After ending the class at 9 am, the students go to the school in the neighborhood every day for their regular studies. 57-year-old Dr Thottam Sivakaran Namboothiri, one of the two remaining authorities of the Kerala style chanting of Jaiminiya Samaveda, has taken up it as a mission to preserve its unique oral tradition by starting a 'Gurukulam' at a village in this central Kerala district. Launched in April this year, every day at 6 am, Namboothiri takes lessons of the traditional way of chanting of 'Jaiminiya Samaveda' for four young students belonging to Namboothiri-Brahmin families--teaching them the complex recitation techniques that are based on tonal accents, a unique manner of pronouncing each letter and specific speech combinations. After ending the class at 9 am, the students go to the school in the neighborhood every day for their regular studies. "It is a 12-year-long mission. Learning the Kerala-style chanting of thousands of hymns from the Jaiminiya Samaveda is very tough and boring as we have to ensure that the sound of each word remains unaltered," Namboothiri told PTI.  A distant relative of legendary Communist leader and former Kerala Chief Minister EMS Namboothiripad, Sivakaran Namboothiri said Jaiminiya Samaveda, featuring musical arrangements of 1,700 hymns from the Rig Veda and other sources, is on the verge of disappearance as currently there are two persons who have got complete knowledge about the unique tradition of chanting.

Venkayya was a fervent freedom fighter and the designer of the Indian national flag who went on to become synonymous with the spirit of free and independent India.  He was a farmer, a geologist, a lecturer at the Andhra National College in Machilipatnam, and fluent in Japanese. He became instantly famous as `Japan Venkayya`. In 1916, he published a booklet titled `A National Flag for India`. It not only surveyed the flags of other nations, but also offered 30-odd designs of what could develop into the Indian flag.

Aug.10, 2022:  TIRUNELVELI: An eight-month-long study conducted by an expert team from IIT Madras has revealed that the farm well at Ayankulam remained unfilled last December even when parts of Thisayanvilai taluk got flooded, as the well absorbed nearly 500-600 crore liters of water. In a statement, the district administration said the farm well is connected to limestone karst aquifers, which may have taken over 1,000 years to form. Assembly Speaker M Appavu and district Collector V Vishnu inspected the well on Monday.  “The team dug 22 new borewells to collect soil samples. They found limestone deposits and underground streams during their study, which was initiated upon the Collector’s request. According to the study, 14 other nearby wells in Keeraikaranthattu, Sathankulam, Suvisheshapuram and Idaichivillai were found to be naturally linked with limestone karst aquifers,” the statement read. The officials also noted that the Ayankulam farm well was more special than the other 14 wells, as it can be used to recharge the groundwater table in a 30-40sq km radius. “While water in dams and other resources are prone to evaporation, underground water can be used by farmers whenever needed. Rainwater can be channeled to surrounding farm wells via underground streams, which will eliminate the need for an irrigation water-distribution system in Thisayanvilai region. This could also solve water sharing disputes,” the statement added, mentioning that the district administration would extend the area of the groundwater table to over 200 sq km. IIT study finds 14 such wells in the region  The IIT Madras team found 14 other nearby wells in Keeraika-ranthattu, Sathankulam, Suvisheshapuram and Idaichivillai, which are naturally linked to limestone karst aquifers.
