Meteor EXPLODES, shatters windows in western Cuba, after the startling Florida Keys. A meteor has rocked the skies of western Cuba, exploding mid-air, shattering windows and raining charred meteorite rocks on people’s homes. Before its spectacular demise, the space rock was seen flying above Florida. The meteor exploded near the town of Viñales, in the Pinar del Río province, Friday, with witnesses reporting hearing two loud blasts as it disintegrated. The body left a huge trail of smoke in the sky and showered the ground with small rocks. With fragments falling on Pinar del Rio, people in western Cuba said they saw a flare pass through the afternoon sky before black stones fell on the tourist town of Vinales and other parts of the western province. At the same time, people in the city of Matanzas, east of the capital, Havana, saw a sphere about a meter in diameter fall into the sea. Residents in Viñales, Cuba, heard a “large explosion” around this time on Friday afternoon. The explosion has now been confirmed to be from a fireball that produced a meteorite fall. Several meteorites have been found in western Cuba after a huge meteor was seen by many, in broad daylight, on Friday, February 1, 2019. People in southern Florida also saw the meteor, as this space rock traveled over West Palm Beach, above the Florida Keys, and then to Viñales, a town in Pinar del Río, Cuba. The event occurred at around 1:16 – 1:17 p.m. EST on Friday, February 1, 2019. Residents of Viñales, Cuba saw a very long smoke trail that lasted more than one minute, while the meteor itself was described as extremely bright, with amyellow-orange color, and lasted more than at least four seconds. Several Cuban residents reported finding black rocks showing the characteristic fusion crust seen in ordinary chondrite meteorites.

Fig.1 Measuring Gravity on Mars
As Curiosity ascends Mount Sharp, getting farther from the center of Mars, the gravitational pull of the planet gets very slightly weaker. Measurements using the rover's accelerometers (gray) show, however, that the gravity is not falling off as fast as expected from its change in elevation. The difference between the predicted (dashed black line) and modeled (solid black line) results from the additional downward pull of the mass of Mount Sharp itself, allowing the researchers to estimate the density of the rocks beneath the rover.

Konarka’s technique uses the solar cell material as ink and a thin flexible plastic as paper. According to the company, the process creates solar cells which are almost as good as the clunky silicon ones, created with much more advanced technologies. However, these inkjet babies are much much cheaper. Wroclaw, Poland: What if one day all buildings could be equipped with windows and facades that satisfy the structure’s every energy need, whether rain or shine? That sustainability dream is today one step closer to becoming a reality thanks to Polish physicist and businesswoman Olga Malinkiewicz. Indeed, perovskite technology is on track to revolutionize access to solar power for all, given its surprising physical properties.

This was a small step towards the first successful experiment in the development of photonic technologies using green materials. At present, nobody uses a biological material to produce lasers. This doesn’t replace existing technology, but here is the possibility of generating biocompatible lasers using carrots. For the experiment, the researchers came up with a simple

Fig.6 Himalayan glacier melts down 6 Feb. 2019.
Himalayan meltdown: Number of glaciers in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region is rising. Rapid warming of the region leads to not only melting of glaciers but also fragmentation, says the area’s first-ever assessment. In the northern slopes of the Himalayas, glaciers are clearly receding. Glacier area change ranges between −0.1 percent/year for the Chandra-Bhaga basin (northwestern Indian Himalayan region) between 1980 and 2010 to more than −1 percent/year for the Poiqu basin (on the northern slopes of central Himalaya) between 1986 and 2001. Smaller glaciers are shrinking faster than larger ones, although the smaller glaciers of Ladakh show a lower rate of a retreat than other Himalayan glaciers. However, the assessment makes clear that despite the surety of glaciers in the Hindu Kush mountains losing length since 1973, no studies have been done to examine area change in this region.

13 Feb. 2019: Insects are dying off - we're in the middle of a 6th mass extinction. Bee species in the UK, Denmark, and North America have taken major hits - bumblebees, honey bees, and wild bee species are all declining. Moths and butterflies are also disappearing across Europe and the US. Between 2000 and 2009 alone, the UK lost 58% of butterfly species on farmed land. Dragonflies, mayflies, and beetles appear to be dying off as well. Substantial declines in insect populations, therefore, threaten the food, timber, and fiber production that humanity's survival depends. Climate-change-driven temperature shifts are playing a role in insect deaths, too, though it's not the main factor.
