18-Jan-2019: University of Cologne: Classic double-slit experiment in a new light. the researchers in Cologne investigated an iridium oxide crystal (Ba3CeIr2O9) by means of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). The crystal is irradiated with strongly collimated, high-energy X-ray photons. The X-rays are scattered by the iridium atoms in the crystal, which take over the role of the slits in Young's classical experiment. Due to the rapid technical development of RIXS and a skillful choice of crystal structure, the physicists were now able to observe the scattering on two adjacent iridium atoms, a so-called dimer. 'The interference pattern tells us a lot about the scattering object, the dimer double slit.
January 18, 2019, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Enhanced NMR reveals chemical structures in a fraction of the time. The new approach, which relies on short pulses of microwave power, could allow researchers to determine structures for many complex proteins that have been difficult to study until now. "This technique should open extensive new areas of chemical, biological, materials, and medical science which are presently inaccessible.

18 Jan. 2019: Dr. Claudius Gros of Goethe University’s Institute for Theoretical Physics recently published a paper that looks at planetary protection and makes the case for “Genesis-type” missions. The paper, titled “Why planetary and exoplanetary protection differ: The case of long duration Genesis missions to habitable but sterile M-dwarf oxygen planets“, recently appeared online and is due for publication by the journal Acta Astronautica. As the founder of Project Genesis, Gros addresses the ethical issue of seeding extrasolar planets and argues how and why planetary protection may not apply in these cases.
19-Jan-2019: New class of solar cells, using lead-free perovskite materials. Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology(UNIST). With its promising electronic properties, the new perovskite material has been demonstrated to function as a charge regenerator with dye? Sensitized solar cells, thus enhancing both the overall efficiency and stability. Their analysis demonstrated that the surface state of Cs2SnI6 is highly redox active and can be effectively charged/discharged in the presence of iodide redox mediators. Besides, the preparation of a charge regenerator system based on Cs2SnI6 confirmed that charge transfer occurred through the surface state of Cs2SnI6. "In case of Cs2SnI6, charge transfer occurred through the surface state of Cs2SnI6," says HyeonOh Shin in the Combined MS./Ph.D in Chemistry at UNIST. "This will aid in the design of future electronic and energy devices, using Pb-free perovskites." Based on this strategy, the research team engineered hybrid solar cells, using a Cs2SnI6?based charge regenerator for organic dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Such solar cells generate electric current in the process where the oxidized organic dye returns to its original state.

21 Jan 2019: 1 hour ago: at 11:19AM: India is set to overtake the UK in 2019 in the rankings of the world’s largest economies. The India economy may witness a growth of 7.6% in 2019 whereas the UK economy will only see a growth of 1.6% if it deals with the no-deal Brexit, according to a prediction by PwC. India is going to move from the seventh position to the fifth position while the UK is going to slip in the list of global economic leaders, expected PwC. India is the fastest growing large economy in the world, with an enormous population, favorable demographics and high catch-up potential due to low initial GDP per head. It is therefore all but certain to continue to rise in the global GDP league table in the coming decades.

A Lost, Ancient Civilisation? Archaeologists Uncover Mysterious Ruins in Odisha. From the findings of the excavation, it can be concluded that the habitation was an urban settlement belonging to the Mauryan to Kushan period, which was about 2300 years back. The imperial coins with punch marks were issued during the Mauryan and Magadhan period. These remains, archaeologists say, may point towards an advanced civilization dating from the Mauryan and Kushan period, about 2300 years ago. Among the artifacts unearthed were pieces of jewelry like earrings and toe rings made of silver and copper, beads made of agate, beryl, carnelian, coral, garnet and Jasper, and colored glass bangles. Additionally, wheel-like iron equipment, arrowheads, pestles, and sling balls were also found.

January 23 at 8:20 PM: CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Astronomers managed to capture the moment of an impact during this week’s eclipsed moon. Spanish astrophysicist Jose Maria Madiedo of the University of Huelva said Wednesday it appears a rock from a comet slammed into the moon during the total lunar eclipse late Sunday and early Monday. The strike was seen by telescopes in Spain and elsewhere as a bright flash. Madiedo said it’s the first impact flash ever seen during a lunar eclipse, although such crater-forming impacts are common. The object hit at an estimated 10 miles (17 km) per second, and was 22 pounds (10 kg) and 12 inches (30 cm) across, according to Madiedo. Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles also recorded the impact during its live stream of the eclipse. A second flash was seen a minute after the first by some observers, said Anthony Cook, an astronomical observer at Griffith.

24 January 2019, 07:54 PM: Are California, Oklahoma and Alaska earthquakes and Blood Moon connected? Few people are connecting these events with Blood Moon and claiming that these earthquakes have occurred due to this astronomical event. The year’s first lunar eclipse which occurred on January 21 and on the same day the Super Blood Wold Moon also appeared in the night sky. Ahead of this Blood Moon, many people anticipated serious mayhem on the occurrence of the event. Consequently, on January 21, six earthquakes occurred in the US, where on earthquake was measured at a magnitude of 4.7. Four out of six earthquakes have hit Alaska, one hit Oklahoma and the remaining one in California. Now, few people are connecting these events with Blood Moon and claiming that these earthquakes have occurred due to this astronomical event. The super blood wolf moon is a lunar eclipse that will last 62 minutes in totality. The term ‘Super Wolf Blood Moon’ refers to Total Lunar Eclipse during which the takes on a reddish glow from refracted light as the heavenly bodies move into position - hence the name "blood moon". The more particulate or pollution in the atmosphere, the redder the moon appears. It can also appear black, grey, or brown. According to NASA, the color depends on the amount of dust and clouds in the atmosphere. A wolf moon is a term given to the January full moon each year. The name was traditionally used by Native Americans, according to the Independent.

Spectroscopy is a powerful tool for astronomers, yielding a wealth of information by measuring how much light an object emits at different wavelengths. In the past, astronomers typically acquired just one spectrum for each galaxy, but resolved spectroscopy (also called integral field spectroscopy) obtains hundreds of separate spectra covering every location within the galaxy.
