Jun. 30, 2022: 7:54PM: How quantum batteries could lead to EVs that go a million miles between charges. Gas prices got you down? We’re more interested in the cutting-edge quantum physics version of a million-mile battery: one that can last a million miles between charges. More importantly, however, quantum battery technology could be what saves us from the human-wrought global climate crisis and our dependency on harmful fuel sources.

July. 1, 2022: Bihar’s Home Gardener Uses PVC Pipes To Harvest 5 KG of Organic Veggies Every Week. Vertical gardening is often considered to be an expensive method of farming. But Sunita Prasad, a homemaker from Bihar, is proving this theory wrong. She used two 5-foot PVC pipes and bamboo to harvest up to 5 kg of vegetables and fruits every week. It cost her less than Rs 1,000 to set up her garden, and just Rs 60 to install the bamboo pipes. She employed vermicomposting to make sure that the produce is organically grown. She grows brinjal, okra, cabbage, strawberry, and many other seasonal vegetables. “One day while selling goods to a scrap dealer, I took note of a pipe on his bicycle and bought it instantly, in the hopes of creating something innovative out of it. But eventually, it was left laid on the roof with some soil. Many weeks later, I noticed leaves sprouting from it.” This was how Sunita decided to start a vertical garden.

July. 1, 2022: The team uses a wafer-thin piece of silicon and nitrogen to transform the signal that is coming out of a superconducting qubit into visible light, the similar kind that already carries digital signals from different locations through fiberoptic cables. The features of quantum internet might sound very similar to the classic internet, but advancements in the qubits technology are opening up major opportunities in more niche applications of the quantum internet. This newly developed network aims to link up dozens or even thousands of quantum chips, enabling engineers to solve problems that might be beyond the understanding of modern supercomputers.

The study combined extensive satellite data with ground-level observations to show that the eruption was unique in observed science in both its magnitude and speed, and in the range of the fast-moving gravity and atmospheric waves it created. The eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai submarine volcano on January 15, was one of the most explosive volcanic events of the modern era, creating waves that reverberated around the earth and reached 100 km into the ionosphere, a new study has revealed.

July. 1, 2022: Four things physicists still wonder about the Higgs boson. That’s why some scientists have proposed a future “Higgs factory,” which they could tune specifically to produce many Higgs bosons. Instead of colliding protons, a Higgs factory would collide matter and antimatter pairs, such as electrons and positrons. These particles would annihilate one another, eliminating much of the messiness of the collisions observed at the LHC and allowing scientists to take a closer look at the Higgs bosons produced. Such an instrument should enable scientists to reach 1% accuracy for precision measurements of most couplings and probe theoretical predictions for Higgs self-coupling. “By measuring the Higgs very precisely, we can gain an understanding of physics beyond the Standard Model and maybe find a portal to a new sector that is beyond the Standard Model.”

When a star gets too close to a black hole, sparks fly. And, potentially, so do subatomic particles called neutrinos. A dramatic light show results when a supermassive black hole rips apart a wayward star. Now, for the second time, a high-energy neutrino has been spotted that may have come from one of these “tidal disruption events,”

