Fig.2 a and b: a very bright celestial object seen

close to the very small galaxy CGCG 137-068,
Astronomers across the world are puzzled by a new phenomenon, a very bright celestial object seen close to the very small galaxy CGCG 137-068,  reported in The Astronomer’s Telegram on June 17. A fast-brightening spot, initially thought to be a bright transient astronomical event lying close to the galaxy CGCG 137-068, was spotted by the ATLAS telescope. Named  AT2018cow, the transient was soon given the nickname ‘cow’. This is not due to any resemblance to the quadruped but a mere coincidence of letters in the way of naming such transients. The cow proved to be suitably interesting, because though it was initially thought to be a nova, later analysis showed that it was more like a broadline supernova of the type Ic. Transient astronomical events last from a few seconds to several weeks and may have several causes. Specifically, a Type Ic supernova is caused by the explosion of an extremely massive star which has lost its outer layers of hydrogen and helium. As part of the GROWTH collaboration, we are keeping an eye on the mysterious transient AT2018cow using the 2-metre Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT) at Hanle, Ladakh, says Shubham Srivastav, a post-doctoral fellow at IIT Bombay. We observed AT2018cow with the Giant Metre wave Radio Telescope (GMRT) on June 28 and reported our first results on June 29 in The Astronomers Telegram. Even if it is finally a Type IC supernova, it will not be a conventional one. The images and spectrum were obtained by the Hanle facility and GMRT. We have requested Astrosat to observe and it will start on July 3. In particular, AT2018cow’s fast rise time and high luminosity are unprecedented for a supernova. Hence it seems like nothing that was known before.  Anything in the unknown territory becomes exciting, and hence currently difficult to explain. However, I am confident that as astronomy community collects more data in multiple wavelengths, we will be able to nail down this exotic supernova. Spectroscopic observations showed the explosion came from another galaxy,  lCGCG 137-068,  located some 200 million light-years away in the direction of the constellation Hercules. As to what caused this intense blast, scientists don’t know yet, but they say that it is composed of a 16,000F (9,000C) cloud of high-energy particles, expanding outward at 12,000miles (20,000km) per second. It is also very bright in all parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, and its spectrum is also “surprisingly smooth,” unlike most supernovae which have distinct absorption lines. There are other objects that have been discovered that are as fast, but the fastness and the brightness, that’s quite unusual. There hasn’t really been another object like this. The astronomers reported the explosion on June 17, 2018, in The Astronomer’s Telegram.  Sort of explosion of high-energy particles moving close to the speed of light. Its surface temperature is more than 8900°C, and it is expanding outwards at 20,000km per second.
02 July 2018 03:27:24 PM : Scientists from several organisations in the US, including NASA, are planning to use remote-operated submarines to hunt for the remains of an outer space object, believed to be a meteorite, that splashed down into the Pacific Ocean on March 7. Scientists believe that about two tonnes of fragments are up for grabs. Some of these fragments could be as large as a brick and they could be scattered over a half-mile of the sea floor. The remote submarine dive is scheduled for later on Monday.
July 02, 2018 5:29 pm: With Zebronics ZEB-5CSLU3, the 5 port docking station, one can charge 5 devices simultaneously, for Rs.3,495. The charging station keeps your devices neatly organized unlike the mess of too many wires hanging off the walls. The mushroom styled LED lamp comes handy as a bedside lamp.

