Fig.1 The Devi comes and sits during the festival.

The locals worship her for ten days, and then she goes.
Could these be the handiwork of a prehistoric civilization?. Efforts are on to unlock the secrets of the shapes engraved in stone across 52 hamlets of Maharashtra.  An hour’s drive from Ratnagiri in Maharashtra’s Konkan region, Devihasol is a hamlet in the middle of nowhere. A 12th century Durga temple and an ancient tank are all there is to it, besides a curious structure guarded by bollards and chains. You see that stone in the middle, that is where the Devi comes and sits during the festival. The locals worship her for ten days, and then she goes. No one touches or disturbs her. We have built these guards so no one damages the spot. Our ancestors have said that it is from the time of the Pandavas. The stone in question is a petroglyph, a square engraved into the ancient rock on the ground, lined with wavy, snakelike forms. In a smaller concentric square are abstract markings in perfect grids. These petroglyphs have now been found in 52 villages across 150km in the area. Many feature human figures, both life-size and larger, and animals that include non-natives like the extinct elephant bird and the rhino.  Little is known about the people who carved them, though archeologists are ascribing it to an ancient, previously unknown civilization. To prove that it might have been a part of a lost civilization, we have to find a lot of other things, like stone tools, besides more of these sites. We can also gather that it was definitely not a farming society, but seeing the kind of curvilinear lines on the rocks, there was some advancement in thinking. The lines are abstract, but they are in some form, and there is a particular pattern among a lot of them.

people in Andhra Pradesh for Spirit.

This is fully, the purest form of the spirit, which has no additives or diluting agents. It is aromatic, unusually floral and leaves a fiery trail down the throat, with an aftertaste that is sweet and smoky. This—possibly the best, most natural form of mahua you can get—is available at the very reasonable price of ₹100-150 for 650 ml. Mahua, as a spirit, is an important aspect of rituals among the Adivasi communities of Chhattisgarh, the Chotanagpur plateau and parts of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh. These tribal communities consider themselves to be the guardians of mahua. They collect the flowers and consume the spirit. Births, deaths, weddings, and funerals—everything is touched by mahua. Though it remains a minor forest product, it is the nerve center of a lucrative local business.

October 21, 2018; 13:21 IST: New material harvests Sun's heat for cheaper electricity. The innovation is an important step for putting solar heat-to-electricity generation in direct cost competition with fossil fuels, researchers said.  Researchers conceived a composite of ceramic zirconium carbide and the metal tungsten for more robust heat exchangers. They created plates of the ceramic-metal composite. The plates host customizable channels for tailoring the exchange of heat. Mechanical tests and corrosion tests showed that the composite material could be tailored to successfully withstand the higher temperature, high-pressure supercritical carbon dioxide needed for generating electricity more efficiently than today's heat exchangers.

October 25, 2018 03:00pm ET: There's a Strange Cloud on Mars Right Now, and It's Just Hanging Around. The cloud is full of water ice, the agency continued, created by air flow along the side of the volcano. This means the feature is what scientists call an orographic or lee cloud. That also happens to mean that the cloud changes over the course of the day as atmospheric patterns on Mars change. Mars Express captured this image of the strange cloud in visual and infrared light on Sept. 17, 2018. Scientists watching the cloud have noticed that it grows over the course of the morning, stretching along the equator. It may also be affected by the dust still in the atmosphere from the massive dust storm that engulfed Mars earlier this year.

27 October, 2018 14:25 IST: Astronomers find signs for black holes merging over time forming larger black holes. Astronomers have found evidence for a large number of double supermassive black holes, the likely precursors of gigantic black hole merging events. This confirms the current understanding of cosmological evolution that galaxies and their associated black holes merge over time, forming bigger and bigger galaxies and black holes. A jet that always heads in the same direction only heats a limited amount of gas in its vicinity. However, jets from binary black holes change direction continuously. Therefore, they can heat much more gas, suppressing the formation of stars much more efficiently, and thus contributing towards keeping the number of stars in galaxies within the observed limits.