Plasmonics refers to the generation, detection, and manipulation of signals at optical frequencies along metal-dialectric interfaces at the nanometer scale. The four chapters of this book analyze Plasmonics and its applications. Chapter One discusses the plasmonic sensor and its use in the detection of brain enzymes. Chapter Two examines the optical constants of plasmonic nanostructures and demonstrates that optical absorption can be used to estimate dielectric constants of noble metal nanostructures. Chapter Three theoretically investigates the magnetoplasmonics of noble metal nanostructures and shows that plasmonic nanostructures have increased magnetic response in visible range at low magnetic fields. Lastly, Chapter Four studies some aspects of classical and quantum optical effects in surface Plasmonics.
July, 5, 2022: LHCb discovers three new exotic particles. The collaboration has observed a new kind of “pentaquark” and the first-ever pair of “tetraquarks”. (LHC) has observed three never-before-seen particles: a new kind of “pentaquark” and the first-ever pair of “tetraquarks”, which includes a new type of tetraquark. The findings, presented today at a CERN seminar, add three new exotic members to the growing list of new hadrons found at the LHC. They will help physicists better understand how quarks bind together into these composite particles. Most of the exotic hadrons discovered in the past two decades are tetraquarks or pentaquarks containing a charm quark and a charm antiquark, with the remaining two or three quarks being an up, down or strange quark or their antiquarks. But in the past two years, LHCb has discovered different kinds of exotic hadrons. Two years ago, the collaboration discovered a tetraquark made up of two charm quarks and two charm antiquarks, and two “open-charm” tetraquarks consisting of a charm antiquark, an up quark, a down quark and a strange antiquark. And last year it found the first-ever instance of a “double open-charm” tetraquark with two charm quarks and an up and a down antiquark. Open charm means that the particle contains a charm quark without an equivalent antiquark. The discoveries announced today by the LHCb collaboration include new kinds of exotic hadrons. The first kind, observed in an analysis of “decays” of negatively charged B mesons, is a pentaquark made up of a charm quark and a charm antiquark and an up, a down and a strange quark. It is the first pentaquark found to contain a strange quark. The finding has a whopping statistical significance of 15 standard deviations, far beyond the 5 standard deviations that are required to claim the observation of a particle in particle physics. Finding new kinds of tetraquarks and pentaquarks and measuring their properties will help theorists develop a unified model of exotic hadrons, the exact nature of which is largely unknown,” says LHCb spokesperson Chris Parkes. “It will also help to better understand conventional hadrons.”

July. 6, 2022: In 2016, Dr. Viazovska found the answer in eight dimensions, showing that a particularly symmetric packing structure known as E8 was the best possible, filling about one-quarter of the volume. Within a week, she and four other mathematicians showed that a different arrangement known as the Leech lattice was the best possible packing in 24 dimensions. In high dimensions, the filled volume is not very full, with the Leech lattice of 24-dimensional spheres occupying about 0.2 percent of the volume. What’s so special about eight and 24 dimensions? “I think that’s a mystery,” Dr. Viazovska said. “It’s just in these dimensions, certain things happen which don’t happen in other dimensions.”Viazovska however worked on the problem from 2003 to 2016 and found a “magic formula” that solved the problem in dimensions eight and 24, she said. Although we cannot visualise higher-dimensional spheres, mathematicians have a way of describing them. Viazovska answered the question for dimensions 8 and 24: in dimension 8 you can fill at most around 25% of space with hyperspheres, as higher dimensional spheres are called, and in dimension 24 it's only around 0.1% of space. Her proof stunned the mathematics community in its ingenuity and elegance. Esoteric as they may seem, higher-dimensional sphere packings have applications in communications technology, where they ensure that the messages we send via the internet, a satellite, or a telephone can be understood even if they have been scrambled in transit