July 3, 2018:  Kashmir flood control: Crores spent on dredging Jhelum may have led to only a few minutes of relief.  The state’s standard response to the threat of flooding has been desilting the Jhelum to increase its capacity. But experts say this is not enough. Because when the Jhelum river floods, it discharges water at the rate of 1.20 lakh cusecs, or four times its carrying capacity. Thus, even if the Jhelum was dredged properly, it would not be enough.  So far, the government plans to dredge about 14 lakh cubic meters of the river, including 7 lakh cubic meters in Srinagar. The Jhelum, with its 24 tributaries, is the only drainage system in the Valley and also provides drinking water and irrigation. [It] therefore has tremendous socio-economic and cultural importance. After crossing the critical mark of 21-feet, the water level of the Jhelum river in south Kashmir's Sangam was recorded at 15.81 feet on Monday. The water level in Srinagar's Ram Munshi Bagh was recorded 18.38 feet on Sunday evening. Though it was still above the flood declaration level, but had been receding since Monday morning 2 July.
03 Jul 2018: 06:43am IST: PONDA: The locals of Kerya, Khandepar and Usgao heaved a sigh of relief as the authorities on Monday finally allowed light motor vehicles to ply along landslide-hit Kerya road.  It may be recalled that the locals had been forced to undergo severe hardship for almost a week due to the road closure following the landslide.  The locals appeared to have been relieved from the harrowing experience as the authorities opened the road for vehicular traffic. The locals including office goers especially students were forced to travel an additional 18-km distance to reach their respective destinations.
It was raining in Visakhapatnam since last three days, but only as a drizzle, and people expect that this type of rain allows the  earth to sink the rain water.
July  03, 2018: 10:54: Foot-over bridge collapses in Andheri, no casualties. Incessant rains, bridge collapse, bus accident, fire at rail reservation counter. A part of road over-bridge (ROB) collapsed on rail tracks in suburban Andheri at about 7.30 am bringing the local train services of Western Railway to a grinding halt.  WR services partially resume :  A NDRF team with a dog squad is present at the spot. Two people have been rescued from under the debris so far. A total of six people have been injured even as rescue operation are underway.  Train services on the Western Railway, which had come to a complete halt after the foot-over bridge collapsed this morning, have partially resumed. Trains are running between Churchgate and Bandra and Virar and Goregaon.
Jul 3, 2018, 12:58 pm IST: The boys were discovered at about 10:00 pm Monday by British divers some 400 meters (1,300 feet) from where they were believed to be stranded several km inside the cave. Bangkok: "How many of you?" asks the British voice loudly, a torchlight scanning the gaunt, hungry boys crowded on a muddy bank.  "Thirteen?.... Brilliant" -- a remarkable short exchange captured on video has electrified Thailand and paved the way for an astonishing rescue. A three-member British team -- Robert Harper, Richard Stanton and John Volanthen. Two of the Brits reached the boys late Monday, sparking joy in a country that has held its breath throughout the agonising rescue efforts. Could take weeks or even months to get boys out of Thai cave, say experts.

Fig.3 Abell 2256 galaxy cluster 1500 times massive
as our own galaxy. Watched 5 hours using UVIT.
CHENNAI: Astrosat, India’s first dedicated multi-wavelength space observatory, has captured an image of a special galaxy cluster that is more than 800 million light years away from Earth. Named Abell 2256, the galaxy cluster is made of three separate clusters of galaxies that are all merging with one another to eventually form a single massive cluster in the future. The three merging clusters contain more than 500 galaxies and the cluster is almost 100 times larger and more than 1,500 times massive as our own galaxy. Astronomers watched Abell 2256 for five hours using the UVIT to image these star-forming spiral galaxies, using the ultraviolet light emitted by their hot young stars.

3 July 2018: On Tuesday, the eastern suburbs received the most rainfall with the highest level in Kurla at 208mm till 3pm, followed by Vikhroli (192mm) and N ward (184mm). News 04 July 2018: Date 664-332 BCE: Statue of Osiris:  A large statue of Osiris from the Late Period was placed in a niche of the crypt to create the impression of an open naos. The eyes, inlaid with white stone and black glass, give the god a striking expression. His body is made from wood and would originally have been wrapped with like a mummy in linen stiffened with plaster. The plumes, ram's horns, and uraeus (a cobra with its hood extended), are in bronze, as are the two scepters-the crook and flail-he holds in each hand. Osiris, the great national god of the dead, was adopted throughout the entire land and worshipped in many temples during the later periods of ancient Egypt; it is therefore impossible to determine which sanctuary this statue came from. In the Pyramid Texts, Osiris is generally equated with the vegetation and fertility provided by the waters of the Nile. Standing Osiris statues holds a feather in one hand and a sceptre in the other. It wears a  crown with two feathers and two horns.  This statue depicts the extremely popular god Osiris. It is made of stuccoed wood and is still partially gilded, with additional cuprous metal objects such as details on the crown and the sceptres. The eyes are inlaid with alabaster and glass. The god is represented in his usual pose: standing, his body wrapped in a shroud, arms crossed on his chest, holding the crook and the flail. He wears a curved, braided beard as well as the atef crown consisting of a miter, two ostrich feathers, two ram's horns and two uraei.

