Peculiarity of this season’s thunderstorms is the heating in north and north-western India that has coincided with the movement of Western Disturbances (extratropical storms originating in the Mediterranean region), which is the main system of bringing rain in non-monsoon period in north India.
May 18, 2018: The western disturbance draws moisture from the Arabian Sea and this moisture incursion leads to intense thunderstorm activity. For instance, we had three such cases one after the other in a sequence. First event was on May 1-2, then May 7-8, followed by May 13-14. May 20, 2018 5:51:26 am: PUNE: A start-up project that aims to resolve solid waste issues, provide alternate livelihood to wastepickers. Pune generates around 1,000-1,200 tonner of garbage, of which around 60 per cent is wet waste. Majority of the wet waste is being treated at the decentralised waste disposal facilities. ‘Vaayu’, a brainchild of mechanical engineer-turned-entrepreneur Priyadarshan Sahasrabuddhe, will use a special bacterial solution that will ‘digest’ organic (wet) waste and turn it into biogas. The process of ‘digestion’ happens in a large tank and the gas is collected in a specially-designed balloon from where it can be directly connected to a gas oven, to be used as a fuel. The process also generates a liquid slurry, which, the entrepreneur says, can be used as a fertiliser. The setup has the capacity of digesting 2kgs wet waste per day can generate cooking gas enough for 40 minutes of cooking daily on a home burner.

May 20, 2018 15:14: A dying star part of a twin star system in the middle of the Ant Nebula has been ejecting lasers into the universe and to beams are coming at Earth. Two beams of laser light are coming at Earth from the massive Ant Nebula and this could mean that there might be a double star system hiding within the cluster. A blast of laser like this normally comes from a dying star, reports the ESA. The laser was reportedly first spotted by European Space Agency's (ESA) Herschel space observatory. This effect, explains the report, is explained as a result of smaller stars, much like the Sun shedding gasses and dust from their outer layers into space as they begin to die and start transforming into dense, white dwarf stars.

A unique telescope launched in South Africa combines 'eyes and ears' to study the universe. Scientists in South Africa on 25 May launched the world’s first optical telescope linked to a radio telescope, combining “eyes and ears” to try to unravel the secrets of the universe. The device forms part of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project in the remote Karoo desert, which will be the world’s most powerful radio telescope system. The latest move combines the new optical telescope MeerLITCH, Dutch for ‘more light’, with the recently-completed 64-dish MeerKAT radio telescope, located 200 kilometres away.We are listening and looking at the sky at the same time, that is a completely novel concept in astronomy worldwide. This is the eye, with the MeerKAT being the ears as a radio telescope. It is fantastic to see what amazing views it produces. The optical telescope, built in the Netherlands and shipped to South Africa, uses a main mirror just 65 cm in diameter and a single 100 megapixel detector measuring 10 cm x 10 cm. MeerLICHT boasts of a huge field of view that allows astronomers to see an area 13 times the size of the full moon in exquisite detail, and pick up objects one million times fainter than is possible with the human eye. The brilliant thing is that we are tracking at the same time with the two telescopes, so as soon as we see something in the radio we can look back in time. Flashes of radio emission known as Fast Radio Bursts may now be ‘caught in the act’. Hopefully we can finally determine the origin of these enigmatic flashes.

May 27, 2018: The Hindu, S&T: Paper coated with nickel nanoparticles, based electrodes show superior water-splitting efficiency, scientists at Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Chemical Sciences, Kolkata have found. The electrolyte used was Hydrogen peroxide. For more than 10 days continues operation, at 1M(pH 14) and at least 12 hours at 10M concentration. Cotton cloth can also be used as it has similar structural characteristics like paper. High porosity of paper is responsible for high efficiency. Atharva Sahsradudhe, senior author of paper in Nature Communications. Nickel coated paper is then coated with two different catalysts, Nickel iron oxy-hydroxide and Nickel Molybdenum alloy to serve as anode and cathode. At lower voltage more current is produced, in turn, enhancing the water split and production of hydrogen gas. Only nickel coated paper electrodes can be used both as anode and cathode, for splitting water. The lower total cell voltage of 1.51V at 10mA per sq.cm current density is one of the lowest to-date reported for water splitting, claims Dr. Sayan Bhattachrya.Today weather was very sultry and with no bright Sun, but only slight sun shine through out the day. 29 May 2018 03:26 PM: WASHINGTON: Cameras will take images of the seedlings at regular intervals, which will help the high school researchers and their mentors track overall seedling growth. Scientists have sent broccoli seeds coated with a healthy dose of good bacteria to space in a quest to find a viable way for astronauts at the International Space Station (ISS) to grow their own vegetables, and possibly one day on the Moon or Mars. Six broccoli seeds were aboard the Orbital ATK Cygnus spacecraft that launched this week from Wallops Island, Virginia, as part of a space station cargo resupply mission. Three of the seeds are travelling to space as is, while the other three were coated with two different species of bacteria, developed at the University of Washington, that can live inside crop plants and improve their growth. These "beneficial" microbes, also called endophytes, may also help plants grow better in extreme low-gravity environments, and where nutrients or water could be lacking.