July. 9, 2022: MADE IN INDIA: India famous for discoveries and machines, hand-powered orrery (a clockwork model of the solar system) that was used to predict celestial locations and eclipses decades in advance. It is widely considered to be the oldest example of an analog computer ever found in the world and is a very enigmatic artifact. However, its true significance was only identified in 1902 when the archaeologist Valerios Stais discovered that the device appeared to contain gears and surmised that it must be some kind of mechanical machine. The gadget was originally discovered as a single lump contained in the remains of a wooden box roughly 13.4 inches (34 cm) by 7.1 inches (18 cm) by 3.5 inches (9 cm) in dimension. During later conservation work, the larger lump was separated into three primary components which, in total, appear to contain roughly 82 individual fragments. These are thought to represent around a third of the complete original machine. Four of these fragments contain the remains of a number of corroded bronze gearwheels, while inscriptions are found on many others. The largest gear has 223 teeth and measures about 5.1 inches (13 centimeters) in diameter.  decipher the faintest writing that had once been inscribed on the machine's outer casing. This work showed that it contained 30 bronze meshing gears that allowed it to mimic the Moon's erratic orbit, where the Moon's velocity is higher in its perigee than in its apogee, as well as follow the motions of the Moon and Sun across the zodiac, and anticipate eclipses. Features on the Main Drive Wheel  indicate that the device also calculated planetary motions using a complex system of gears mounted on other gears. The instrument has been variously dated to between 150 and 100 BC or 205 BC . In any event, it had to have been built prior to the shipwreck, which has been dated to around 70–60 BC by numerous lines of evidence. Researchers suggested in 2022 that the machine's initial calibration date, rather than the actual date of manufacture, would have been December 23, 178 BC. Some scholars believe that the calibration date should be 204 BC, but, again, this is hotly debated. In any case, the machine is very old indeed. The mechanism was turned by a, sadly missing, small hand crank that was connected to the main gear via a crown gear. As a result, the date indicator on the front dial was shifted to the appropriate day of the calendar. If the mechanism were in good operating order, the crank would easily be able to hit a certain day on the dial because it moves the date marker around 78 days each full rotation. The mechanism's interlocked gears would all revolve as the hand crank was turned, allowing for the simultaneous determination of the Sun's and Moon's positions, the moon's phase, the timing of an eclipse, the calendar cycle, and maybe even the positions of planets. The face contained a large dial with pointers for showing the position of the Sun and the Moon and a half-silvered ball for displaying lunar phases.  The position of the spiral dial pointers on the two huge dials on the back had to be observed by the operator as well. As the dials included four and five complete rotations of the pointers, the pointer had a "follower" that followed the spiral incisions in the metal. A pointer's follower had to be manually shifted to the opposite end of the spiral whenever it reached the terminal month place at either end of the spiral before continuing.  The upper dial showed the synodic months (the time required for a body within the solar system to return to approximately the same position relative to the Sun as seen by an observer on Earth) in the Metonic cycle (a period of 19 years with 235 synodic months). This cycle was used in regulating calendars. A smaller, four-year dial, indicated the timing for different Panhellenic games, including the ancient Olympics. The lower dial has symbols to show months in which there was a likelihood of a solar or lunar eclipse. The device appears to have been pretty accurate, given its age. As we previously mentioned, the mechanism has hands or pointers for Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, which are all visible to the naked eye. It also has a rotating ball that shows the phases of the moon. The parts that made these planetary pointers work are gone, but researchers on the object say that the text on the front plate of the mechanism proves that the motion of the planets was modeled mathematically using a lot of complicated gears and that the model was very accurate - around 1 degree in 500 years to be precise.  And that is your lot for today's ancient-tech fans.  Since its discovery at the turn of the 20th century, the enigmatic Antikythera mechanism has perplexed and awed all who've seen or researched it. While we may never know exactly what it looked like, or precisely how it worked, it is clear that it was an impressive feat of engineering for its day.

