ABSTRACT

A major observation by the author is that the Hudhud cyclone is more a ‘Super-Wind circulation’ with water vapor and moderate rain. There was no thunder or lightning accompanying the wind-circulation of tremendous speed. The water was picked up from the Bay of Bengal Sea. As per the NASA reports the circulation was maximum at the central region of the super-wind. The detailed color pictures indicate and support the author’s model analysis. CONTRASTINGLYThe Super Typhoon Vongfong carried lot of water.

Hudhud cyclone left the Visakhapatnam city on Oct 12, 2014 totally devastated. It uprooted all the big trees of the city. Many trees uprooted destroyed electric poles, power lines, transformers and service wires for domestic connection. On Oct.12, 2014 at 8AM and again at 10AM the mild Earth Tremors occurred in Official Colony and the third and fourth floors slightly swung. The super storm struck Visakhapatnam on the Oct. 12, 2014 from morning 6.30AM to evening 11PM, with crossing of super-cyclone around 13h04m wind that increased in power by 13h27m. At 13h32, 13h33m and at 13h34m heavy wind developed. But at 13h40m heavy wind spiraling upward noticed and commented by Prayascha. The wind speed exceeded 205km.

The state government mooted to underground cables at Rs.500crores earlier on Oct 6. The total power supply would be given by Oct 26 in the city and by Oct 30 in rural areas. Visakhapatnam termed as ‘Vishada-patnam’ and as ‘Visihoka-sandram’.  It created a ‘Vilayam-Pralayam’ described as ‘Visakha Vishad Geetika’ it became a ‘Sidhila Nagari’. Many foreign birds at Visakhapatnam perished in the super-cyclone. Zoo at Visakhapatnam is in a very bad state. Bus-stops collapsed. OHV traction of railways got destructed. Aerodrome had a loss of 72crores of Rupees. 300 acres of agricultural land submerged in water. Banana crop destroyed. Bheemili faced ‘Bibastam’. In Odisha state in Korput Zillah on Sunday night at 12 O’clock Bhaminput area “Shantabarik Lady” delivered three children in Balia village.

Hudhud originated from a low pressure system that formed under the influence of an upper-air cyclonic circulation in the Andaman Sea on October 6. Hudhud intensified into a cyclonic storm on October 8 and as a Severe Cyclonic Storm on October 9. Hudhud underwent rapid deepening in the following days and was classified as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm. Shortly before landfall near Visakhapatnam, AP, on October 12, Hudhud reached its peak strength with three minute wind speeds of 175 km/h (109 mph) and a minimum central pressure of 960 mbar (28.35 inHg). The system from AP drifted northwards towards Uttar Pradesh and Nepal, causing widespread rains in both areas and heavy snowfall in the latter. Heavy rainfall accompanied by hailstorms lashed the central and western regions of Nepal for the past days of Oct 16, 2014, with snowfall of 4 to 5meters height. Severe weather triggered the tail end of cyclone Hudhud, which battered India’s east coast, hit trekking groups at Mount Dhaulagiri in Central Nepal and Annapurna in Thorang Pass area which lies between border of Manang and Mustang districts.

PAST HISTORY

In 37 years AP witnessed 60 devastations due to heavy rains. 1971 October and 1977 November (Divi seema) Cyclones were the most devastating [see 1977 cyclone report by the author published in Physics Section, Paper No.89, the 68th Ind. Sci.  Cong. Session, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, 3-8th January 1981]. It appears that the Visakhapatnam city had previous super-rain havoc in 1891.

PREAMBLE

The name for the storm HUDHUD is contributed by Oman. It is an Arabic word. It is Hoope Bird which is called Hudhud in Arabic.

One man VVJ Syama Sunder Rao, Inspector of Police, on Oct 12, stayed 36 hours atop hill Kailasagiri, braved 180kmph winds to operate the conventional mode hand held VHF set on the single direct channel for 100minutes that kept people in Khaki and district officials connected. Later he by repeater station in Simhachalam, linked VHF system network. When rain water entered the room he switched off the trunking system to save equipment worth Crores of rupees.

