Jan 01, 2021, 7:32am CST: Researchers develop new chemistry for the zinc-air battery. Researchers say that the resulting full zinc-air battery can operate stably for 320 cycles and 1600 hrs in an ambient air atmosphere. Researchers are clear that while the ZAB is a potential alternative battery technology with advantages compared to current lithium-ion batteries, the technology requires more research and optimization. Using a Zn-salt with a hydrophobic anion trifluoromethanesulfonate, the team was able to remove water from the air cathode surface, allowing a highly reversible 2e ORR reaction on the air cathode in a diluted, aqueous electrolyte.

There are concerns it harms the marine environment and larger species such as cod, haddock and whiting by causing their spines to break. Using an electric current to fish was banned by the EU in 1998 but since 2006 exemptions were allowed for some pulse trawling.

Jan. 03, 2020: Astronomers running the world’s largest initiative to look for alien life have recently picked up an “intriguing” radio wave emission from the direction of Proxima Centauri, the closest star to our Sun, The Guardian reported. There are also reasons to believe that the signal might not mean ‘aliens’. Since only the Parkes observatory has picked up the signal, which has not appeared since, it would be impossible to verify that it came from Proxima Centauri. Another possibility could be that the signal could have been caused by something behind Proxima Centauri, or by a natural phenomenon whose existence we so far do not know of.

Jan. 05, 2020: Five asteroids are set to make a close approach to Earth tomorrow, on January 6. Two of the asteroids — 2016 CO247 and 2008 AF4 — are bigger than the Eiffel Tower. Even the smallest of the five asteroids, 2021 AJ, is travelling fast enough to release as much energy as the Hiroshima bomb blast if it were to crash into the planet. It’s a new year, but the life-ending threats facing the planet are still the same. Five asteroids are set to make a close approach to Earth on January 6, according to the Central for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS). Three of the asteroids are relatively small and pose a smaller threat to the planet if they were headed straight for it. However, the other two are bigger than the Eiffel Tower. The bigger of the two, 2008 AF4, is nearly half a kilometre wide. If it were to crash into the planet, the resulting impact would be the equivalent of 25 megatons to 50 megatons, the same as the largest nuclear bombs in existence today.

Jan. 06, 2021: Are primordial black holes really giant gravitinos? Astronomers don't understand the origins of the biggest black holes in the universe. These black holes appear so early in the cosmological record that we might have to invoke new physics to explain their appearance. New research proposes an intriguing origin story: the first black holes didn't come from stars but from clumps of super-exotic, super-hypothetical particles known as gravitinos that managed to survive the first chaotic years of the Big Bang. New research proposes an intriguing origin story: the first black holes didn't come from stars but from clumps of super-exotic, super-hypothetical particles known as gravitinos that managed to survive the first chaotic years of the Big Bang. Enter the gravitino, or at least one version of that hypothetical particle. And in one version, there's a particle known as the gravitino. The gravitino is the supersymmetry partner particle of the graviton, which itself is the hypothetical particle that carries the force of gravity. The existence of the gravitino is highly speculative and not based on any existing evidence. But, as we will soon see, some models of the gravitino imbue them with some very special properties that make them ripe for seeding the formation of black holes. According to a research article recently published to the preprint journal arXiv, the high-energy early universe could have had just the right conditions to populate the universe with gravitinos. Because of their unique properties (most notably, their ability to quickly gravitationally attract each other), they could quickly form microscopic black holes.