Fig.15  Sanskrit stone inscription from Telangana.
Oldest Sanskrit stone inscription in South India is from Telangana's Phanigiri. A similar inscription was found at Chebrolu in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh last year, which was then believed to be the oldest one.In a new development, epigraphists have confirmed that stone inscription excavated in Phanigiri, an ancient Buddhist site in Tirumalagiri mandal of Suryapet district, is the oldest Sanskrit inscription written in Brahmi script found in southern India. A fragment of the inscription on a white marble stone was among the artifacts found during a series of excavations done at Phanigiri between 2003 and 2006. Recently, Dr K Munirathnam Reddy, Director (Epigraphy), Archaeological Survey of India, decoded the inscription and explained that Telangana now attains prominence as the State to have South India’s oldest Sanskrit inscription. A similar inscription was found at Chebrolu in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh last year, which was then believed to be the oldest one. That inscription was issued by the 28th Satavahana ruler Vijaya, who had ruled the empire in the 3rd century AD.  The fragment of stone discovered in Phanigiri where only three lines can be seen, records the reign of Sivasri Satakarni, the 25th ruler of the Satavahana dynasty, and also describes him as the son of Vasishthiputra Pulumavi II.Sanskrit emerged in Hala period Interestingly, though no Sanskrit inscription was found from the period before that in the south, there were inferences drawn by archaeologists from inscriptions of the time, that ‘Sanskritisation’ had happened during the rule of Hala, the 17th king of Satavahana dynasty in the 1st century AD.  Though the exact period of his rule is debatable, it has been established that Sivasri ruled before Vijaya. The Phanigiri inscription must have been issued decades before the Chebrolu inscription,” observes historian and epigraphist Dr Surya Kumar. Buzz Staff - Yesterday 3:11 pm. The date on the footage reveals that the incident took place on July 7, around 5:44 am. The video shows the meteor crossing the sky and illuminating the city of Santiago. The local media outlets cited the authorities saying that before disappearing into the Andes region, the burning meteor disintegrated into several parts.According to a report from Brazilian media outlet TNH1, the Santiago residents described the sound of the meteor crossing the atmosphere as a noise that is created by a burst of thunder. Moreover, Juan Carlos Beamin, who is an astronomer from the Chilean Astronomy Foundation, revealed that the meteor crossing Santiago is called “T12.cl.”. The astronomer went on to explain that a sky was illuminated while it was passing because upon entering the atmosphere even a “stone, or a small rock, due to friction with the air, burns and shines”. Juan further added, “We are talking about speeds of 10,000 kilometres per hour.” Meanwhile, it might be interesting to know that Chile’s meteor sighting came on the same day when New Zealand’s capital Wellington witnessed a burning meteor-like fireball flash across the sky. As per Reuters, witnesses heard a loud boom and saw an object like a flashlight passing above them.

July. 12, 2022: THE MINIMUM LIFETIME:
Fig.20 The Minimum Life Time.
In the figure above, the red dotted line indicates the minimum possible lifetime for a particle of a given mass.  If I told you there might be such a minimum, what would you guess it to be? The answer has to be consistent with dimensional analysis. Without relativity and quantum mechanics, there’s no such formula. But relativity gives me the cosmic speed limit (aka speed of light) c, and quantum physics gives me Planck’s constant ħ.  We saw in this post that ħ has dimensions of mass*length2/time, and so ħ/m has dimensions of length2/time. Dividing by c2 gives us something with dimensions of time. Consequently dimensional analysis suggests that a natural time scale for a particle of mass m is       T = # ħ/(mc2)   where # is an unknown number that we expect to be not too, too far from 1.  Electromagnetism is better described not by k, which has dimensions, but by a simple number α, which arises from the combination  α = k e2 / (ħ c) = 1/137.04… = 0.0073… This α appears in all electromagnetic processes — emission of light, the pull of a magnet, the decay of positronium — and if α were set to zero, all of these processes would cease.   I like to call this timescale a particle’s “heartbeat”; the more mass a particle has, the faster is its pulse (in contrast to mammals!)  A particle that has a lifetime shorter than its heartbeat really doesn’t ever come into existence in the first place.  That’s why, in Figure 1 the red dotted line for the minimum lifetime is set by this formula, with # taken to be 1.