The Hudhud Super-storm cyclone and the wind speed of 225km at Visakhapatnam directed towards God Siva and Goddess Parvathi divine hill. Visakhapatnam witnessed a ‘vidwa’nsham’ (destruction) due to Hudhud super-cyclone. It is accompanied by a ‘vayu vilayam’ (circulating and spiraling upward wind). The forcible winds described as a ‘Pralaya Ghosha’ - destructive sound wind waves. All the big trees collapsed along with current poles, hutments, windblown top covers of houses, broken current wires, destroyed and flown of Vehicles, converted the cities of Visakhapatnam, Vijayanagaram and Srikakulam unprecedented ghost cities.

HUDHUD lashed India, VONGFONG pounded Japan, Atlantic storms strengthened, Hundreds of thousnad evacuated in India, Japan, power knocked out in Burmuda. [The Associated Press Posted: Oct.12, 2014 at 6h46mAM Last updated: Oct.13, 2014 at 1h28mPM ET]

In India, Cyclone Hudhud moved 150 km north-northwest of the city of Visakhapatnam, where it made landfall Sunday. Weather forecasters downgraded it to a tropical depression, on Monday, with wind speeds of up to 70 km per hour, considerably slower than on Sunday.

The strongest tropical cyclone in the northern Indian Ocean this year killed at least 84 people and inflicted as much as $11 billion in damage to India's east coast. Cyclone Hudhud intensified to a Category-4 storm just before roaring ashore near the Andhra Pradesh city of Visakhapatnam (Vizag) on Sunday, packing winds of up to 200km.
Hudhud originated from a low pressure are over Tenasserim coast and adjoining North Andaman Sea on 6th October 2014. It concentrated into a depression over North Andaman Sea the next day morning over the North Andaman Sea while moving west-northwestwards.  On the same day the region and associated wind speed was about 25-30 knots. The wind speed was relatively higher in northern sector of the system. According to satellite observation, intense to very intense convection was seen over.

According to latest observation, the cyclonic storm over west central Bay of Bengal moved west north-westwards during the past six hours and lay centered at 0530 hrs IST on Saturday  Oct. 11 about 330 km southeast of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and 380 km south-southeast of Gopalpur in Odisha.

On 9 Oct 2014 at 3h53m PM picture reveals the upper temperature as -630F (-530C) of the cyclone and NASA warned a severe cyclone to hit the coastal AP.

Visakhapatnam crossed cyclone showed very nasty destruction in Ranastala, Echerla,  Gara and Srikakulum areas. Many boats lost into the sea at Ranastala nearby villages. From Saturday night there was no electricity to the Srikakulam district due to the collapse of 220KV lines, in Pendurthi in Visakhapatnam, by the fallen trees.

escalation

It has been noticed by, Putrev Jaganadha Prayascha, Xth std, Sri Chaitanya Techno School, Visakhapatnam at Maharanipeta, that North Eastern trade winds and North Western trade winds intersection point, combined with under water volcanic eruption generated heat that pushed hot air upward and cool air downward and due to these combined factors, on rare occasion two cyclones are formed one in the Bay of Bengal and the other Japan Coastal area.

On Oct.12, 2014 at 8AM and again at 10AM the mild Earth Tremors occurred in Official colony, and the third and fourth floors slightly swung. The tremor at 10AM lasting 2 to 3secs was felt by the author KLN, at the second floor residential accommodation of Shri PVR Murthi near the coastal battery area.

I left home at 9h30mAM with the gushing rain and wind to the residential accommodation of Shri PVR Murthi near the coastal battery area. At the turning point of the official colony road to the straight street of Shri PVR Murthi’s house I have struggled hard in the windy rain to reach his complex residence, halting for a few minutes for the gush of wind to slightly subside and then found a person clearing the fallen tree at the entrance to their complex. We Shri PVR Murthi, his wife, their son Prayascha, observed the cyclone development from 10 AM to12h04mPM.

When it became lull and myself, the boy Prayascha, and his mother Sow. Alivelu Manga Garu moved on to the terrace at 12h04mPM on the Oct 12, 2014 to observe the cyclone but it was totally lull with no wind at all. Lull period continued till 13h04mPM when the wind speed suddenly slashed up.

That was the period when the Super-storm touched the Visakhapatnam Coast exactly an hour from 12h04m to 13h04m the cyclone stalled over the city Visakhapatnam.

From 13h04m, in the afternoon, it was impossible to sit in the balcony of their home to observe the slashing winds of the storm. Shri PVR Murthi closed the door of room, facing the Ocean, from which we were ‘on-looking’ the growth of the cyclone. Sow. Alivelu Manga Garu described that in the morning Northwest to South East and in the afternoon South to North the cyclone changed the direction of its onslaught. At 13h04m wind that increased in power by 13h27m. At 13h32, 13h33m and at 13h34m heavy wind developed. But at 13h40m heavy wind spiraling upward noticed and commented by Prayascha. Some people, unaware, were found rolled up the hill road of Maharanipeta beach road from the Ocean side to the Collector’s office.

At 13h52m heavy wind of 180km speed evolved. The spiraling was anticlockwise. At 14h01m the storm thrust increased speed.

The super-cyclone wind was felt and noticed around 14h12m. The power of it increased considerably at around 14h50m may be 220km achieved. 15h25m the speed slightly reduced and further at 15h40m it reduced again meaning that the cyclone has moved from the coastal region on to the land. The impact of the super cyclone thrashing was on to the hill of God Shiva and Goddess Parvathi idols.

PUDIMDAKA

Hudhud super cyclone crossed AP coast at PUDIMADAKA village situated at 41km from Visakhapatnam on the Oct 12, 2014 and sea entered into land about 40meter distance up to the Anjanea Swamy Temple. There about 600 boats got destroyed.
An estimated 1.65 lakh population in 176 villages under 31 mandals was affected by the cyclone, which had unleashed heavy rains and high speed winds.
IMPACT

All the trees at Visakhapatnam have fallen down the impact was tremendous throughout the city except a few coconut trees survived the impact with, of course, their top leaves blown off. It may take ten years to have the big trees grown and many old people may not witness the growth. Normalcy to be restored by Oct 22, it is hoped, with the team of dedicated official workers on recovery job. Essential commodities and vegetables are being supplied by Government. Schools reopened on Monday Oct 20, after the lapse of a week’s loss. Cleaning up the city started with the elite people of the town taking up the broom work and celebrities are showing off their bit of contribution.

Visakhapatnam Port Southern breakwater took 276kmph (159 knots) beating of the Super-cyclone.

KATHMANDU DISASTER IN NEPAL

Hudhud caused Nepal blizzard killing trekkers at Annapurna trekking route. On Thursday, two days (14th and 15th) after the major snow storm triggered avalanches followed Hudhud, on Annapurna (height 8091 meters) circuit trekking route 220kms away from Katmandu.

At least 39 people, including trekkers from Canada, India, Israel, Slovakia, Poland and Japan, died in the blizzards and avalanches that swept the Himalayas last week, battering the popular Annapurna trekking circuit. Nepalese officials said they rescued 407 people, 226 of them foreigners. Most of the victims were on or near the Annapurna trekking route, a 220-kilometer (140-mile) collection of trails through the Annapurna mountain range.

Super Typhoon VONGFONG, JAPAN
October 11, 2014 6:15PM Saturday.

Vongfong, meaning "the wasp" in Cantonese, turned North-Eastward and moved across Kyushu and Shikoku on Monday. Landfall occurred on Kyushu near Kagoshima around 9:15 a.m. on Monday, local time, as the storm began to accelerate North-Eastward. This northeastward track continued on Monday night and Tuesday as the cyclone brought torrential rain and locally damaging winds to Honshu and parts of Hokkaido.

Meteorologists expect the storm to pass over the country's largest island, Honshu, hitting the capital, Tokyo, before dawn on Tuesday.

Prior to reaching Mainland Japan, Vongfong blasted through the Ryukyu Islands of southern Japan over the weekend. Wind speeds peaked at 143kph (89mph) at the Kadena Air Base in Okinawa. Nearby, about 500mm (20 inches) fell at Kunigami on Saturday. Despite weakening while crossing Japan, wind gusts over 92kph (57mph) were reported in Tokyo along with torrential downpours that produced 50-100mm (2-4 inches) of rainfall. Widespread rainfall of 50-100mm (2-4 inches) was reported across Kyushu, Shikoku, Honshu and eastern Hokkaido through Tuesday evening, local time. In one of the hardest hit areas, nearly 300mm (12”) of rain fell in only 12 hours in Sumoto, Japan, on Monday. Vongfong was classified as a super typhoon during the middle of last week as it moved through an area of low wind shear and very warm ocean temperatures but has since lost that title. The tropical system had reached the equivalent strength of a Category 5 hurricane, featuring wind speeds greater than 257kph (160mph)." Vongfong became the strongest tropical cyclone we've had all year anywhere on Earth," AccuWeather.com. The latest and strongest in a string of powerful storms to hit Japan -- Vongfong -- slammed into Kyushu, the southernmost of the country's four main islands, Monday morning as it continued its destructive path across the country. Vongfong first made landfall in Japan in Okinawa early Sunday. It wreaked havoc across the prefecture, knocking out power before losing strength and being downgraded from a typhoon to a tropical storm.

An earthquake with an estimated 6.3 magnitude has shaken the seabed 150km south of the Japanese coast, at a depth of 13km according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/.e/img/3.0/mosaic/bttn_close.gif
Typhoon Vongfong had winds recorded as fast as 160 miles per hour. Fortunately, Typhoon Vongfong has slowed down a bit to an average wind speed of 126 miles per hour, but it could still cause incredible amounts of damage and life-threatening situations. Super typhoon Vongfong is expected to impact southern Japan from Saturday In another storm lashing Asia, Typhoon Vongfong was downgraded to tropical storm as it hit the Japanese island of Kyushu after battering the southern island of Okinawa and Kadena. Its current wind strength is about 111km/h (69m/h), down from the 130km/h it reached as it passed over Okinawa. Train service and flights were disrupted in Kyushu and the neighboring island of Shikoku. As typhoon Vongfong, with winds of up to 110 miles per hour (180km/h), unleashed rains.

Typhoon Vongfong moves toward Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands while it continues to strengthen. The impact should be most felt this Monday local time. In a statement issued Sunday morning local time (Saturday evening U.S. East Coast time), the NWS office warned that "devastating damage is expected" on the island of Rota, which lies about 45 miles northeast of Guam in the Northern Mariana Islands. Vongfong will maintain a northwest track through the weekend under the steering influence of a subtropical high pressure aloft to its north. Its relatively quick forward motion, between 15 to 20 mph, will take it quickly toward Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.

The BBC's Rupert Wingfield-Hayes in Tokyo says that although Vongfong has weakened considerably, it is still a huge storm system and is carrying an enormous amount of moisture. When Vongfong hits the mountains of Kyushu it will drop hundreds of millimetres of rain that could unleash flash flooding and landslides.

Typhoon Vongfong Pounds Japan: Agence France-Presse, October 14, 2014 13:17 IST. Vongfong has since moved back into the Western Pacific Ocean and continues to weaken with no further impacts to land expected.

CONCLUSIONS

A major observation by the author is that the Hudhud cyclone is more a ‘Super-Wind circulation’ with water vapor and moderate rain. There was no thunder or lightning accompanying the wind-circulation of tremendous speed. The water was picked up from the Bay of Bengal Sea. As per the NASA reports the circulation was maximum at the central region of the super-wind. The detailed color pictures published by various agencies indicate and support the author’s model analysis [see Fig.6].

Contrastingly, the VONGFONG carried enormous water and circulated at tremendous speed while moving very slowly over Japan.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT

In the year when my father Late Prof. K. R. Rao D.Sc. (Madras) D.Sc. (London) was at his intermediate studies in Visakhapatnam during the Deepavali holidays they noticed that the back waters of the city have enormously increased in height due to heavy rains in the year 1917 and entered the top room on the hill of the old Visakhapatnam residence in Kotcherlakota Veedhi opposite the Mahalakshmi Temple street. Surprisingly the elders and the youngsters were playing ‘cards game’ at that time in the afternoon.
