Fig.10 crystal fragments at Dorstone Hill in western England.
Hundreds of Shimmering Crystal Fragments Discovered at Prehistoric Burial Site. The rock crystals were likely brought to the site from a source more than 80 miles (130 km) away, over mountainous terrain, and the crystals appear to have been carefully broken into much smaller pieces, possibly during a community gathering to watch the working of what must have seemed like a magical material. Overton is the lead author of a study published in July in the Cambridge Archaeological Journal that describes the discovery of more than 300 of these quartz crystal fragments at a 6,000-year-old ceremonial site at Dorstone Hill in western England, about a mile (1.6km) south of the monument known as Arthur's Stone. Quartz crystal is also triboluminescent – that is, it gives off flashes of light when it's struck – and that peculiar property must have enhanced the process of breaking the crystals into smaller fragments. As well as being almost as transparent as water, several of the crystal fragments are prismatic, splitting white light into a visible rainbow spectrum.

Aug. 20, 2022: Piezomagnetic switching of the anomalous Hall effect in an antiferromagnet at room temperature. Authors: M. Ikhlas, S. Dasgupta, F. Theuss, T. Higo, Shunichiro Kittaka, B. J. Ramshaw, O. Tchernyshyov, C. W. Hicks & S. Nakatsuji : Nature Physics (2022): Abstract: Piezomagnetism couples strain linearly to magnetic order, implying that it can produce and control magnetization. However, unlike magnetostriction, which couples magnetization quadratically to strain, it enables bidirectional control of a net magnetic moment. If this effect becomes large at room temperature, it may be technologically relevant, similar to its electric analogue, piezoelectricity. However, current studies of the piezomagnetic effect have been primarily restricted to antiferromagnetic insulators at cryogenic temperatures. Here we report the observation of large piezomagnetism in the antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetal Mn3Sn at room temperature. This material is known for its nearly magnetization-free anomalous Hall effect. We find that a small uniaxial strain on the order of 0.1% can control both the sign and size of the anomalous Hall effect. Our experiment and theory show that the piezomagnetism can control the anomalous Hall effect, which will be useful for spintronics applications.

Aug. 22. 2022:Plasmas could be used to make the world's most powerful laser. Because plasma can shape very intense light without being damaged, it could be used to make components for lasers thousands of times more powerful than the strongest ones that exist. Using plasma to make lasers could make them more powerful and more compact. Matthew Edwards and Pierre Michel at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California proposed a laser design that includes components made from plasma, a state of matter similar to a hot “soup” of charged particles. They calculated that because plasma can reflect and focus very intense light without being damaged by it, this method could help build lasers thousands of times more powerful than the strongest ones.
Aug. 20, 2022: Mysterious Interstellar Plasma Revealed by Twinkling Pulsars. Occasionally pulsars—rapidly-spinning remnants of stars that flash like a lighthouse—show extreme variations in brightness. Astrophysicists predict that these short bursts of brightness occur because dense regions of interstellar plasma (the hot gas between stars) scatter the radio waves emitted by the pulsar. However, we still don’t know where the energy sources required to form and sustain these dense plasma regions come from. To better understand these interstellar formations, more detailed observations of their small-scale structure are required. A promising avenue for this is in the scintillation, or “twinkling,” of pulsars. When a pulsar’s radio waves are scattered by the interstellar plasma, the separate waves interfere and create an interference pattern on the Earth. As the Earth, pulsar, and plasma move relative to each other, this pattern is observed as brightness variations in time and in frequency: the dynamic spectrum. This is scintillation, or “twinkling.” The scattering and twinkling occurs in small regions of the plasma thanks to the point-like nature of pulsar signals. Following specialized signal processing of the dynamic spectrum, we can observe vivid parabolic features known as scintillation arcs that are related to the image of the pulsar’s scattered radiation on the sky. The measurements we obtained for the orbit of pulsar J1603-7202 are a significant improvement compared to previous analyses. This demonstrates the viability of scintillation in supplementing alternative methods. We measured the distance to the plasma and showed that it was about three-quarters of the distance to the pulsar, from Earth. This does not seem to coincide with the positions of any known stars or interstellar gas clouds. Pulsar scintillation studies often explore structures such as this, which are otherwise invisible. The question, therefore, remains open: what is the source of the plasma that scatters the pulsar’s radiation? Finally, using our orbit measurement, we are able to estimate the mass of J1603-7202’s orbital companion. It was calculated to be about half the mass of the Sun. When considered alongside the highly circular orbit of J160-7202, this implies the companion is likely a stellar remnant composed of carbon and oxygen — a rarer find around a pulsar than the more common helium-based remnants. Reference: “Orbital Dynamics and Extreme Scattering Event Properties from Long-term Scintillation Observations of PSR J1603−7202” by Kris Walker, Daniel J. Reardon, Eric Thrane and Rory Smith, 28 June 2022, The Astrophysical Journal. DOI: 10.3847/1538-4357/ac69c6. Aug. 27, 2022: Russia is burning $10 million a day of natural gas usually destined for Germany before Moscow choked off supply. George Glover - Yesterday 2:36 pm. The flares are at the Portovaya liquefied natural gas plant near the start of the pipeline, near the border with Finland, per the BBC. It's burning around 4.34 million cubic meters of gas each day, Rystad analysis showed. Moscow has sought to choke off Europe's gas supplies in apparent response to Western economic and energy sanctions brought in after its invasion of Ukraine. That's plunged the continent into an energy crisis and has sent benchmark gas prices soaring to record highs. Dutch TTF natural gas futures have risen 264% since June 13. Germany, which is Europe's largest economy, has felt the energy crunch in particular. Its electricity prices have skyrocketed over 600% in the year to July, and its factory costs are rising at their fastest rate since at least 1949 as industries struggle to find alternative fuels. But one diplomat told BBC News that Russia's burning of natural gas shows that western sanctions are "having a strong effect on the Russian economy".

