is very secure. I am to hear that you intend to remain at Kodaikonal for 2 months and then come to ……….there till you get a job. Why do you do that-  if it is not convenient you please send Chittipilla and children to me after you return from Kodaikanal or earlier if you like - & request you also to go here for a few months it will be possible for you to stay anywhere after you get a job. You will certainly get it in the near future. You don’t be anxious about that – I hear that Venkappa has become a tremendous fellow now. So please send them to me as early as possible. We are all doing well. Hope yourself and children are doing well.” ” signed

Salient effort

After return from UK with a D.Sc. (London) Prof. K. R. Rao remained jobless nearly nine months in 1931-32 till by his struggling effort with Jeypore Vikram Deva, Andhra University was created at Waltair and he was the first appointee. He made salient efforts to convince successfully, the Raja of Jeypore, a resident of Visakhapatnam, to initiate a building of Science & Technology in Waltair, the place of Andhra University. He was successful and a grant of those days, one lakh rupees was given magnanimity of the Maharaja. The building was built by a relative of Prof K R Rao (details given in a book on Prof K R Rao by the present author in Telugu). It was a place of dense forest area in those days where people dreaded to walk even during day time from 11AM to 3PM. The relative of Prof K R Rao, was a milk vendor travelling on a motor bike, selling milk to distant places.  But suddenly the builder fell down in valley at, Siripuram junction steep turn and died instantly, but the “venturous life of the Emancipated Soul” reached and left a message of his demise due to the fall, to his wife “with a great astounding reverberation of her body and mind”  at the town of Visakhapatnam. When people went there to Siripuram Junction valley they found the dead body. (Now the place is occupied by a big Petrol Bunk to assist many motor vehicles 2013)

Things were OK hardly for nine months, when Prof K R Rao first built a power DC generator, the first instrument, in Andhra University in 1932.

He was instrumental in the initiation and starting of the Faculty Club of Andhra University, Waltair. (see the photo enclosed).

Problems at AU in the Early Academic Life of Prof K R Rao

Then problems started unfolding with Vice-Chancellor “Sir” C R Reddi. I shall be failing not to state that “Sir” Dr. Sarvepalli R, “Sir” C. V. Raman as an expert member of Physics and as the Vice-Chancellor “Sir” C R Reddi joined hands forming as committee of expert members mutually. This expert committee, disallowed Prof K R Rao and appointed a junior of 12 years younger as the Head and Reader of the Department, who holds only an Honorary Doctorate given at the blessings of “Sir” C. V. Raman. Such was the total submission for petty benefits from foreign rulers of India.

The associate of Prof K R Rao in London Shri Badami whose thesis was revalued and resubmitted again for the award of Ph. D thesis under Prof. A. Fowler by virtue of Prof. K R Rao corrections, when he heard of this deep story was dismayed of the callous behavior of the “Nobel Prize Winner of India”.
J S Badami letters to Dr K R Rao from London and Berlin
A hand written note by J S Badami to Prof K R Rao wonder struck the Nobel Prize winner’s jealousy for a fellow Physicist and intention of suppressing him ruthlessly.
See the original letter of Badami below
“Probably by the time this reaches you
your job question might have been solved, as
you write. I hope it has been favourable.
I was never prepared to learn what you
wrote regarding Prof R. I thought  he might
even be of positive value to you considering
you were the first informant of the great
good luck, any way –is to wish him
still more. I only wish our great men were
great in their goodness too.-----------
I am glad you have been able to
have a v.Spect. of your own. I have asked”

REMARK: This fixes the date of Prof R antagonism against Prof K Rangadhama Rao D.Sc(Madras) D.Sc.(London) as prior to 26th Feb 1932. Prof KRRao met “Sir” CV Raman in 1924 accidentally at Jadavapur Cultivation of Science, while going to Prof. M. N. Saha at Allahabad to discuss his results in Spectroscopy, for the final version of his D.Sc. Thesis. Incidentally his Doctoral Thesis of Madras University 1919-1924, consists of a Infra Red observations. (See my publications on his works) While Prof R’s paper was communicated, only after four years of effort, with the help of a Chemist KSKrishnan, to Nature on 28th Feb 1928. Prof R fought to see that Prof KRRao has been put at very low position in the (New) Andhra University at Waltair during 1932, while Prof MNSaha recommended him for Professorship but was appointed only as a lecturer. Prof A Fowler’s support to Prof Dr K Rangadhama Rao seems entirely dubious while enjoying full faith and benefits of the analysis of line spectra and support to correct his students works he has only half-heartedly recommended him, only appreciating his research creative talent. Prof K Rangadhama Rao has no knight-hood of “SIR” to empower and cover him in the Lord’s Academic circles. This is so, inspite Manne Siegbahn (in 1930) found Prof Dr KRRao’s uncanny and extraordinary scientific value and worth.

   Physics Department,

                                                      26.4.32.
Dear Dr.Rao,

Regarding your letter as well as the paper
you sent. I am indeed very glad to learn that you have
received an appointment though personally i think that
they ought to have given you the post of Reader.
I have been informed of the whole inner history and I am indeed glad to learn that my efforts have been of some service to you.
I hope that you and your colleagues will be able to create
a centre of Research at Waltair.