The research has found when these blue-light detecting cryptochromes are exposed to a photon, they trigger a physiological response.Researchers studied Arabidopsis thaliana which is considered to be a model plant. It has a small genome, grows quickly and produces many seeds which make it an ideal plant for research purposes. Using the Advanced Light Source X-ray, they were able to understand the structure of the cryptochrome-2. The X-ray  facility was available at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. When the protein is exposed to blue light, certain elements within the protein undergo changes. The rearrangement process is called photo-induced oligomerization. They observed that when subjected to the blue light, the light-detecting part of the molecule becomes a tetramer, a structure made of four units. Before this part detects light, it is a single unit

Project costed Rs.18 lakh primarily financed by the German firm. They can grow at least two crops per year by crop rotation. A check dam was constructed across the flow on a sheet rock to a 31-acre cluster. Round the year farmers can get water.
Jan. 13, 2021: The galaxy officially called “A2261-BCG” seems to have lost its black hole. Scientists now believe that the black hole might be floating through space, marking the first such instance ever recorded. The first ever “recoiling” black hole may now be floating through the universe. Scientists posit that this implies that a powerful force emanating from somewhere in the galaxy may be behind the ejection of this supermassive black hole. The power of the force would have been strong enough to push the black hole far away!
Jan. 13, 2021: A 30-year-old unnamed man with bipolar disorder injected himself with "magic" mushrooms, which contain the psychedelic drug psilocybin, in a failed attempt at a trip. Psychedelic mushrooms are meant to be eaten or drank, not injected. The mushrooms grew in the man's bloodstream and caused his body to go into organ failure. He's still being treated to this day with antifungals and antibiotics.

Jan. 13, 2021: The source of a huge flare that swept through our solar system has been pinpointed by scientists. The discovery could help the understanding of gamma-ray bursts, the most powerful explosions in the universe. Earth is hit by mild and short gamma-ray bursts regularly, on most days. But more rarely there are vast explosions, like the newly examined GRB 200415A, which bring with them a lashing of energy more powerful than our own Sun.
Jan. 14, 2021: The recent IIT study, now published in the journal Physical Review Letters (PRL), highlights the importance of all three species of the neutrinos from the supernovae. In contrast, all the other models take only two of these neutrinos in account. The paper focuses on supernovae, a super explosion marking the death of a massive star that sends shockwaves to massive distances. Supernovae release particles that eventually make up most of the matter around the universe. The study of supernovae and the role of neutrinos can thus help us understand much about the universe. "These 'fast' conversions are nonlinear in nature and are not confronted in any other neutrino sources but supernovae. We for the first time did a non-linear simulation of fast conversion with 'all' the three neutrino flavors in supernovae."
Jan. 14, 2021: On July 19, 2020, it was 1.4602 milliseconds shorter than the full 24 hours, according to a report in The Telegraph. It is not an alarming thing as such as the planet's rotation varies due to ocean currents, atmospheric pressure, and movement of the core. Now, It takes about 86,400 secs to rotate around its axis.
Jan.  15, 2021: 7 hours ago: 112 medicinal plants in Himalayas 'threatened', but conservation plans in place for just 5. In the Indian Himalayan region, one of 36 global biodiversity hotspots, 1,748 medicinal plant species have been identified. But with increased commercial collection, unmonitored trade, habitat loss and unsustainable harvesting, 112 plant species are now threatened, the first extensive study across Indian Himalayan states has found. And of these, conservation plans are in place for just five. "There is very little data about the population status of medicinal plants. The extraction of high-value medicinal plants has not always been managed well. Besides, local and indigenous communities depend on the ecosystem for medicines, fuel and fodder.”

Jan. 15, 2021: 3 hrs ago: Scientists from Stanford University in the United States have developed a quantum version of Archimedes' screw and have published their findings in this month’s Science Journal. The paper titled "Topological pumping of a 1D dipolar gas into strongly correlated prethermal states" describes how the quantum version of Archimedes’ screw hauls fragile collections of gas atoms to higher and higher energy states without collapsing. An Archimedes’ screw or an Egyptian screw is a machine that is used for transferring water from a low-lying water-body into irrigation ditches. The abstract of the paper mentions that the scientists created a non-thermal state in a Bosonic one-dimensional (1D) quantum gas of dysprosium by stabilizing a super-Tonks-Girardeau gas against collapse and thermalization with repulsive long-range dipolar interactions. Benjamin said that when the research was in its initial stages, his expectation for the system was that the stability of the gas would only shift a little. However, as their experiments made progress, they found a dramatic, complete stabilization of the gases which, Benjamin says, was beyond his wildest conception.
