06 August 2019:08:50: (8 hours ago): The ambitious project began in the 1970s, and scientists in the former Soviet Union began to drill a hole that was just 9-inches in diameter. The hole eventually extended 7.5 miles into the Earth’s crust, farther than the deepest point in the ocean, Challenger Deep in the Marianas Trench in the Pacific Ocean at 6.8 miles. What did the scientists learn, and what did they find at these incredible depths? Quite a lot actually. They found single-celled plankton organisms at 4.3 miles down, and at nearly the same depth they discovered water. They also discovered that the temperature reached 356° F at the bottom of the hole which was more than their estimates. This became the reason the hole had to be eventually abandoned in 1994. The hole was simply too hot for drilling to continue. The environment became more liquid because of the hot conditions, and the borehole was increasingly more difficult to maintain. Plus it ruined equipment quickly. But the scientists were able to more accurately estimate the distance to the centre of the Earth to almost 4,000 miles. Their hole was only a drop in the buck.

The galaxies were previously undiscovered because their distance makes their light very faint and hard to detect. This is the first time that such a large population of massive galaxies was confirmed during the first 2 billion years of the 13.7-billion-year life of the universe. These were previously invisible to us.Our initial suspicions about their existence came from the Spitzer Space Telescope’s infrared data. 13 August 2019: Lightning struck near the North Pole 48 times. It's not normal. That’s why it took scientists by surprise when dozens of lightning strikes were detected within 300 nautical miles of the North Pole this past weekend. Although plenty of factors needed to come together to produce the lightshow, the specter of climate change lingers over this meteorological mystery. It is possible that a freakishly warm Arctic, a staggering lack of sea ice, and even possibly smoke from unprecedented wildfires within the Arctic Circle, among other things, contributed to this lightning’s unexpected appearance near the top of the world. Between 2012 and 2017, there was no more than one single day each summer where lightning was seen within this range, and sometimes none was detected. In those years, the most discharges recorded in that area in a single day was six. There were 48 individual discharges within 300 nautical miles of the pole, with more than 1,000 detected within 600 nautical miles of the pole.

After a brief, snaking flight above the field, the drone landed and the researchers removed a handful of memory cards. Back at their computers, they analysed the images for signs the corn was stressed from a lack of water. Researchers deliberately cut back on water for some crops, trying to get the best harvest with the least amount of moisture — a practice called deficit irrigation. The need is especially pressing in seven U.S. states that rely on the Colorado River: Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.