Ancient caves depicting 7000-year-old civilization and culture discovered in India. A group of caves containing ancient rock art has been discovered by a researcher in Akkampalli, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India.  The discovery has been described as archaeologically significant, as they shed light on civilization and culture as early as 7,000 years ago. Two other famous prehistoric rock art sites can be found within Andhra Pradesh, including Ketavaram, a site containing 100 human and animal figures drawn on basalt rocks, belonging to a period ranging from 6,000 BC to 200 AD; and Chintakunta, the second largest rock art site in India, which contains 200 paintings  in ten shelters bearing red and white paintings of deer, bulls, elephants, foxes, rabbits, hyenas, reptiles, birds, geometric designs and human figures. The site in Akkampalli is thought to be contemporary to the existing rock sites at Ketavaram and Chintakunta. Rock painting and rock shelters belonging to Stone Age came to light in Chintakunta village in the caves near Survey number 425.  These are believed to be the proofs of the existence of an ancient man who lived before 25,000 years. The total number of pictures in these caves is nearly 200.  Local people call this as Eddula Aavula Gundu.  These are believed to belong to the middle Stone Age. But the rock painting at Chintakunta village is the biggest in South India. An archeologist from Australia has mentioned in his book ‘Line on Stone, the Prehistoric Rock Art of India’ about Chintakunta caves. The site was explored and analyzed by Dr. Erwin Neumayer of Austria. Dr. Erwin Neumayer has mentioned about Chintakunta caves in his book Line on Stone, the Prehistoric Rock Art of India.

October 29, 2018, 14:01 +08: Scientists have been debating over the existence of two puzzling celestial bodies which they call Kordylewski dust clouds for nearly 57 years. It was in 1961 that Polish astronomer Kazimierz Kordylewski initially discovered these dust clouds, and he suggested that they may be orbiting the earth around the L4 and L5 Lagrange points. Now, a team of Hungarian scientists has confirmed the existence of these celestial bodies, Kordylewski dust clouds might be orbiting around 4,00,000 km away from the earth. However, there are many experts who believe that these dust clouds might be a transient phenomenon. As per these experts the dust they noticed by the Hungarian researchers could be easily blown away through gravitational jostling from other planets or solar wind.

                                                   Fig.10 Jackfruit seeds

Jackfruit seed may soon be a substitute to cocoa.  According to study, cappuccino made with jackfruit seed flour has choco-aroma, which suggests seeds can be used as an alternative to cocoa. Roasted jackfruit seeds can replace between 50 and 75 percent of the cocoa that is blended with milk and coffee to make cappuccino without impairing flavor or aroma. A student baked a loaf of bread made from jackfruit seed flour, and it smelled strongly of chocolate. After the accidental discovery, several studies were performed at ESALQ-USP, and an article was published in PLOS ONE demonstrating the feasibility of using flour made from roasted dry or fermented seeds of hard jackfruit to obtain an aroma similar to that of chocolate in cappuccino. Spada recalled that the discovery was accidental.

October 30, 2018, 6:05 pm: Meet the Self-Taught Punekar Who Grows Veggies in PET Bottles! “How many of us know where our food comes from? At a time where everything we pick from the grocery store is laden with pesticides, growing our own food can help cut down health risks and also ensure our children get their food in its freshest form.”  Growing up, most of us were taught that plants need soil to grow. Hydroponics turns this concept on its head by helping a farmer grow fruits, vegetables and flowering plants that traditionally grow in soil, by helping them grow in water. Before you confuse them with aquatic plants, let us tell you that they aren’t completely submerged in water. Only the roots of these plants are exposed to the mineral solution which has a balance of micronutrients (Nitrogen, Potassium, Phosphorus) and macronutrients (boron, calcium, magnesium etc.). Further, the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and Ph balance are checked before growing plants in it. At times, when the plant needs stability, the roots are supported with the use of cocopeat.
