Mar. 21, 2022: Satellite magnetic data reveal interannually waves in Earth’s core. https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2115258119. Abstract. The Earth’s magnetic field displays variations on a broad range of time scales, from years to hundreds of millions of years. The last two decades of global and continuous satellite geomagnetic field monitoring have considerably enriched the knowledge on the rapid physical processes taking place in the Earth’s outer core. Identification of axisymmetric torsional Alfvén waves with sub decadal periods from observatory and satellite data has given access to an averaged intensity of the magnetic field in the Earth’s core interior. A significant part of the rapid signal, however, resides in nonaxisymmetric motions. Their origin has remained elusive, as previous studies of magnetohydrodynamic waves in the Earth’s core mainly focused on their possible signature on centennial time scales. Here, we identify nonaxisymmetric wavelike patterns in the equatorial region of the core surface from the observed geomagnetic variations. These wavelike features have large spatial scales, interannually periods in the vicinity of 7 y, amplitudes reaching 3 km/y, and coherent westward drift at phase speeds of about 1,500 km/y. We interpret and model these flows as the signature of Magneto–Coriolis (MC) eigenmodes. Their identification offers a way to probe the cylindrical radial component of the magnetic field inside Earth’s core. It follows from our work that there is no need for a stratified layer at the top of the core to account for the rapid geomagnetic field changes.

Mar. 25, 2022: New vertical Sun waves detected with unexplained speed. Tech Desk  2 hours ago.  Researchers from New York University, Abu Dhabi and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research have discovered a set of new vorticity (spinning) waves coming from the Sun that move much faster than can be predicted with existing theories. The high-frequency retrograde (HFR) waves detected after 25 analyzing 25 years of space and ground-based data moves in the opposite direction of the Sun’s rotation and appears as a pattern of vortices (fluid-like revolving motions) on the surface of the Sun and move at three times the speed predicted by current theory. But curiously enough, the behavior of these waves is very similar to a type of wave found in Earth’s oceans known as Rossby Waves, which also travel much quicker than researchers can explain.
Mar. 25, 2022: New Image Shows Mysterious 'Odd Radio Circles' That Are Bigger Than Milky Way. Bharat Sharma  6 hours ago. Now, elusive and "odd radio circles" were captured on image. Odd Radio Circles, or ORCs were first discovered in 2020 and have continued to confuse scientists since then. Two years ago, the first ORCs were spotted using the Australian SKA Pathfinder Telescope. These circles are extremely massive - spread over a million light-years. That's 16 times bigger than the size of our home galaxy, the Milky Way. According to astronomers, it takes these circles 1 billion years to grow to their maximum size. They become so large that many ORCs have expanded past many galaxies.

Mar. 26, 2022:  New Type Of Ultraviolet Light Kills Germs Indoors With No Harmful Effects On Humans. Bharat Sharma  2 hours ago. The best part is perhaps that it took only 5 minutes for the light to reduce the level of microbes indoors. What does this mean? Simply put - such technology, if installed in the ceiling could effectively reduce the person-to-person transmission of airborne viruses like Covid-19. In essence, if all buildings in the world had these UV lights, common cold would become uncommon and a potentially new virus could be stopped before it wreaks havoc.

Mar. 28, 2022: Primordial Helium-3 Exchange Between Earth's Core and Mantle. Peter L. Olson, Zachary D. Sharp. Abstract. Volatiles from the solar nebula are known to be present in Earth's deep mantle. The core also may contain solar nebula-derived volatiles, but in unknown amounts. Here we use calculations of volatile  and degassing to estimate the abundance of primordial 3He now in the core and track the rate of 3He exchange between the core and mantle through Earth history. We apply an ingassing model that includes a silicate magma ocean and an iron-rich proto-core coupled to ingassing a nebular atmosphere of solar composition to calculate the amounts of 3He acquired by the mantle and core during accretion and core formation. Using experimentally determined partitioning between core-forming metals and silicate magma, we find that dissolution from the nebular atmosphere deposits one or more pentagrams of 3He into the proto-core. Following accretion, 3He exchange depends on the convective history of the coupled core-mantle system. We combine determinations of the present-day surface 3He flux with estimates of the present-day mantle 3He abundance, mantle and core heat fluxes, and our ingassed 3He abundances in a convective degassing model. According to this model, the mantle 3He abundance is evolving toward a statistical steady state, in which surface losses are compensated by enrichments from the core.