Skywatchers observing the comet with telescopes may see the greenish haze surrounding it. This green glow is thought to be created by atoms of diatomic carbon surrounding the comet and fluorescing in the sunlight:  Stargazers may get to see a green comet coming towards the Earth. The heavens decree: there’s something special about July. As Aussie stargazers wait for a blood moon, they may also get to see a frosty green comet. Frosty green glow of a comet has suddenly flared as it plummets towards our Sun, raising hopes it could become visible in daytime skies. 8 July 2018: In Bundelkhand, villages are emptying out as drought becomes the new normal. According to a study, up to 55% of the region’s farmers have migrated, at least temporarily, since last November. As drought becomes the new normal, Bundelkhand, a parched region split between Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, is clearing out. The region of nearly 70,000 sq km once received 800-900 mm of rainfall a year, according to the India Meteorological Department. But over the last six to seven years, the amount of rainfall has nearly halved, with the number of rainy days falling from 52 to 24 in the June to October monsoon period, according to DK Dubey, a scientist with the weather agency. That has caused repeated and widespread crop failures, and a growing tide of farmers abandoning their land to try to find work in nearby cities.

Thailand cave rescue: British divers found the 13, hungry and huddled in darkness on a muddy bank in a partly flooded chamber several km inside the Tham Luang cave complex, on Monday 2 July, last week. The group became trapped on 23 June after heavy rains caused flooding. They were found last week by divers.  The boys were found by British rescue divers a week ago, about 4km (2.5 miles) from the cave mouth. The first group of four boys were rescued on Sunday 8 July, followed by four more on Monday, 9 July. All 12 boys and coach rescued safely; four rescue divers yet to emerge. The first boys - who have spent 15 nights trapped some 4 km. 17:45  Thai rescue op: 2 of the 12 boys brought out of cave: At least two of the boys have been successfully brought out. Authorities had said that incoming monsoon rains that could send water levels in the cave rising, coupled with falling oxygen levels in the enclosed space, added to the urgency of getting those trapped out. Earlier efforts to pump out water from the cave have been set back every time there has been a heavy downpour. Narongsak said Saturday, 7 July  that experts told him water from new rain could shrink the unflooded space where the boys are sheltering to just 10 square meters (108 square feet). 18:17 Thai cave op: 4 boys reach rescue camp, will walk out: Four boys among a group of 13 trapped in a flooded Thai cave reached the rescue base camp inside the complex today and will walk out soon. July 08, 2018 19:19: Thai rescue op: 6 of 12 boys brought out of cave so far. President Donald Trump tweets, 'The US is working very closely with the Government of Thailand to help get all of the children out of the cave and to safety. Very brave and talented people!' The operation was launched after several days of relatively mild weather, as more than 100 million of litres of water were pumped out of the cave. A total of six boys among a group of 13 trapped inside a flooded Thai cave have been rescued. July 9 2018 - 6:41AM: Australians assist in rescue of boys, coach in northern Thailand cave. 19 Australians continue to work on the precarious rescue operation. MAE SAI: Four more of the boys trapped for over two weeks in flooded cave in northern Thailand were brought out on Monday 9 July , bringing to eight the number extracted in a high-stakes rescue operation.  Leaving just four teammates and their football coach stuck underground. Thirteen foreign divers and five members of Thailand’s elite navy SEAL unit make up the main team guiding the boys to safety through narrow, submerged passageways that claimed the life of a former Thai navy diver on Friday. Rescuers had to tighten a guide rope as part of their preparations before this second phase of the rescue on Monday: Jul 09, 2018 19:44 IST: A team of 90 divers have been working for the past 24 hours to rescue 12 young soccer players and their coach from a flooded cave in Thailand in a risky operation that has been disrupted by rains. Medical teams previously said concerns included hypothermia and an airborne lung infection known as “cave disease”, which is caused by bat and bird droppings. Jul 10, 2018 17:45:14 IST: Thailand cave rescue: All 12 boys and coach rescued safely; four rescue divers yet to emerge. The four rescue divers and one doctor are yet to emerge from the cave. How does one guide a dozen children through miles of subterranean passageways, including lengthy underwater channels, largely in the dark, when many of them can’t swim? Following a similar pattern as the previous two days, the divers ventured back into the cave at 10 am (0700 GMT) on Tuesday, Narongsak told reporters. However, unlike Sunday and Monday when only four were brought out each day due to logistical constraints, rescuers would try to extract all of the remaining five in one operation, Narongsak said. A doctor and three SEALS who had stayed with the footballers would also come out on Tuesday, he added. The escape route was a challenge for even experienced divers. Three members of the SEAL unit and an army doctor, who has stayed with the boys since they were found, were the last people due to come out of the cave. Two expert British cave divers locate the missing boys and their coach. They record a video of the boys talking with them. There say May, British Prime Minister, was one of the first world leaders to celebrate the success, and pay tribute to the divers who risked their own lives to save the boys. The 12 Thai boys and their football coach who were trapped in a cave in Thailand got through the ordeal by practising meditation, family members have said.  According to a mother of one of the boys, the team were meditating in the widely shared video of their discovery by two British divers. “Look at how calm they were sitting there waiting. No one was crying or anything. It was astonishing,” she told the Associated Press. The coach who was rescued from the cave on Tuesday, trained as a Buddhist monk for 12 years before he decided to coach the Wild Boars soccer team. The Latest: Medic, divers who stayed with boys leave cave 10 July 2018.