Eminent persons in our country as I have found
very often to my cost, have the mentality of the proverbial
Cock in the basket, which tries to pack out all young intruders.
Life is still before you, and you must be prepared for more experiences of this kind. But one who works conscientiously need not be afraid of anything.

I am returning your paper with my comments.
                                                     Yours sincerely,

 =========================
“Sir” C. V. Raman love-married a Punjabi Lady shows his magnanimity in social life and opportunism of Modernity.

Obvious deep interest of both “Sir” Sarvepalli R and “Sir” C. R. Reddi was to get a dreamed Nobel Prize through recommendation of “Sir” C. V. Raman.

The cunning “Sir” C. V. Raman has other interests to build up, by hook or crook a “Physics Empire” of his own. The opportunity immediately provided itself to him of, as an expert member of Physics Faculty at Andhra University, a blessing in disguise.

“Sir” Sarvepalli R and “Sir” C R Reddi (the enigmatic duo)

Failure of “Sir” Sarvepalli R to get the due recommendation from “Sir” C. V. Raman for the cause of a Nobel Prize has made him to open his eyes. When he became the Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University, he immediately sanctioned Rs.10,000/- to the learned Prof. K. R. Rao D.Sc.(London) D.Sc. (Madras) for his research pursuits and as a remedial measure for his misdeeds.

Also “Sir” C. R. Reddi, when second time became Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University, he took the help of Prof. K. R. Rao literally to build the Andhra University. For this purpose he lived from 1944 to 1947 in the “Narasimha Ashram” the residential accommodation of Prof. K. R. Rao, at Official Colony, Maharanipeta and daily used to discuss with him and write the official notes for the running of the Andhra University administration. Vice-Chancellor’s office was located downstairs at “Narasimha Ashram”. Unfortunately the downstairs, underground room on the left portion, Vice-Chancellor’s office of his own of Andhra University, was burnt by people of his opposition and dissent.

And when he left the residence “Narasimha Ashram” he was extremely careful to personally destroy all written material provided by Prof. K. R. Rao. He spent nearly three days in closed doors to destroy all the correspondence, suggestions and important documents pertaining to the establishment of Andhra University. He point-blank told Prof K R Rao that many papers of their mutual concern and valuable discussions have been annihilated. No wonder “Sir” C. R. Reddi wanted to have his name only known to the world, as the architect of the Administration of the Andhra University.

Bobji the fourth Son of Prof K. R. Rao

Present author Dr. K. Lakshmi Narayana was seven years old, when the house “Narasimha Ashram” could be secured by Prof K. R. Rao family, once again after the year 1948 (vacated by Dr. C. R. Reddi), celebrated the festival of Bogipallu with fruits poured over the head of the young child (Dr. K.L.N) known as Bobji at home by his mother along with several females who gathered to pick up the coins falling down on his head.

Prof K R Rao became a Professor of Physics at Andhra University, Waltair only in 1938 and followed the birth of his son Bobji (Dr. K. Lakshmi Narayana) in 1940.

Prof. A. Fowler

It is unfortunate that Prof Fowler who is not a “Lord” of England, but only a demonstrator cum mechanic of a Physics Laboratory in Imperial College, London was eventually planned to shift his research work to India along with his student disciples. He was totally dependent on Prof K. R. Rao for his research guidance and getting approved Doctorate Degrees. Prof. A. Fowler died in 1942 while crossing a railway line in London due to German bombing in the World War.

Prof K R Rao was most powerful academically and helpful to guide other students for their Ph. D and D. Sc degrees. The plan of establishing a Center of Physics, by British authority in India at the new University Andhra, under the guidance and magnanimity of Prof K R Rao was a pre-calculated affair, since Prof A Fowler wanted to guide students from India and planned the Andhra University as his formidable base.

FAMILY TREE

Family Tree was drawn by Prof. K R Rao in 1972 at the insistence of Dr. Ramaleela his eldest daughter, after the demise of Mrs. K. Peramma Garu on 31 December 1971 around 10A. M.

Family Tree of Prof K R Rao depicting his wife's relationship with him prior to his marriage

This family tree depicted by Prof K R Rao, after the demise of Mrs K Peramma on 31 December 1971 asserting the relationship of Prof K R Rao with Mrs. Peramma, a very enigmatic, young, rasping, docile and dynamic girl of Visakhapatnam whom Prof K R Rao married at the age of 19 years with the marriage performed in Godevari Street of Visakhapatnam for about five days, at Vaddadi residence, a tradition of ancient India in 1920. It was possible since Vaddadi Krishna Rao an advocate of Visakhapatnam and especially in Chodavaram, was a rich advocate and within few years, he died suddenly since his wealth was all stolen by thieves in Chodavaram.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT

Author has been effectively moved visibly by the incidents narrated and presented in the article. My life has been totally shaped by Late Prof K. R. Rao, D.Sc. (Madras) D.Sc.(London) since my childhood up to my Doctorate Degree in Physics. His enemies didn’t spare me in both Mathematical Physics and Nuclear Physics M.Sc. Courses and exercised revengeful attitude.