As we near the peak of the 25th solar cycle of the Sun, which is due in 2023, the Sun is behaving more erratically. The increasing number of sunspots have been showing signs of peculiarity lately. Just a couple of days ago, we witnessed a sunspot which grew 10 times in size and became a part of a dual sunspot cluster. And today, a new sunspot has been observed which is displaying a very peculiar magnetic field. Instead of horizontal magnetic fields, this sunspot has them vertically, rotated at 90-degrees. This is an extremely strange phenomenon and has confused the scientists on what it means. And the bigger question is whether it can cause an unprecedented solar storm? The phenomenon was reported by SpaceWeather.com which stated, ?New sunspot AR3088 is emerging in the sun's southern hemisphere. Its magnetic field is not normal. Florida college freshman struck by lightning on her first day of classes. Ryan King - Yesterday 10:36 pm. The first day of college can be a daunting experience for some, but for Emma Eggler, it was shocking. Eggler, 18, was walking on campus on her first day of classes at the University of West Florida on Monday when she was swept off her feet and struck by lightning.“ I didn’t realize that I had been struck by lightning,” Eggler recalled to WKRG. “I was more embarrassed because I thought I tripped and fell on the ground. Then, I realized I couldn’t move, I couldn’t speak, I couldn’t do anything.” Students darted toward Eggler to tend to her injuries as they waited for first responders to arrive, her mother recalled in a Facebook post. One of the students, a boy, "gave her his shirt off his back" because hers was ripped in half, and another called 911, she added. Eggler lost feeling in her legs after the strike and suffered multiple burns, including on her arm and neck, which was affected by a necklace that "got some of the action," according to her mother. The powerful lightning bolt melted her shirt to her chest and moved through her body, exiting her left foot, leaving scorch marks and a hole in her sock and shoe, according to her mother." I was able to get my backpack off but I couldn't feel my legs at all and I was scared I was paralyzed and I was really panicking," Eggler recalled to WEAR-TV. Luckily, the bolt didn't permanently stop Eggler's heart, and now, she is feeling lucky to be alive. "Our baby is alive by the grace of God. I’m not kidding when I say it’s a miracle. The doctors have said she’s lucky to be alive," her mother wrote in a Facebook post. Since getting struck, Eggler has regained feeling and functionality in her legs and has been released from the hospital, hoping to head back to classes next week.

Close to the summit of an underwater mountain west of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a jagged landscape of towers rises from the gloom. Their creamy carbonate walls and columns appear ghostly blue in the light of a remotely operated vehicle sent to explore. A remotely operated vehicle shines a light on the spires of the Lost City. (D. Kelley/UW/URI-IAO/NOAA).[/caption] Discovered by scientists in 2000, more than 700 meters (2,300 feet) beneath the surface, the Lost City Hydrothermal Field is the longest-lived venting environment known in the ocean. Nothing else like it has ever been found. For at least 120,000 years and maybe longer, the upthrusting mantle in this part of the world has reacted with seawater to puff hydrogen, methane, and other dissolved gases out into the ocean. In the cracks and crevices of the field's vents, hydrocarbons feed novel microbial communities even without the presence of oxygen.