July. 13, 2022: Nuclear moments of indium isotopes reveal abrupt change at magic number 82. A R Vernon et al., Nature volume 607, pages260–265 (2022): Abstract: In spite of the high-density and strongly correlated nature of the atomic nucleus, experimental and theoretical evidence suggests that around particular ‘magic’ numbers of nucleons, nuclear properties are governed by a single unpaired nucleon1,2. A microscopic understanding of the extent of this behaviour and its evolution in neutron-rich nuclei remains an open question in nuclear physics3,4,5. The indium isotopes are considered a textbook example of this phenomenon6, in which the constancy of their electromagnetic properties indicated that a single unpaired proton hole can provide the identity of a complex many-nucleon system6,7. Here we present precision laser spectroscopy measurements performed to investigate the validity of this simple single-particle picture. Observation of an abrupt change in the dipole moment at N = 82 indicates that, whereas the single-particle picture indeed dominates at neutron magic number N = 82 (refs. 2,8), it does not for previously studied isotopes. To investigate the microscopic origin of these observations, our work provides a combined effort with developments in two complementary nuclear many-body methods: ab initio valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group and density functional theory (DFT). We find that the inclusion of time-symmetry-breaking mean fields is essential for a correct description of nuclear magnetic properties, which were previously poorly constrained. These experimental and theoretical findings are key to understanding how seemingly simple single-particle phenomena naturally emerge from complex interactions among protons and neutrons.

July. 14, 2022: Sub-femtometer-resolution absolute spectroscopy with sweeping electro-optic combs. Bingxin Xu, Xinyu Fan, , Shuai Wang, Zuyuan He. State Key Laboratory of Advanced Optical Communication Systems and Networks, Department of Electronic Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai 200240, China. We have proposed a novel interleaving DCS technique with 0.16 fm (or 20 kHz) spectral resolution, which is three orders of magnitude narrower than existing demonstrations. Stabilized seed laser provides absolute optical frequency reference without additional calibration, and then external modulated to generate sweeping lightwave. Electrical driving signal with low nonlinearity error is fully utilized for ultra-high resolution and fast measurement. 20.125 million spectral points are recorded in 90 ms spanning 3.2 nm (or 400 GHz) bandwidth Theoretical performance limitation of interleaving DCS is analyzed and illustrated to reach the Nyquist-limitation. This significant superiority of DCS has not been considered in previous interleaving DCS. Spectral sampling rate, as a normalized factor to characterize overall performance, reaches 2.5×108 points/s to be half of Nyquist-limitation. Based on the theoretical trade-off between sweep time and spectral resolution, a fast measurement may be realized in 1.6 ms. The refresh rate of 625 Hz is fastest in interleaving DCS, which is also remarkable for all existing DCS considering the resolution of 1 MHz and bandwidth of 400 GHz. The reflectance spectrum of high Q-factor (over 108) fiber Fabry-Perot cavity demodulated in the proposed method is also measured by the ultra-fine EOFC to validate the performance. Flexible filter bandwidth adjustment in demodulation enables high SNR measurement of H13CN gas cell at the cost of resolution. The SNR reaches 30.6 dB after averaging in 50 ms with a spectral resolution of 50 MHz. This paper provides an effective method based on EOFCs for sub-fm-resolution absolute spectroscopy. Together with flexible fast refresh time and high SNR, the proposed method may be implemented in various applications including measuring high-Q cavity, electro-magnetically induced transparency, or physical and biochemical sensing requiring hyperfine spectrum measurement, and high sensitivity implementations such as green gas monitoring.

July. 14, 2022: Discovery of extragalactic neutrino factories. by University of Geneva. An international research team, led by the University of Würzburg and the University of Geneva (UNIGE), is shedding light on one aspect of this mystery: neutrinos are thought to be born in blazars, galactic nuclei fed by supermassive black holes. These results are published in the journal The Astrophysical Journal Letters. It was in 2017 that the researcher and collaborators first brought a blazar (TXS 0506+056) into the discussion as a putative neutrino source in the journal Science. This involves analyzing various signals ("messengers," e.g. neutrinos) from the universe. The main goal is to shed light into the origin of astrophysical neutrinos, possibly establishing blazars as the first source of extragalactic high-energy neutrinos with high certainty."What we need to do now is to understand what the main difference is between objects that emit neutrinos and those that do not.
