Record-breaking detection of radio signal from atomic hydrogen in distant galaxy. Chethan Kumar • 26m ago. Astronomers from McGill University in Canada and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru have used data from the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) in Pune to detect a radio signal originating from atomic hydrogen in an extremely distant galaxy. “The astronomical distance over which such a signal has been picked up is the largest so far by a large margin. This is also the first confirmed detection of strong lensing of 21cm emission from a galaxy. The findings have been published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society,” IISc said in a statement on Monday. Pointing out that atomic hydrogen is the basic fuel required for star formation in a galaxy, IISc said when hot ionized gas from the surrounding medium of a galaxy falls onto the galaxy, the gas cools and forms atomic hydrogen, which then becomes molecular hydrogen, and eventually leads to the formation of stars.

Back in 2012, Russian scientists from the Institute of Cell Biophysics regenerated the silene stenophylla, a native plant of Serbia with white flowers, from 32,000-year-old seeds. The seeds were discovered in Siberia, buried 124 feet beneath the permafrost. The researchers were able to produce a number of Silene stenophylla plants from 32,000-year-old seed pods. Their accomplishment was detailed in a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The seeds were discovered completely frozen in ice. Austrian scientists attempted to map the genomes of the ancient plants several years after the successful regeneration to learn how the seeds survived for so long. The mature and immature seeds, completely frozen in ice, were discovered 124 feet (38 metres) beneath the permafrost, surrounded by layers of mammoth, bison and woolly rhinoceros bones. According to National Geographic, the ice-encased seeds were surrounded by layers of mammoth, bison, and woolly rhinoceros bones. Radiocarbon dating was used by scientists to assess the age of the batch of mature and immature seeds recovered from the permafrost. Despite being 124 feet below the surface of the ice, the seeds were fully utilized by the scientists who retrieved the tissue and germinated it in glass vials. "Late Pleistocene plant tissue of S. stenophylla, naturally preserved in permafrost, may be regenerated utilizing tissue culture and micropropagation to yield healthy sexually reproducing plants," according to the study, which was published in the journal Science. The plant proved to be the oldest regenerated plant, knocking out a Judean date palm from around 2,000 years ago.

An extremely rare comet was visible during dawn in the sky above Abu Dhabi on January 14. Comets are of interest to scientists because they are remnants of the early Solar System, and can tell us about the conditions and composition of the early Solar System. When a comet approaches the Sun, the heat causes the ice in the comet to turn into a gas, which surrounds the nucleus of the comet in a bright coma. The gas and dust in the coma form a bright tail that always points away from the Sun.

Shortest tunnel will be 538 metres.13 bridges will be constructed. Also, there will be five railway stations.
As of 9th August 2022, 52.32 per cent of the construction of the 14 tunnels was done. The Sikkim state of India has a boundary with China, the neighbor with whom we do not have cordial relations. Hence this project is important from a defense point of view too. After railway connectivity, the Indian Army can swiftly move to this area. Sikkim is situated in the Eastern Himalayas. The state is famous for its biodiversity (including subtropical climate and alpine) and is also a host to Kangchenjunga, the highest peak in India (and the third highest on the globe).
