Log 9 an IIT Roorkee spin-off, says it is using the wonder material ‘graphene’ to make the metal-air batteries commercially viable and affordable for e-vehicles and stationary applications like power backup products. But there is a ‘graphene rod’ along the metal plate that generates electricity with water as its base for the chemical reaction. The electricity thus generated is sent to an electric motor that drives the car. The car will give a range of 1,000 km on a single charge and will require 1 liter of water every 300kms. Once you cross the 1,000 km mark, the aluminum plate will need to be replaced. Costing Rs 5,000, the replacement will not take longer than 15 minutes.

20 November 2018: Surprise discovery for Indian scientists: nanosheets can also act as chemical reagents. The team from IIT Gandhinagar discovers that boron-rich nanosheets are chemical reagents too, with potential applications in energy storage devices and next-generation sensors. The research team at the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar, has found that boron-rich nanosheets, developed by them earlier this year, can also act as a chemical reagent. During experiments, researchers noticed that boron nanosheets could remain afloat in water for long durations. The nanosheets, they found, remained afloat due to hydride groups borrowed from the water. This observation led them to a new idea, using nanosheets in place of sodium borohydride, a popular reagent used to chemically reduce gold salt. When gold salt was introduced in the dispersion of boron-rich nanosheets, it instantly reduced and formed gold nanoparticles onto nanosheets without the need of any external help. They found that this can be extended to synthesize platinum and silver nanoparticles by dipping nanosheets in their respective salt solutions. This means boron-rich nanosheets can function as nanoscale factories to manufacture nanoparticles by using metal ions as raw material. “The formation of nanohybrids with gold and graphene provides the proof of concept that the inherent reducing character of these nanosheets can be availed to create diverse mixed-dimensional heterostructures in solution,” researchers observed in their study in journal Nanoscale.
20 November 2018: The Doomed star on brink of rare gamma-ray burst discovered. Scientists have discovered a rare star 8,000 light years from Earth that is on the brink of a massive supernova explosion and is expected to produce a dangerous gamma-ray burst, one of the most extreme energetic events in the universe after the Big Bang. A gamma-ray burst has never been detected within the Milky Way galaxy before, according to the study published in the journal Nature Astronomy. The star is a part of a system nicknamed Apep, after the serpentine Egyptian god of chaos. It comprises two hot, luminous stars, known to astronomers as Wolf-Rayets - orbit each other every hundred years or so, according to researchers from the University of Sydney in Australia. This orbital dance is embossed on a fast wind streaming off the stars. Using spectroscopy, the astronomers have measured the velocity of the stellar winds as fast as 12 million km an hour.

Fig.4a  Double emission OLED's Explore Spin Property

QUANTUM MECHANICAL SPIN: Scientists have discovered that semiconducting molecules with unpaired electrons, termed 'radicals' can be used to fabricate very efficient organic-light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), exploiting their quantum mechanical 'spin' property to overcome efficiency limitations for traditional, non-radical materials.Radicals are usually noted for their high chemical reactivity and often detrimental effects, from human health to the ozone layer. Now radical-based OLEDs could form the basis for next-generation displays and lighting technologies.  Running electricity through these radical-based OLEDs leads to the formation of bright-doublet excited states which emit deep-red light with near-100% efficiency. For traditional compounds (i.e. non-radicals without an unpaired electron), quantum-mechanical-spin considerations dictate that charge injection forms 25% bright-'singlet' and 75% dark-'triplet' states in OLED operation. Radicals pose an elegant solution to this fundamental spin problem which has troubled researchers ever since the development of OLEDs from the 1980s.In future, efficient blue- and green-light radical-based diodes could appear with further materials innovation. The researchers are working on exploiting radicals beyond lighting applications, and expect radicals to impact other branches of organic electronics research.

Nov 24, 2018 09:26 IST: Physicist proposes new idea to travel faster than light; could pave way for time travel. Miguel Alcubierre believes that creating a warp bubble will help spacecraft travel above the speed of light. Making things more clear, Alpha Centauri is our closest neighboring star system which lies approximately 4.4 light years away. To reach there quickly, space agencies should put a spaceship in a warp bubble after shrinking the space in front and expanding the space behind. The starship will then arrive Alpha Centauri in just 4.4 years. Alcubierre also made it clear that the concept of traveling via warp bubble is very similar to that of a moving walkway in an airport.  "You just stand there and you move. You don't have to walk. It just pushes you along," said Alcubierre, New York Times reports. To travel via warp bubble, energy is needed, and initial calculations revealed that it demands an impossibly gargantuan amount of energy, much more than the energy that exists in the universe to materialise this plan. Later, researchers found that the energy demanded to create a warp bubble will be very much equivalent to Jupiter's mass converted to energy. If scientists succeed in traveling at a speed greater than light, it could break all current theories of physics. Traveling faster than light may also help humans to travel across time, a concept which is mostly depicted in Hollywood science fiction movies.

24 Nov. 2018: 6 AM: Sticky hydrogel could revolutionize knee surgery. In fact, the new hydrogel (that's 90 percent water and composed of a double-network matrix and a fiber network) adheres to tissues even more when it's compressed or stretched. Dominique Pioletti, one of the team leaders, explained that it's because the "double network structure distributes incoming mechanical energy throughout" the hydrogel. If you load the material with repair cells or drugs, it can heal broken cartilages without the need to damage them further with sutures. Pioletti said: "Our hydrogel is ten times more adhesive than currently available bioadhesives on the market such as fibri. And thanks to its high water content, our hydrogel is very similar in nature to the natural tissue it's designed to heal." The researchers have already proven that the hydrogel can adhere to several types of tissues. Going forward, they plan to load it with different agents typically used for treatment and to tailor it to specific applications.Nov 24, 2018, 5:40 pm IST:
