Jun 17, 2018: Mushroom Spring, Octopus Spring, and Green Finger Pool: The vast majority of life on Earth uses visible red light in the process of photosynthesis, but the new type uses near-infrared light instead. It was detected in a wide range of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) when they grow in near-infrared light, found in shaded conditions like bacterial mats in Yellowstone and in beach rock in Australia. As scientists have now discovered, it also occurs in a cupboard fitted with infrared LEDs in Imperial College London.Until now, it was thought that chlorophyll-f just harvested the light. The new research shows that instead chlorophyll-f plays the key role in photosynthesis under shaded conditions, using lower-energy infrared light to do the complex chemistry. This is photosynthesis 'beyond the red limit'.Acaryochloris lives underneath a green sea-squirt that shades out most of the visible light leaving just the near-infrared. The chlorophyll-f based photosynthesis reported today represents a third type of photosynthesis that is widespread. However, it is only used in special infrared-rich shaded conditions; Another cyanobacterium, Acaryochloris, does do photosynthesis beyond the red limit, but because it occurs in just that one species, which live underneath a green sea-squirt that shades out most of the visible light leaving just the near-infrared, it was considered one of those evolutionary pranks that nature creates on occasion. In the hot springs of Yellowstone National Park, researchers have discovered a novel chlorophyll-producing bacterium that transforms light into chemical energy. The researchers also discovered that the new genus and species belongs to a new phylum, Acidobacteria -- only the third time in the past 100 years that a new bacterial phylum has been added to the list of those with chlorophyll-producing members, of which there are now only six. The microbial mats give the hot springs in Yellowstone their remarkable yellow, orange, red, brown, and green colours. It was found at a temperature of about 50 to 66C (122 to 151F). The organism was found in three hot springs, Mushroom Spring, Octopus Spring, and Green Finger Pool, in the Lower Geyser Basin, not far from the Old Faithful Geyser, the new bacterium has special light-harvesting antennae known as chlorosomes, which contain about 250,000 chlorophylls each. The Yellowstone environments are more alkaline, about pH 8.5 (on a scale of 1 to 14), "Judging from their 16S rRNA sequences, the closest relatives of Cab. thermophilum are found around Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone and hot springs in Tibet and Thailand. June 18, 2018 10:47 IST: TOKYO: Residents in western Japan were cleaning up debris Monday evening after a powerful earthquake hit the area around Osaka, the country's second-largest city, killing four people and injuring hundreds while knocking over walls and setting off fires. The magnitude 6.1 earthquake that struck the area early Monday damaged buildings and left many homes without water or gas. The quake also grounded flights in and out of Osaka and paralysed traffic and commuter trains most of the day. 4 Dead As Quake Hits Japan's Osaka; Violent Shaking, Strongest In Record. Almost 307 people were treated for injuries at hospitals, after a strong earthquake hit Osaka on Monday morning It was the strongest shaking registered in Japan's Osaka under records which date back to 1923. The earthquake struck at 7:58 a.m. local time, with an initial magnitude of 5.9 that was later revised upwards to 6.1. At 13 km (8.1miles) it was relatively shallow, and caused heavy shaking that registered a lower 6 on the Japanese scale of 7. It was the strongest shaking registered in Osaka under records which date back to 1923. As the quake was centred inland. Flooding from burst underground water pipes, train passengers are forced to exit along train lines, and schoolchildren gathering outside in precautionary evacuations. Strong aftershocks could occur, particularly in the next two to three days.
Jun 18, 2018 11:39 am: Washington: Indian plant seed ‘Moringa oleifera’ can bring clean water to millions. Proteins from the Moringa oleifera plant, a tree native to India, can help effectively purify water in developing nations at a low cost. The plant, commonly known as the drumstick tree, is cultivated for food and natural oils, and the seeds are already used for a type of rudimentary water purification. However, this traditional means of purification leaves behind high amounts of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from the seeds, allowing bacteria to regrow after just 24hours. This leaves only a short window in which the water is drinkable. Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University in the US used sand and plant materials to create a cheap and effective water filtration medium, termed “f-sand.” F-sand was created by extracting the seed proteins from the Moringa oleifera plant, and adhering them to the surface of silica particles, the principal component of sand.
18 June 2018, 14:36 IST: 5.6 magnitude quake jolts Guatemala Escuintla province at around 8:30 pm (local time) on Sunday. It struck at a depth of around 97km near Guanagazapa. The epicentre of the quake was situated almost 70km from Guatemala City.
19 June 2018: Bengaluru. Three months after a BBC report declared that Bengaluru will be one among 11 cities in the world to reach Day Zero; a government report has now stated that the city will lose its groundwater by 2020. In fact, by 2020, 21 major cities, including Delhi, Bangalore, and Hyderabad, are expected to reach zero groundwater levels, affecting access for 100 million people. For a country like India which takes up about a quarter of the world’s groundwater, there are only 350 officials at the Central Ground Water Board. Out of them, only 200 people are looking and marking aquifers. So there is basically no agency which can do enforcement or check actual usage.

Quick Change: After the pain of heat came the hail storm that lasted nearly 45 minutes from 3PM in Visakhapatnam on Monday evening. Till then it was scorching heat of 42C. The sudden arrival of hailstorm in the old city areas, like Poona market, Buruzupeta, Kanaka Mahalakshmi Temple, and Vizag fishing harbour areas, and with a record of unusually high temperature of 42C since last three days. Bucket full of hailstones were collected by many people. Nearly a decade ago citizens have seen the hail storm. Hailstorm swept many parts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam districts on Monday. For nearly 30 minutes. Hail stones weighing around 250 to 500 grams pounded the areas. A resident of Pendurty said, “Squall and hailstorm was witnessed for nearly half an hour. Crops and some thatched huts were partially damaged in the area”. It was the first hail storm in a large scale this summer in north coastal Andhra Pradesh. Hailstorms occur in summer for a short period followed by thunder showers and rain. Hailstorms damage crops, particularly mango and cashew. The hailstorm was brought by the cumulonimbus clouds, which occur in summer due to sudden rise in temperature. 06-06-2018 · CARROLLTON, Texas -- Severe storms, including hail the size of baseballs, left a trail of damage in Texas overnight from Carrollton to Coppell to Arlington. Windows and skylights were shattered, car lights were cracked or smashed, and tree branches were knocked to the ground. Hail is a form of frozen precipitation that's created by strong thunderstorms with fast updrafts, air being pulled upward into a thunderstorm. The largest officially recognized hailstone on record to have been "captured" in the U.S. was that which fell near Vivian, South Dakota in 2010. It measured 8.0 inches in diameter, 18.5 inches in circumference, and weighed in at 1.9375 pounds.
