Oct. 1, 2022: Two quakes jolt northeast. Mid-day - Yesterday 10:52 am. One had its epicenter in the neighboring country of Myanmar, the second in Manipur. A report by National Centre for Seismology said a 5.2-magnitude earthquake, with epicenter in Myanmar, was recorded at 3.52 am. It lay at a depth of 140 km. Tremors were felt in Assam, including Guwahati. The second 3.8-magnitude quake, with epicenter in Kamjong, Manipur, lay at a depth of 10 km.

In India, the Champaran Satyagraha of 1917 led by Gandhi was a watershed moment in the Indian freedom struggle.

Oct. 7, 2022: 08:16 IST: ‘Can read, talk’: ISRO’s humanoid Vyommitra’s skills get a lift-off with digital grey matter. The robot to have ability to operate and read the display panels aboard the unmanned test flight and communicate with the ISRO ground stations. Tiki Rajwi, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM. ‘Vyommitra’, the humanoid designed and developed by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to fly aboard unmanned test missions ahead of the Gaganyaan human space-flight mission, is undergoing pre-flight ground tests at the ISRO Inertial Systems Unit (IISU) here. Over the past few months, IISU has successfully integrated it with a computer ‘brain’ which enables it to ‘read’ control panels aboard the unmanned test flights and communicate with the ISRO ground stations, IISU director Sam Dayala Dev told The Hindu. ISRO and IISU were in the news when they unveiled Vyommitra — the ‘female’ robot astronaut — in 2020. Vyommitra is a half-humanoid lacking lower limbs. IISU was responsible for the design, development, and integration of the robot, while sister ISRO Centre Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) at Thumba here developed its fingers.

The X-ray spectrometer ‘CLASS’ on the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter has mapped an abundance of sodium on the moon for the first time, according to the Indian Space Research Organization. Chandrayaan-1 X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer (C1XS) detected sodium from its characteristic line in X-rays which opened up the possibility of mapping the amount of sodium on the moon, ISRO said.

In Darma valley, the last outpost near the China border, last week received more than 4 ft of snowfall. Pithoragarh: Heavy snowfall lashed several areas in Dharchula town in Pithoragarh district, leaving up to two feet of snow in the upper areas and blocking key roads near the Nepal border on Sunday. In Darma valley, the last outpost near the China border, last week received more than four feet of snowfall in the mountains at an altitude of 17,500 feet. Security personnel had to patrol the area under extreme circumstances.

The plant, which was expected to have gone extinct over two thousand years ago was known as silphion (or silphium) by the ancient Greeks. The professor discovered what he believes to be a botanical survivor, which could open new doors to medicines we haven’t seen in two millennia.

The 'True Summit' is at an altitude of 8163 meters against the previously recognized summit altitude of 8116 meters. This year the Nepal authorities designated Mt Manaslu's actual or 'True Summit' height at 8163 meters.

Toxic metals were assessed in Tinospora cordifolia (Guduchi), Berberis aristata (Daruharidra) and Neopicrorhiza scrophulariiflora (Katuki) in the study “Impact of Climate Change on Medicinal Plants of Selected Districts in Nepal-2020,” carried out by the department. The study was carried out in three districts—Manang, Dhading and Parsa—and three important medicinal plants were chosen for the study. The researchers traced 0.14, 0.008, 0.65, and 0.08 parts per million (ppm) of arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury, respectively in the sample of Neopicrorhiza scrophulariiflora. Similarly, the sample of Berberis aristata had 0.08ppm of arsenic, 0.08ppm of cadmium, 0.08ppm of lead, and 0.04ppm of mercury.

Oct. 15, 2022: New 'Miracle Material' Helps Scientists Break Solar Power Record. Bharat Sharma - 8h ago. A solar power world record has been now broken with a "miracle material" called  perovskite. This material allowed researchers to pass the 30% efficiency barrier with silicon solar cells for the first time. The research was undertaken by a team from various universities and institutes in the Netherlands. They used a tandem solar cell to complement traditional silicon-based cells. The latter have an energy conversion efficiency of around 22% and the properties of perovskite.