Jul 11 2018 11:07 AM: For 9 days before they were found, the boys didn’t have any food and drank muddy water. Thailand boys were sedated, strapped onto stretcher and extricated from flooded cave. Since most of the boys could not swim and no one had diving experience, each one of them had to be sedated and strapped onto stretchers with full face masks and passed along the passageways. KBL experts were on site at the cave in Tham Luang since July 5 and offered technical know-how and advice on dewatering and pumps involved in the rescue operation. KBL had also offered to provide four specialised high capacity Autoprime dewatering pumps. 'Made In India' Water Pumps Were Used. For Clearing Way To Rescue 13 People From Thai Cave. The boys and their coach were spotted quite by chance on July 2 by British diver John Volanthen. He had used guide lines to scour the complex. When he reached the end of the line, he claimed he fastened it in mud underwater and surfaced to find the boys staring at him. Had Volanthen’s line been shorter by 15 ft, he could have possibly missed them. Destiny, happily, decided otherwise. Hooyah! World-renowned medic and diver Richard Harris (pic) was reportedly the last person to leave the water-logged cavern on Tuesday.

The dramatic three-day rescue of a youth soccer team from a flooded cave in Thailand almost ended in tragedy Tuesday after the main pump reportedly malfunctioned, sending water into the caverns as the remaining rescuers were still trying to get out. The final four boys and their soccer coach had just gotten out of the cave after the 18-day ordeal just hours before the pump failed as a medic and three Thai navy SEAL divers were making their way out.  As three of the SEALS made their way into chamber three of the cave they were told the pumps shut off for an "unknown reason," and that the water levels suddenly started rising. Hodges said that would have cut access off to chambers two, one, and eventually access to get out of the cave.

oldest colours in geological records.

Scientists uncover world's oldest colours from rocks under the Sahara desert. Scientists from Australian National University (ANU) have uncovered what they believe are the oldest colours in geological records. The 1.1 billion-year-old bright pink pigments were extracted from rocks deep beneath the Sahara desert in West Africa, where they were found intact under rocks. This bright pink colour of these pigments is believed to place these fossils at over half a billion years older than other prehistoric pigments previously unearthed. The discovery:  The bright pink pigment they found, called porphyrin, is actually the molecular fossil of chlorophyll, the green pigment in plants that make them photosynthetic. The fossils were thought to be green originally, then blood red, and eventually deep purple as their concentrations increased with mineralisation. When the fossils were diluted, their final form revealed the bright pink pigment in an oil form.
